To feel so bad I have lost my diamond earrings

Ygritte84 · 15/10/2021 13:54

I have driven myself insane since realising they are gone. They were my wedding earrings and were given to me by my late grandfather. I only wore them for special occasions or work events, and either kept them in the safe or temporarily in a jewellery pouch on top of a shelf. Last sighting of the earrings was on 23 July, my first date night with my husband after a long lockdown! I am starting to think that maybe, as we came back late at night, I might have put them on top of the bedroom cabinet and they got knocked off and lost.

I have searched everywhere, in every room. Even emptied the vacuum cleaner. It just doesn't make sense, for such a valuable item, to have been lost so carelessly. I am driving myself mad with speculation: what if they were stolen? The only two people in the house since July have been my mother-in-law and a teenage neighbour (both came to cat-sit while we were on holiday). Surely not, but what if? It's a horrible feeling.

The insurance paid up to my single item limit (not the full value, but still a good amount). It's not for the money though... feeling so guilty and stupid. After this experience, I invested in Stackers and am going to send my most valuable jewellery items for a professional valuation. Don't know if I will ever be able to enjoy wearing jewellery again!

I hope they turn up op.

DGM lost her eternity ring. She searched for it for months, moving things & checking drawers.

Some years later she put a cardigan on from the depths of her wardrobe, put her hand in the pocket & there it was!

DH lost his wedding ring his finger had swollen so he’d taken it off & put it on the mantle. We moved house & realised we hadn’t seen it. Several months later it turned up in the drawer of the bed.

EatSleepRantRepeat · 15/10/2021 15:37

So sorry, its gutting when these things happen! In case you've not looked there yet, I found a lost necklace DH had given me when we first met, in a tissue box! I get allergies so keep tissues on my night stand, I only realised it had fallen in when I went to put it in the recycling and heard it rattling around.

Fingers crossed for you they turn up Flowers especially losing both together, it's usually one at a time with mine when I brush my hair

JamMakingWannaBe · 15/10/2021 15:43

I too lost a diamond earring in the swimming pool or changing rooms.

I found a necklace I had lost for 8 years. Last wore it to a funeral and turned the house upside down looking for it. Not at all valuable but very sentimental. It turned up in the zip pocket in the side of my makeup bag (I'm sure I would have checked before?)

What else were you wearing the night you went out? Could they be in a clutch bag or coat pocket? 🍀🤞

SecondClassmyass · 15/10/2021 15:44

I am sometimes guilty of putting jewellery in pockets inside a handbag when I am rushing out of the door. I think to myself- I will put them on when I am in the car, and then forget about them for a while...
Many things have been found in handbag or coat pockets.

bettertimesarecomingnow · 15/10/2021 15:44

Tow a knot in a piece of string and pop it in your pocket. Then say out loud what's lost and that you need to find it
It will turn up. My passport did!

bettertimesarecomingnow · 15/10/2021 15:45

Tie a knot

LowlandLucky · 15/10/2021 15:46

Have you looked in the glove compartment of the car and the handbag you used that night ? Pray to St Anthony, always works for me.

Mandofan · 15/10/2021 15:48

That’s such a shame, I hope they turn up. When I put something somewhere for safekeeping I always write a note on my phone. That way I always know where I put something.

antsinyourpanta · 15/10/2021 15:51

I lost a diamond pendant when I was running once (yes it was a stupid idea to wear it runningBlush) I retraced my steps and found the chain but it had snapped and the pendant was nowhere to be seen.

