Extinction Rebellion co-founder says he would block an ambulance carrying a dying patient

How can anyone support this bunch of nasty idiots who are willing to commit what can only be described as murder. How can anyone justify this? Imagine how you would feel it was one of you family members in that ambulance, this man would not hesitate to cause their death.

This Guardian news report has a link to the 1 min video of members of the public doing what the police should have been doing yesterday and bodily removing protestors from the carriageway.

Peoniesandpeaches · 05/10/2021 08:28

@Franklyfrost

Ecocide is genocide. He’s not doing himself any favours by saying it out loud but he’s right. The dying person in the ambulance has human drama. But the fact that the dying person could be one of the 50,000 deaths a year in the uk from air pollution (house of commons air audit 2010) isn’t as dramatic.
Pretty fucking sure you’d be livid if someone you loved dying was referred to as ‘drama’
KingsleyShacklebolt · 05/10/2021 08:30

They really are a bunch of arseholes, aren't they. Them and their mates in the Insulate Britain crowd.

Tilltheend99 · 05/10/2021 08:32

His comments could seriously undermine a very important cause. Protesters should move out of the way for ambulances.

Madein1995 · 05/10/2021 08:34

Can the ambulance or others not just run / nudge the twats with their car? I know it's against all kinds of laws and wouldn't happen but pretty sure all the idiots would move sharpish if they were clipped by a car.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 05/10/2021 08:35

One of them, not the leader, was asked on the radio this morning if he'd allow an ambulance with his sick child in through the barracdes, he wouldn't answer

Load of selfish wankers

merrymouse · 05/10/2021 08:35

Humans are really bad at caring about the big picture.

But these protests just increase focus on the small picture of people not being able to get to work or hospital.

The message received is “I don’t know what these people want, and I don’t think they do either”.

Nanananani · 05/10/2021 08:35

I’ve never wanted insulation less than right now watching this shower of absolute idiots

Dasher789 · 05/10/2021 08:36

Its not enough to just get out the way of ambulances anyway, there was a man recently whose Mum either died or is now in a severely altered state due to not getting to the hospital in time and was stuck behind the insulate people.

A pp has said they don't have leaders but have a strict policy on letting ambulances through. Without leaders, who can enforce overarching policy?!

By all means protest peacefully but others have rights too and surely the ability to get down the motorway to work or to hospital us covered in some way by human rights??

FatAnkles · 05/10/2021 08:37

When a road is blocked by IB or XR take over Oxford Circus my thought isn't, "Yes we should be doing more to stop climate change"i it's, "f---ing hell, ok, I'll know to avoid that area". Disclaimer: I'm solely a public transport user.

The problem is their tactics don't work. Londoners just drag them away and swear at them, and the Government take out injunctions against them.

I don't think the government are taking the environment seriously enough but I view these idiots as loons who inconvenience my day.

Dasher789 · 05/10/2021 08:38

@nanananani me too! Heating on windows open Grin (until the end of my fixed rate Wink )

Findwen · 05/10/2021 08:42

@Franklyfrost

Humans are really bad at caring about the big picture.

The vast majority of XR roadblocks let ambulances through, they often talk to the police when planning routes and close roads that are closed during marathons etc so that there are established alternative routes for emergency services.

Not All XR Are Like That !
Pr1mr0se · 05/10/2021 08:45

How anyone can is a good question. They are a doomsday style cult, not a cause. They would do better lobbying the government direct rather than this style of demonstration.

TheGirlCat · 05/10/2021 08:45

@tenredthings

ER are doing everything they can to get climate change in the front of peoples thoughts. Climate Change is a huge tsunami approaching us and people don't want to look at it. We are running out of time !

The ambulance comment is straight out of the Trump schoolbook of what the fuckery. Say something super controversial and outrageous, everyone talks about it in an outraged manner but the core message Climate Change will hopefully enter people's consciousness enough to promote the action needed. The fact is the protesters do get out of the way of ambulances. Their goal is to promote change. Being outrageous gets media coverage and sometimes negative coverage gets the core message out there faster.

