To think this is far too much food?

519 replies

LemonSherbetFancies · 30/09/2021 22:42

Made a saucepan of bolognese mince and DP gave it to my 2 grandkids aged 8 and 9. Alongside pasta. They ate the lot. Aibu to think this is far too much food for 2 kids and also annoyed as although I hadn't said, it was also meant to be for us. He knew I was late him from work so feel a bit pissed off that I know have to cook something else.

Homeopathic mince. There could be a market in this.

Reminds me of the children's story Stone Soup too. Grin

Practicebeingpatient · 01/10/2021 10:31

500g sounds like a lot for two small children but if they ate it then they must have been hungry enough for it. Spag Bol is fairly dense and filling so it’s not something you can mindlessly hoover up once you’ve eaten your fill. You might need to rethink portion sizes for those two - or maybe they are having growth spurts.

EspressoDoubleShot · 01/10/2021 10:31
@ZenNudist
500g of mince makes 12 portions and more?! That's 40g of mince a portion.

For reference this is 60g of mince so 33% more than the portion size you claim.

Mumsnet magic mince. Or just a family of desperately hungry people.
Haha at Mm magic mince yes a mere thimbleful magic mince will suffice
Everyone will be stuffed on that enormous 40g . A walloping 12 portions
And of course one must emphasise that their own children do not overeat,ever. Overeating is for other people children. Those who lack control and decorum

How can you ask this question if you give no sense of size?!

How can you ask this question if you don't RTFT? OP has already answered how big the pack was.
@pelosi
Maybe when asking a question about if something is "too much" you should give context?
Maybe she should have done that from the outset?
Maybe I don't have time to read through 11 pages of comments?
Maybe you do?
Anyway have a good day!

Also - sister's husband says that non-italians never put enough sauce on the pasta. Italy is a big country with lots of different food ideas but the idea that they are all just delicately slurping up a few barely-dressed noodles is just silly.

idontlikealdi · 01/10/2021 10:36

2 adults 2 teens, 750g pack too much, 500g not enough. I don't want lentils and thirty cans of tomato in my Ragu. But then we eat a whole chicken for dinner.

If I do it properly and have pancetta, soffrito, cream etc 500g is enough.

@Bogofftosomewherehot, all you have to do is click on the handy little link at the bottom of the OP's post which says 'See next' or 'See all'. Then you just see everything the OP has posted.

@StellaCinnamon

Can someone give me a good Bolognese recipe? I’m looking for a new one!
Mince, tomato and a bit of red onionGrin
shinynewapple21 · 01/10/2021 10:40

Thing with bolognese sauce and pasta is you can have a small serving of sauce with a large serving of pasta or a large serving of sauce with a small amount of pasta . Both will fill you up the same . Different costs and different nutrients but they haven't necessarily eaten too much food.

MrsSkylerWhite · 01/10/2021 10:40

If they were hungry, they were hungry🤷‍♀️

PurpleDaisies · 01/10/2021 10:40

Mince, tomato and a bit of red onion

And Asian spices. Wink

mynameiscalypso · 01/10/2021 10:43

I have always drawn a distinction between Bolognese (slow cooked, rich, no tomatoes I think is the 'proper way' isn't it?) and what my mum always called 'meat sauce' which is nowhere near traditional. The latter is what I tend to make especially when I'm feeding DS because I add lots of veggies (soffrito, grated courgette, tomato, lentils). It's not authentic but he likes it and it's relatively quick and easy to make. I think I've made a proper Bolognese once and while it was delicious, it's not an every day thing.

MrsSkylerWhite · 01/10/2021 10:43

“I can get at least 12 portions out of that maybe more.”

Sorry, am I reading that correctly? 12 portions of bolognese from 500g of mince?

Are you a family of mice?

EspressoDoubleShot · 01/10/2021 10:44

And kidney beans, a heap of vegetables and served in a thimble so as not to overeat

hangrylady · 01/10/2021 10:45

@Biscoffee

Op, I have many grandchildren and if this had happened in my house Id laugh about it and it would go down in the future as the day the boys ate all the dinner. In fact I’d probably even tell them they’d need bigger shoes to go home in and a pair of grandads trousers.

Rejoice in the boys, fill your heart with the joy of them and know how lucky you are to have them round your table.

You sound like a lovely grandma. That would be my mum's attitude too, although my kids probably wouldn't have eaten all that as their Grandad would probably have spoiled their appetite by sneaking them biscuits before tea!
HarebrightCedarmoon · 01/10/2021 10:46

Mince, tomato and a bit of red onion

Onion, mince, jar of Dolmio Wink Halo

hangrylady · 01/10/2021 10:49

"Meat is not cheap, I pay £7 for 500g of lamb mince made from meat with fat removed, which would feed four people".

Shoulda gone to Aldi Grin

SylvanasWindrunner · 01/10/2021 10:49

I tried a couple of spag bols using some of the MN suggestions on a thread recently and no one liked them Blush Went back to my usual of just passata, tomato purée, beef stock, onions and a dash of cinnamon and order was restored.

Doomscrolling · 01/10/2021 10:55

@mynameiscalypso, I’d call the former ragù and the latter spag bol.

As that (really rather lovely) R4 programme showed, the Italian ragu sauce is very slowly cooked and meat is the star whereas the British bolognese is a quick midweek dinner and has plenty of tomatoes and often other veg as well.

Both are great, both fiercely defended by their proponents (as this thread beautifully shows) and every family has its own version.

I’m sorry you had no dinner, OP. I’m even more sorry for the parents of the two lads who ate a pound of mince between them. Quite the digestive event!

No wonder we have an obesity crisis.

I did Domestic Science O Level and when planning (then cooking) meals, the standard allowance of red meat for a portion was 4oz / 100g.
This was in 1982.

Fine to bulk out with lentils and veg, but just the volume of meat consumption is eye-watering.

A 500g pack of mince bulked out should easily feed 6 people with rice/pasta/spuds alongside on normal portions.

HarebrightCedarmoon · 01/10/2021 10:58

still surprised by Asian spices, but whatever floats your boat

More of Keema curry thing I'd say.

Did you try wine? A little merlot or similar- fruity but not sweet- really does lift it. Cabernet sauvignons also seem to turn out well. I have had wine ruin a sauce though, absolutely. I put some cheap red in, Blossom Hill or similar name, a hamper gift, and the resulting sauce was almost vinegary, barely edible.

And cinnamon? I normally put cinnamon in shakshuka, goulash and other paprika-y dishes, never occurred to me to try it in a pasta sauce- thanks, will try a dash.

I imagine DP had his share as well but didn't save any for you.