EKGEMS · 15/10/2021 15:55

I've lost a diamond and pearl earring,a sapphire bracelet and a sentimental gold and diamond earring. Yeah this was over a nearly 30-year time frame. Anyhow I'm so sorry about your earrings.

muddyford · 15/10/2021 15:55

I lost my wedding ring and wear her everywhere. I found it, weeks later, between the pages of a closed book, which I must have been reading when I took the wretched thing off.

pushchairprincess · 15/10/2021 15:56

You've probably put them in a 'safe' place as they are so precious to you - I think you will find them when you are least expecting to :)

muddyford · 15/10/2021 15:56

...wear her...? Searched!

oakleaffy · 15/10/2021 15:57

I feel your pain OP
I had a beautiful Cannabis leaf made by The Great Frog when they were starting out, in silver.
It cost over a days wages.
It got lost and I think it either went down a floorboard or got hoovered up.
It was part of my youth
I’d love to find it again.
Id give money to charity if St Anthony can please guide me to find it.

SunshineCake1 · 15/10/2021 16:00

I lost a charm off my bracelet and was so stressed. I looked everywhere it could be. I ran out of places to check so I looked where there was no way it could be and opened a drawer. No chance it was there. It was. Try everywhere. I really hope you find them.

Wynturphelle · 15/10/2021 16:07

Good that the insurance paid out. My sister lost her diamond engagement ring but the insurance company claimed that as she'd lost it at home she effectively still had it in her house.

After St Anthony prayers it turned up in her laundry basket!

Zilla1 · 15/10/2021 16:08

HNRTT but have you checked the handbag, purse, coat or jacket you may have worn that evening?

SunshineCake1 · 15/10/2021 16:21

@Mandofan

That’s such a shame, I hope they turn up. When I put something somewhere for safekeeping I always write a note on my phone. That way I always know where I put something.
This is great. I'm going to start a notebook. The husband and kids laugh that I have a place for everything but when I don't I lose it. I put it there instead of here, even say to myself I won't remember it is there (instead of its usual place) and then wonder why I lose it. Sometimes I think I will remember as it's not it's usual place.
ProfessionalWeirdo · 15/10/2021 16:29

St Anthony of Padua is the patron saint of lost objects. He's never let me down yet.

3luckystars · 15/10/2021 16:32

I have a head like a sieve but I was given this tip last year and it is working great, if I put something somewhere, I say it out loud ‘I am putting these earrings in the hot press’ and it goes into my head then.
It actually really works. Too late for the OP but hopefully St. Anthony will sort her out!

babysnowman · 15/10/2021 16:52

Have you checked all the items of clothing you were wearing that night? I lost a ring once after a night out, searched high and low for it. Then a couple of months later I went to put on the shoes I was wearing that night and it was in one of them!! No recollection of how it got there but I obviously thought it was a good idea at the time!!

Thursa · 15/10/2021 17:15

I bet it turns up! I’m awful for the putting of things in a safe place. Right now I have a ring in a candle stick, another on the neck of a wee brass bell someone gave me, and a bracelet round the neck of a unicorn.

My mum lost her watch and was heartbroken over it. Months later she pulled a jersey out of a drawer and the watch was caught on the front of it.

Ygritte84 · 15/10/2021 18:03

I have searched extensively, every coat, bag, drawer, skirting board has been checked. And I did pray to St Anthony today :)

But in all honesty, I think the earrings must have been accidentally disposed of or hoovered up. Either my husband thought a pouch was empty and binned it (my n.1 theory), or the cat knocked them from the stand and they fell by the side of the bed, and then got hoovered up. I did check the hoover bag but didn't de-tangle every dust ball, perhaps they were in there.

Anyways, time to move on. But I want this experience to be formative, so I will move all my valuables to Stackers boxes, and get a professional valuation for the most important ones.

@DigOlBick

Kim, people are dying.
I came to say the exact same thing 😂
AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 15/10/2021 18:28

This is an absolutely outside chance, but if it is possible you put them down anywhere near the bathroom basin it might be worth checking the U-bend of that basin. I found a lost earring in a basin U-bend long after I had given up hope -- I only had the U-end off because water was being so slow to run out of the basin, and there was my lost earring in the middle of the hair and soap-slime.

The really annoying thing is that I had put the other earring somewhere safe, and now I can't find it! Gah!
