To want to live in Hampshire

Garbanzo · 02/10/2021 23:25

Dream is to live in Hampshire i a detached forever house, lovely garden, balmy evenings, bbqs and outdoor dining.... probably around a £500k - £600k house.

We currently live in Scotland, work for NHS, DH works for local authority. Age 48 / 51 £100k joint income, no kids. £250k net worth.

AIBU to plan to move to Hampshire and find a lovely house and work ?

Nice! Not detached but a big enough garden to have the family round for a BBQ. We're considering Winchester too. I like Southampton for shopping, we go to the theatre there every now and then.

It's funny because I live in Hampshire and have many of the things you describe, but my dream is to move to Scotland and settle up there
SouthCoastShell · 12/10/2021 16:31

I live in the centre of fareham and love this part of Hampshire. Feel free to message me for more info x

lockdownmadnessdotcom · 12/10/2021 16:43

I live in Hampshire but not on the coast. Winchester is really expensive, you'll only get a shoebox there for your budget.

Romsey is quite nice, or you could look at Salisbury - not Hampshire, but a nice city not dissimilar to Winchester but somewhat cheaper as it's further away from London. I wouldn't go for Dorset, communications links are rubbish.

Petersfield is also nice but not sure about the prices there.

Not sure I'd choose to live in Hampshire if I lived in Scotland though!

Nocutenamesleft · 12/10/2021 16:44

I’ve lived here all my life end just brought W house here.

What’s your budget? There’s loads of places round here. You could get W lovely place for 500k.

Nocutenamesleft · 12/10/2021 16:45

Arbour Winchester. Outside of London they reckon it’s the highest priced place in the uk to live.

You can go to places like north baddesly. Southampton end. But romsey way.

lockdownmadnessdotcom · 12/10/2021 16:46

lovely garden, balmy evenings, bbqs and outdoor dining

PS not sure where you are in Scotland, but the differences in climate are not THAT big!

I've had this argument the other way when I wanted to move to Scotland and DH said it was too cold. It's not the difference between Sicily and Iceland. You still only get about two days a year when you can sit and eat outside (and then you get accosted by wasps so what's the point).

Peggytheredhen · 12/10/2021 17:13

That doesn't happen a lot in this Hampshire house. And I second the wasp factor... But then I would also love to move to Scotland.

I live in the new forest

Big wave to anyone in this thread close to Lyndhurst. Lymington way!

sociallydistained · 12/10/2021 17:34
That is in Stanmore, a dare I say it undesirable area of Winchester. I grew up there and my brother still lives there…. I would avoid that like the plague. But yes you could walk into it the two centre in about 20/25 mins from that house.
Pelogin · 12/10/2021 19:36

I live in Winchester, and it's like everywhere. Some beautiful parts and some not so nice areas. I've live all over UK and abroad as DH is Army. We chose to buy in Winchester so we didn't have to move DD school for the 9th time!

schoolsoutforever · 12/10/2021 19:53

I live in Hampshire and come from Scotland originally. It’s nice enough in Hampshire but really not that much cop compared with parts of Scotland. It does get hotter in summer though. It’s fine but not a beautiful idyll I don’t think. I suppose the New Forest is quite nice (not where I live).

Peggytheredhen · 12/10/2021 21:00

There are some v pretty parts though. Many obscure villages. Test Valley, New Forest, Meon Valley, West Sussex border are nice.

Peggytheredhen · 12/10/2021 21:00

And many trees...

Twickerhun · 12/10/2021 21:04
Stanmore? After Scotland. Nope
sociallydistained · 12/10/2021 21:20

😂😂

itswonderful · 12/10/2021 21:31

I grew up in a village that is in a Fareham postcode. Absolutely lovely, though I wouldn't live in central Fareham itself. Most have my relatives have moved to Gosport for various reasons over the years but apart from property price, there are no upsides to Gosport and I wouldn't choose to live there myself. I definitely wouldn't live in Southampton.

It is in my 5 year plan to relocate back down there as I'm a good 200 miles away and although I live in a 'desirable' location now, it is just too expensive.

nokidshere · 12/10/2021 21:36

DH dreams of a house in the new forest. It's unlikely to happen though. We live an hours drive away in Wiltshire which is green and beautiful but a bit cheaper.

Peggytheredhen · 12/10/2021 21:45

I dream of moving to Wiltshire @nokidshere Smile whereabouts-ish are you?

Pollypett · 12/10/2021 23:14

Come to Southsea - its lovely! Compact, quirky, beach on the doorstep, lovely common, good range of bars and restaurants, diverse range of people, reasonable public services, good transport links to Sussex, Surrey, rest of Hampshire, London, Isle of Wight, France, Spain...

We moved here five years ago from London and love it - we are 500 metres or so from the seafront and can walk/ cycle everywhere with a relaxed pace of life. God public sector jobs too - local council and hospital short cycle/ bus/ drive away, other options at West Sussex Council, Southampton Council etc within a short distance

Although most housing is terraced you will be able to get a good house for £600-700k.

LimitIsUp · 13/10/2021 09:40

Check out these villages near the Hampshire / Wiltshire border:

Wellow
Sherfield English
Bramshaw
Plaitford
Landford (technically Wiltshire but only half a mile over the border)
Nomansland (technically Wilthsire but only half a mile over the border)

New Forest location but not in the tourist hotspots that get gridlocked with traffic in the summer

LimitIsUp · 13/10/2021 09:44

No denying its pricey though www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/111912662#/?channel=RES_BUY

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 13/10/2021 10:08

I live in the New Forest, so a bit biased! Wouldn't live in Southampton but yes Winchester is lovely, though expensive. There is a lot of traffic around here though, particularly in the summer - but the road network is pretty good. You might find the traffic a shock from being in Scotland. It's great being near the coast, and that's why we moved here.

I live in Winchester and I love it. We have restaurants, shops, cafes, a theatre and a cinema, and great state schools. The countryside is on our doorstep and the coast is close by. We are an hour from London.

Winchester is expensive but the quality of life here is excellent. I have no intention of ever living anywhere else now!
