Dream is to live in Hampshire i a detached forever house, lovely garden, balmy evenings, bbqs and outdoor dining.... probably around a £500k - £600k house.

We currently live in Scotland, work for NHS, DH works for local authority. Age 48 / 51 £100k joint income, no kids. £250k net worth.

AIBU to plan to move to Hampshire and find a lovely house and work ?

Winchester is a lovely place to live, I agree. I'm a 10 min walk from city centre, everything I need is in walking distance. I chose it carefully and wouldn't live anywhere else. People are nice, many 🐕, water meadows and cathedral. If you need a big city then Southampton is about 10 miles away.

@Peggytheredhen we are not far from Stonehenge, Salisbury, and Bath. We live in a small market town with lush green surroundings. It's calm and peaceful but a really good place to access some good towns, countryside and seaside areas. Nothing is much more than an hour away really.

Are you planning on having kids? If not do you need the 500-600k detached house? How about a 2/3 bed semi? Would that not make the dream more achievable?

I'm also an easy walk to the city centre. Where are you? I'm in Fulflood.

I live in Hampshire, there are lots of lovely areas, I also like the fact that it's easy to get to London or down to the coast. Winchester is fabulous, but very expensive (apart from Stanmore, but that's very much a student area). If you're looking for a job in the NHS then you should have lots of options. Do you want to be in a town or a village? Coast or countryside?

👋 hi also new forest but the other side of the a35 to Lymington 🙂

Didn't Winchester score highly on the "pretentious up themselves residents" thread? I need to find it again. I know Guildford and Bath were high on the list.

Peggytheredhen · 14/10/2021 12:56

Winchester is indeed lovely but very very expensive. Lots of people move out because of this. There will always be examples of a house there which someone can technically afford but it's not good value for an average family. It's also very competitive to buy there.

I live in Fareham and literally cannot believe there are people wanting to live here. I'll swap!

Oh God yes, you do get (probably a small) proportion of them who think themselves rather special. We refer to it as "of the Winchester persuasion" (meaning entitled / snobbish). Dh and I have been considering where we wish to retire to in 15 years or so (would be prudent to move into a town or city rather than our rural location), and I am erring towards Salisbury rather than Winchester for this very reason

Here's the thread - eventually found it! www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/4245827-Snobbiest-places-in-the-UK
