You can also get girlfriend jeans. At least you can in Topshop.

notacooldad · 02/10/2021 18:46

I used to have a grandad shirt in the 80's.
A collar less striped cotton shirt that I loved to death!

AmDillDandin · 02/10/2021 18:54

I was at high school in the late 80's, early 90's and the most fashionable thing to wear with uniform was a charcoal grey men's lambs wool cardigan from M&S, known as a 'boyfriend cardigan'.

@BoredZelda

A quick Google would have got to the bottom of this.

I did Google it but that never came up.

Nothing? 🤣 What did you type in?

You should take your google back to the shop it is obviously very broken.

well I am 48 and the first time I came across the term enough to take a meantl note is when Harry and Meghan stepped out as a couple for the first time and she was wearing a white shirt described as a boyfriend shirt. She looked fabulous, and not as if she was wearoing oversize in order to avoid hiding her stomach the way I do. :(

tbh though I am so unfashionable that even the clothes I donate to the charity shop get rejected so what do I know? Grin

*mental note

It's totally weird considering the garment is aimed at 3-4 year olds (oldest age 8). Completely unnecessary to call it this (even if it is a trend in adults clothing).

Why not just a 'longline' or 'oversized' cardigan?

BoredZelda · 02/10/2021 19:26

I googled what does boyfriend cardigan mean and the first result was From Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English boyfriend jeans/cardigan/jacket etcused to refer to a piece of clothing for women that is quite big and loose

Yes, yes, well done, you are sooo much better at googling than I am. Here, have 🏅

Yeah, it probably wouldn’t have occurred to me as weird if I had been looking for adult clothing, even though I had no idea what it was (and am apparently terrible at googling, and so not with it and all the other things)

I wouldn’t have been seen dead in M&S when I was at high school at the same time 😂

Same 😂

Because it isn’t a longline or oversized cardigan. It’s a boyfriend cardigan.

It’s not a trend, it’s a particular fit.

Just like you wouldn’t call a peplum skirt anything other than a peplum skirt, because that’s simply what it is.

I find that difficult to believe as a search turns up myriad results as well as images.

@MsVestibule

I've only ever heard of boyfriend jeans but it all sounds weird to me. Tight jeans are often in fashion for men - why aren't they called girlfriend jeans?
One of two reasons. Either because men don't usually fit well into their girlfriend's jeans, due to being too tall or not having the arse cheeks to fill them, or because the men who wear tight jeans don't usually have girlfriends.

Boyfriend Jacket
www.fabulousafter40.com/casual-boyfriend-jacket/

My DD had one 15 years ago, they were a fashion must have then for teens. The sleeves were turned up to show the lining.

Djifunrsn · 02/10/2021 20:58

I can't stand fashion and even I have heard of this style op

You may find it as difficult to believe as you like, I’m simply saying what I saw.

My daughter had these for school about 10 years ago. They're good for girls that want to something long and loose fitting.

Only if you've been under a rock for the past few years & missing this term used to describe over-sized clothing very frequently.

Ah, your usual kindly self, Zelda I see.

Siameasy · 02/10/2021 21:17

It was considered cute when I was a teen for girls to borrow their boyfriend’s top. Or it was the boyfriend being chivalrous when typically the girl was out on the town all dolled up without a coat and after the club kicked out he would lend his outer garment which would look slouchy since men are almost always bigger than women.

CathyorClaire · 02/10/2021 21:26

I have a Levis Ex boyfriend trucker.

Am clearly taking the theme to the next level Grin

Boyfriend fit cardigans have been around for years
This
BrendaBubbles · 02/10/2021 21:30

Because anything related to women is considered inferior or a downgrade, whereas a woman wearing something "belonging" to men is getting an upgrade to a superior state.

Or maybe it’s because women frequently borrow men’s clothing for comfort but men almost never borrow women’s clothing unless it is for a fetish.

Glad to keep you entertained, given you apparently follow me everywhere to find what I’m doing. Maybe find a hobby?

Well done for repeating what everyone else has said and which I have acknowledged. Anything new to add?
