Garbanzo · 02/10/2021 23:25

Dream is to live in Hampshire i a detached forever house, lovely garden, balmy evenings, bbqs and outdoor dining.... probably around a £500k - £600k house.

We currently live in Scotland, work for NHS, DH works for local authority. Age 48 / 51 £100k joint income, no kids. £250k net worth.

AIBU to plan to move to Hampshire and find a lovely house and work ?

I'd forgotten about the buses. Awful. Expensive.

Fadingout · 03/10/2021 13:47

My aunties live in Hampshire. One just outside of Winchester and the other in Romsey. They both love Hampshire but have said it’s very very built up now and getting about can be tricky. My aunt is thinking of re-locating abroad at some point. If you’re able to and you want to why not move.

Iamclearlyamug · 03/10/2021 13:47

I live just outside fareham on the outskirts of the meon valley and it’s a wonderful place to live, but expensive. A 3 bed semi type place in one of the nice villages would set you back around 450k (obviously I don’t know what sort of house you want) but it’s within easy distance of Southampton, Portsmouth and Winchester for jobs - but beautiful countryside within minutes 🤷‍♀️😊

megletthesecond · 03/10/2021 13:52

We're in Basingatoke. It is handy being able to get to London and the South west easily.

Southampton and Gosport are the absolute pits! Dirty, high crime and a constant sense of missed opportunity.
I don't come from Southampton or live in So'ton, so am not personally invested, but it's my nearest big city to travel to and I would say it's far from the pits. What makes you say that?

This made me laugh more than it should.

JackofGentlemen · 03/10/2021 23:51

I live in the Fareham area. About 3 miles from the town centre. But I live in a small, quaint village, so it's a bit different to places which are closer to Fareham.

I absolutely love where we live and I'm never going to move far. But what I will say is that there is a HUGE amount of roadwork going on, temporary traffic lights everywhere, 50mph speed limit on the motorway and massive housing developments springing up everywhere. On the plus side it means that you could probably find a decent property, but commuting anywhere by road is a nightmare at the moment.

Lee is nice and not too expensive. Steer well clear of Gosport!!! Unless Stokes Bay, that's quite nice.

Or how about the Isle of Wight? Property prices are cheaper so you'd get more for your money, plus it's quieter. You can cross the Solent in half an hour by ferry, or in about 10-15 mins on the Red Jet or Hovercraft.

Rachie1973 · 03/10/2021 23:53

I came from Hampshire, New Forest. It’s an expensive ‘dream’ really.

I’m not sure I’d go back, despite my family all being there, including one of my kids.

I just imagine how far my money would go in Norfolk etc instead.

We love living in this area. As you say country one way, seaside the other. The IOW is 20 minutes away over the water and it's an easy train journey to London.
Hampshire is so green and gently beautiful. The prettiest county imho.

@Garbanzo

I only want to live in Hampshire so I can be close to family there. This is a dream and possibly not achievable... I just love it down there. Looking at Gosport, Fareham, Southampton ... but the dream is lovely suburban place by the sea. It's just so much more expensive and I'm not sure we could get jobs.
I live in Hampshire, in the New Forest, not far from the coast. Semi-rural.

You could definitely do it with your budget- you’ve just got to find the right area. Don’t go for the obvious ones; look at a map along the coastline so you don’t miss all the small villages.

Good luck!

DixonD · 04/10/2021 00:03

Where I am is a lot nicer than Gosport or Fareham. I would head over towards the New Forest if possible.

DixonD · 04/10/2021 00:08

@helpthewhos

I agree about much of it being over developed. Ringwood and the NF in general are lovely but pretty much inaccessible in the summer because all the roads are blocked by holiday makers. It's pricey as well, you would need a lot more than £500k in southern Hampshire to get a decent sized garden. As some people have said the more rural bits possibly, but with non existent bus services you are then going to be driving everywhere.
No, you wouldn’t need more than that unless you’re looking for acres of garden land.