As a leftie who is truly worried about climate change, sorry @tenredthings but I think you're delusional if you think Climate Change enters people's consciousness after a comment like that one. I can promise you that the last thing people would think about is climate change. They would think the group are a bunch of evil dangerous and soulless sociopaths. Climate change wouldn't even enter their minds. And for those whom climate change is important, it would turn them off it and make them feel disillusioned with the whole movement. It is counterproductive and achieves nothing.
Thesearmsofmine · 05/10/2021 08:45

I think most people care about the bigger picture but they also care about the here and now. Blocking roads is not going to have the desired affect, unless the plan is to make people less sympathetic to their cause.

Lalliella · 05/10/2021 08:46

It’s Insulate Britain not Extension Rebellion, you should get Mumsnet HQ to change your title.

Roger Hallam is a cunt though.

Lalliella · 05/10/2021 08:47

*Extinction 😂

merrymouse · 05/10/2021 08:47

But the fact that the dying person could be one of the 50,000 deaths a year in the uk from air pollution (house of commons air audit 2010) isn’t as dramatic.

If he honestly cared about the 50,000 people he wouldn’t be delivering a message that can so easily be spun into “environmentalists want to kill your children”.

SudokuWillNotSaveYou · 05/10/2021 08:50

Roger Hallam is the co-founder of Extinction Rebellion and current leader of Insulate Britain. They can claim they have nothing to do with him or his new group, Insulate Britain, all they want, but it’s a lie, and there’s proof:
thecritic.co.uk/astroturfing-xr/
Extinction Rebellion was supporting Insulate Britain in their “private” WhatsApp groups.

Roger Hallam is the guy who Gail Bradbrook met after she spent a huge amount of money to go to South America, have a massive drug trip, came back, and decided to found Extinction Rebellion - they met when he was getting a PhD from Kings College London in “radical campaign design.”

He’s the guy who runs Insulate Britain when forcing workers to live in his own uninsulated barn with a G rating (another user couldn’t believe you could rent anything below an E rating).

And yes, he said this (LostMarbles2021 who questioned it earlier is a big Extinction Rebellion supporter from another thread). I apologize for DM link, but it’s better than the Mirror link:

 • it was on Unbreak the World podcast
 • it was about a crying woman trying to get to her mother in hospital or follow an ambulance
 • he specifically said he wouldn’t let an ambulance with a dying patient though
Source: www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10056407/Now-eco-mob-block-Blackwall-Tunnel-Insulate-Britain-launch-ELEVENTH-day-protests.html

I don’t like the DM, but at least they include some salient points about this.

He is who he is. He is the co-founder of Extinction Rebellion. Privately they support him still. And he’s the current leader of Insulate Britain. It’s impossible to ever support Insulate Britain to the tiniest degree between what they do (not ACTUALLY insulating a single building? Not stopping a single extra person of dying from cold this coming winter?) and this being their leader.

And yes, there are his comments about the Holocaust.

I saw a video yesterday of them getting nudged by a car and they carried on sitting there
eggsandwich · 05/10/2021 08:53

Would he feel the same if it was his loved ones, I suspect not.

Bjarnum · 05/10/2021 08:55

SudokuWillNotSaveYou Great stuff - succinct, informed, verifiable.

HikingforScenery · 05/10/2021 08:57
They really should have got rid of him after the Holocaust comments www.independent.co.uk/climate-change/news/extinction-rebellion-founder-roger-hallam-holocaust-genocide-nazis-a9211781.html
Did I misread or misunderstand? He compared the Holocaust to the massacre of Congolese by Belgians. 6million died in the former and around 10million in the latter.
Or is it his choice of words?

Kleptaklunky · 05/10/2021 09:00

Do you really think that?
