Was looking for a school cardigan for my daughter and ASDA have one that’s called a “boyfriend” cardigan.

I’ve never heard of it before and am a bit Hmm Am I missing something? AIBU to find this a weird name for an item of clothing for girls?

It’s a descriptor like boyfriend or girlfriend jeans - it means an oversized item like when a girl borrows her boyfriend’s clothes. It’s not about having a boyfriend or attracting one.

Notimeforaname · 02/10/2021 17:19

Yes it a style now. Usually just oversized/baggy. I agree it sounds weird. Just like boyfriend jeans, mom jeans etc

ElephantCup · 02/10/2021 17:19

Boyfriend fit cardigans have been around for years

EvilRingahBitch · 02/10/2021 17:20

They've been called this for ages. I guess you could pick holes in the heteronormativity but it just means a cardigan for women which is long-line and fairly loose fitting, as if borrowed from a man (but with sleeves and shoulder width of the appropriate size for a woman).

Peridot1 · 02/10/2021 17:20

It’s just a style. A loose fitting cardigan. Boyfriend jeans, Mom jeans etc. Just a style. Nothing to do with having a boyfriend. Come from borrowing your boyfriend’s cardigan and it being loose.

Have you really not come across it? Boyfriend jeans have been around for a few years now.

MsVestibule · 02/10/2021 17:21

I've only ever heard of boyfriend jeans but it all sounds weird to me. Tight jeans are often in fashion for men - why aren't they called girlfriend jeans?

bestsoupintown · 02/10/2021 17:21

I think I bought a boyfriend cardigan at least 10 years ago. Amazed that you've never seen this before!

EmeraldShamrock · 02/10/2021 17:21

It's just an oversized style.

burritofan · 02/10/2021 17:22

Boyfriend cardigans, boyfriend jeans, boyfriend jumpers, etc, have been around for at least a decade! A quick Google would have got to the bottom of this.

I don't think they'd be very popular 😂

Yabu
It’s a term that has been used for years
I’m surprised you haven’t heard of it before

HunkyPunk · 02/10/2021 17:25

I think ‘boyfriend’ in clothing denotes something which is loose fitting, with a cut more usual in men’s clothes, such as wider shoulders or longer length.

seaandsandcastles · 02/10/2021 17:26

YABU. It’s been around years.

PinkBuffalo · 02/10/2021 17:26

Yabu
It has been a thing for a long while. Means looser fit I think

BoredZelda · 02/10/2021 17:27

I really haven’t. But I’m quite old and don’t follow fashion, or shop on the high street much for clothes.

I did Google it but that never came up.

But the naming of boyfriend jeans etc. comes from women borrowing clothes, which are too big for them, from men, so they are a bit baggy, which I certainly have done when young; no man ever borrowed my clothes, which were too small for him, and styled them as skinny fit.
fallfallfall · 02/10/2021 17:29

fashion term that's been around for decades. a bit kinder than "old man" jeans, vest or cardigan. means oversized and loose fitting.

As am I, now so many have explained it 🤣

I guess because women are much more likely to borrow mens clothing than the other way around

BarefootHippieChick · 02/10/2021 17:31

Oops cross post dietrich !

BoredZelda · 02/10/2021 17:31

a bit kinder than "old man" jeans

But they don’t actually sell them as “old man jeans” do they? Or maybe they do, as clearly I’m completely not with it when it comes to shopping. Never heard of “mom jeans” either 😅

Because anything related to women is considered inferior or a downgrade, whereas a woman wearing something "belonging" to men is getting an upgrade to a superior state.

Boyfriend fit clothes have been around for decades

How many decades? Because I genuinely don’t recall seeing this as a named style back when I actually did shop in the likes of River Island as a teen more than 3 decades ago.