I live there!

ellyeth · 04/10/2021 00:28

Perhaps you can move to Hampshire but you would have to forget the dream house and go for something a little less ambitious. Why, for instance, does your house have to be detached (higher council tax and usually more expensive to heat)?

I think being near my family would be the main thing for me and for that I would give up some of the things that I would ideally like. I expect a lot of people might like a house slightly better than the one they have but you can go through life like that and end up never being satisfied with what you have got.

JelliedHeels mentioned Winchester and that is a lovely city

Peggytheredhen · 04/10/2021 01:05

This thread makes me feel like Hampshire is a well kept secret.

OP, there are quite a few jobs down here and areas where you could definitely get a nice detached house for 5-600K.

Pmsl....in Gospoet (where we have no fuel, endless roadworks/temporary traffic lights, the A32 one way in and out, the M27 stuck at 50my and a SMART deathtrap. But love where I am, near Stokes Bay, just glad to have a job in Gosport finally and no need to commute in and out. OP, seriously stay out of Gosport as the traffic is a pig and more houses inevitable what with all the redundant MOD land. Stokes Bay and Lee are great to walk along, minutes from me. I work in healthcare but won't look at a job at QA hospital due to the travel/parking. Whiteley is forever expanding but will get up to Southampton and Portsmouth hospitals.feathers I love the sea on one side, cities like Southampton, Chichester for theatre, Winchester, Sailsbury all under an hour by train. Good luck but I think the traffic will be a culture shock. I come up to Scotland by coach several times a year and the space as we get North is papable. Don't think I could hack a winter though. Grew up in Fareha m, live in Gosport. PM if you need info. X
AdmiralJaneway · 04/10/2021 19:14

I’m in Fareham (moved here from Wiltshire) and I love being close enough to the sea again. Yes it’s a bit urban around here but we’re very close to some lovely places and I do love being close to the ferry for France!

BlueberrySugar · 04/10/2021 19:20

@Garbanzo

I really mean Fareham and the area around there to live it's just that I have family near Southampton.

DH and I lived in London and Gloucestershire before in our younger years and loved it but moved back to Scotland to look after parents.

Now, for our 50s, 60s and then retirement, we would love to live in Hampshire.

I'm in a surrounding area to Fareham and wouldn't want to move to Fareham in all honesty. It's a bit of a dog hole.
BlueberrySugar · 04/10/2021 19:23

@CarolNoE Gosport traffic isn't that bad. Only bad if you take the Fareham Road route!

Knowivedonewrong · 04/10/2021 19:24

Horndean, Clanfield, Hambledon are nice areas of Hampshire.

Peggytheredhen · 04/10/2021 19:51

There was a thread on here a while ago where the OP wanted to move near a beach in Hampshire and posters in the Fareham area were singing its hidden gem praises.

toneytone · 12/10/2021 12:30

Hello, found this as we're looking at moving down to Hampshire, currently up near Gatwick. Waterlooville sounds good from some of the comments here, any areas to avoid when looking for houses? Will drive down this weekend for a look, as we've never been there.
Cheers!

Iamclearlyamug · 12/10/2021 15:46

@JackofGentlemen @AdmiralJaneway big wave, we must live so close to each other 😁😁

I live/lived near you

Those roadworks are a fucking nightmare and so many of them

It was even worse during the petrol ‘crisis’….roadworks on every road out except the one with the petrol queues!

Yep 😀

I only moved from where you are to further along the coast road in June

Laska2Meryls · 12/10/2021 16:07

I grew up in the Portsmouth suburbs and have moved around a bit , inc West Sussex , but now live on the Isle of wight.. You'd easily find your dream home here .. Its much cheaper.. yes you have the ferry but plenty of people commute and its easy to get to Portsmouth or Southampton and we have plenty of beaches ! ..

Take a look at West Wight ...
