To feel so bad I have lost my diamond earrings

Ygritte84 · 15/10/2021 13:54

I have driven myself insane since realising they are gone. They were my wedding earrings and were given to me by my late grandfather. I only wore them for special occasions or work events, and either kept them in the safe or temporarily in a jewellery pouch on top of a shelf. Last sighting of the earrings was on 23 July, my first date night with my husband after a long lockdown! I am starting to think that maybe, as we came back late at night, I might have put them on top of the bedroom cabinet and they got knocked off and lost.

I have searched everywhere, in every room. Even emptied the vacuum cleaner. It just doesn't make sense, for such a valuable item, to have been lost so carelessly. I am driving myself mad with speculation: what if they were stolen? The only two people in the house since July have been my mother-in-law and a teenage neighbour (both came to cat-sit while we were on holiday). Surely not, but what if? It's a horrible feeling.

The insurance paid up to my single item limit (not the full value, but still a good amount). It's not for the money though... feeling so guilty and stupid. After this experience, I invested in Stackers and am going to send my most valuable jewellery items for a professional valuation. Don't know if I will ever be able to enjoy wearing jewellery again!

@mountbattenbergcake
@LaurieFairyCake

It's a reference to Kim Kardashian, ugly crying because she lost a diamond earring in the sea.

(Ashamed that I know that)

Fingers crossed for you that they turn up OP!

Ygritte84 · 15/10/2021 14:37

@LaurieFairyCake Kim Kardashian had a total meltdown after losing one of her earrings in the ocean. I think she found it again though!

I have found something which was lost for 3 years! It was in a place I had looked for them when I did the big hunt.

Did you take an evening bag with you? Thats where mine were.

Redcrayons · 15/10/2021 14:43

Kim = Kim Kardashian

I dropped one of my grandmothers earrings in the house a few years ago. Combed every inch of the carpet, tipped the drawers out, emptied hoover bags etc. a couple of years later I opened the drawer and there it was. Not tangled with anything, I’ve no idea how I missed it.

If it’s in the house it will turn up.

Somethingsnappy · 15/10/2021 14:44

@yoyo1234

If you were going on holiday did you put them somewhere for "safe keeping". My DH hates it when I use that phrase (normal means gone for a long time/for good in our household).
I was also going to ask if you've been away at all? Could you have taken them with you and forgotten to put them back after being in a travel pouch or whatever?

Alternatively, in the bathroom?

BlueberrySugar · 15/10/2021 14:45

I'm guessing it's a reference to Kath and Kim the TV show but of course no one will actually say that.

No they won't because it's about Kim Kardashian..

So why not say Kim Kardashian then?
LaurieFairyCake · 15/10/2021 14:47

I've heard of Kim Kardashian

I did not ugly cry - I wept discreetly in the bog...

I was going to phone my insurance company but I thought they'd just put up my premiums massively

MrsMcCluskeysCat · 15/10/2021 14:49

@mountbattenbergcake because the iconic quote from the clip is 'Kim, people are dying!'

If you get the reference you do, but if you don't it's really no big deal.

godmum56 · 15/10/2021 14:51

I dropped my bunch of housekeys in the wilds of the New Forest and found them again 2 years later!

Except when people ignore people asking about it, which happens a lot on MN.

CheesyWeez · 15/10/2021 14:57

I took my earrings off after a night out because they had got snagged on my COVID face mask and I was afraid to lose them. I had put them safely in the drink holder of the car. They were still there weeks later as we didn't go anywhere much in the car because wfh and I didn't need earrings for going-out purposes either!

MrsMcCluskeysCat · 15/10/2021 14:59

@mountbattenbergcake maybe give people a chance to reply! Someone replied within 6 minutes of the question being asked...

Oblomov21 · 15/10/2021 15:01

You haven't lost-lost them. Just misplaced them, put them somewhere. In a coat pocket, a handbag section.

Hotpinkparade · 15/10/2021 15:04

I had a precious pair of earrings (not valuable, but they belonged to someone who had died and had great sentimental value). I mislaid them and was mortified for a good couple of years, searched my flat very thoroughly, eventually moved house and went round once the movers had gone, just checking round the edges of skirting boards etc but no luck.

A few months in to life in the new house, I found them tucked away in a little jewellery pouch, inside a bag otherwise used to store sex toys. Literally no memory of putting them there, no idea why I ever would, but clearly did. So: there is hope!

LadyPoison · 15/10/2021 15:07

I'm with the "they'll turn up" gang. I lost a very valuable gold bangle a few years ago and searched high and low for it. It was always on my wrist or in the safe so I had no idea how I lost it.

Almost a year later I found it. It was in/on a trinket pot on my dressing table but had exactly fitted itself into the grove which the lid sat.

gingerscot · 15/10/2021 15:07

This is why I wear my diamond earrings all the time. I figure they’re safer in my ears. And the amount they cost - I want to wear them everyday, not keep them “for good!”

TwoleftUggs · 15/10/2021 15:13

My wedding ring was my great grandmas wedding ring. I lost it once on a trip to the supermarket. Retraced all my steps, checked every freezer, aisle, under the trolleys, carpark, my driveway, the car, everywhere. Cried for ages. Someone told me about St Anthony, so I did that. Next time I got in the car, I spotted the ring hiding in the soft leather folds at the bottom of the gearstick!

WhatIsThisPlease · 15/10/2021 15:15

I feel your pain OP.

I lost my great grandmother's locket last year. Put it in an envelope to keep it safe and I think I must have thrown the envelope out. That was nearly a year ago and I'm still absolutely gutted about it.

About a month after that, I had a loft clear out and got rid of loads of stuff. My DP took a load of stuff to the tip and he accidentally took a box with my DC's first ever baby toys that sat in their cot with them. Am ashamed to say I cried buckets over both these things!

I really, really hope they turn up one day for you. Maybe you put them somewhere safe and just can't remember where? 🤞🏻

isthismylifenow · 15/10/2021 15:16

Can someone explain St Anthony to me please.

mountbattenbergcake · 15/10/2021 15:19

Patron saint of lost things. For some. Not me.
billy1966 · 15/10/2021 15:22

So annoying.

Them being together augurs well for them turning up.

Not religious at all but lived 35 years ago with a St Anthony devotee. Her grandmother apparently swore by him.

Long story short he did the biz a couple of times while I lived with her and I have prayed to him since...even for him to find me a parking spot, he has NEVER left me down🤷‍♀️.

So say a few prayers asking for his help and I will too.

You have probably put it in a SAFE place.🙄
Safe places are the worst for trying to remember.

🤞

CaptaNoctem · 15/10/2021 15:24

"St Anthony St Anthony turn around
Something's been lost that must be found"

There are many variations

ToastieSnowy · 15/10/2021 15:29

Check fluff filter of the washing machine. If you put them in a pocket and washed the item that could be where they are.

3luckystars · 15/10/2021 15:31

Re: st Anthony
I do it for the parking spots too and always get fantastic ones! You have to cough up the money though when you pass the church.
