They've been around for at least ten years probably twenty, but no, not thirty - baggy jeans in the nineties were just caller baggy jeans.

seaandsandcastles · 02/10/2021 17:37

How many decades?

The fit originated in 1873. Marilyn Monroe popularised them in the 1960s.

So a lot.

A quick Google would have got to the bottom of this.

I did Google it but that never came up.

That’s strange, if I google ‘boyfriend cardigan’, examples of them are the only things which come up!

They definitely were called 'boyfriend' jeans when I was a teen...and that was in the 70s 🤣

Yes, they come up, but not why they are called that.

And none of the ones I saw were for kids, which is why I wondered if it were common in kids clothes.

They’ve literally been around for years, as have boyfriend t-shirts

No you didnt, you type the words boyfriend and cardigan into the search box and you get loads of results

No one's going to believe you have the type of internet where Google doesn't give any answers Grin

Granllanog · 02/10/2021 18:07

I'm in my 50s ...........boyfriend cardigans have been around for many many years!!!

CustardySergeant · 02/10/2021 18:09

I'm also old (67) and have never been into fashion, even when young, but even I'm familiar with the term.

BiLuminous · 02/10/2021 18:10

Haha, can't believe you've never heard it before! There's men's grandad tops too but they're just a style!

Cadburycup77 · 02/10/2021 18:11

@ftw163532 why do we have mom jeans then? Are why are they fashionable if inferior?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 02/10/2021 18:13

@MsVestibule

I've only ever heard of boyfriend jeans but it all sounds weird to me. Tight jeans are often in fashion for men - why aren't they called girlfriend jeans?
Because girlfriend jeans are a tweaking of the boyfriend cut, just a little higher in the waist and narrower in the leg, whereas you're looking for a skinny men's jean which still has the lower rise to fit underneath a man's belly

I thought mom jeans were an unfashionable style Grin

Justreadingtheforum3 · 02/10/2021 18:15

I wouldn't date a bloke wearing that.

Blackkoala · 02/10/2021 18:16

It’s just a style term - it means roomy / slouchy. You get boyfriend jeans too. The idea is they look like you borrowed them from a boy (so more masculine styling or fit, but ultimately still designed for women).

Boyfriend cardigans have been around for a while now, I love them

Yes, they come up, but not why they are called that.

I googled what does boyfriend cardigan mean and the first result was From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English boyfriend jeans/cardigan/jacket etcused to refer to a piece of clothing for women that is quite big and loose

@slashlover Crosspost!!

muddyford · 02/10/2021 18:27

Boyfriend clothes for women are a bit looser than the equivalent item made not as 'boyfriend. The term has been around for decades.

JudgeJ · 02/10/2021 18:31

@ElephantCup

Boyfriend fit cardigans have been around for years
As a student in the 60s I bought a man's grey cardigan with pockets from M and S every year so I suppose I bought a 'boyfriend' cardie 50 years ago, never thought of myself as being so trendy! By the end of each year it had very holey elbows and the pockets were somewhere around my knees but I loved them.
BiscuitLover09876 · 02/10/2021 18:32

Weird for kids!!!

ShowOfHands · 02/10/2021 18:36

See also grandad shirts.

And, er, travelling pants.

WhereYouLeftIt · 02/10/2021 18:37

I had a boyfriend cardigan back in the 80s, and I don't think it was a new idea then. I was under the impression the term dated back to 1950s USA?
