To think this is far too much food?

LemonSherbetFancies · 30/09/2021 22:42

Made a saucepan of bolognese mince and DP gave it to my 2 grandkids aged 8 and 9. Alongside pasta. They ate the lot. Aibu to think this is far too much food for 2 kids and also annoyed as although I hadn't said, it was also meant to be for us. He knew I was late him from work so feel a bit pissed off that I know have to cook something else.

Only 12 portions. This family must be so greedy. You need to get a grip on this excess eating. I hope it was low fat mince.

EspressoDoubleShot · 01/10/2021 11:01

I think it’s true to say mn recipes are stinking. Totally bogging.
The mn chicken
The ham cooked in value cola
Every dinner is something to be eked, poked and bulked with heaps of vegetables, loads of lentil, tonnes of pulses.
On mn food is described as a gruelling activity that requires monitoring and portion control.
Every food thread, quickly someone rocks up to chastise everyone that’s there is an obesity crisis (not their child, mind) amongst the lardy masses
Any description of a meal must be qualified with caveats that
1, meal was huuuuge and eaten over days

 1. Restaurant meals are gargantuan and leftovers must be taken off premises (by wheelbarrow) and eaten by tall husbands, children and woman over a period of days
mynameiscalypso · 01/10/2021 11:02
@mynameiscalypso, I’d call the former ragù and the latter spag bol.

As that (really rather lovely) R4 programme showed, the Italian ragu sauce is very slowly cooked and meat is the star whereas the British bolognese is a quick midweek dinner and has plenty of tomatoes and often other veg as well.

Both are great, both fiercely defended by their proponents (as this thread beautifully shows) and every family has its own version.

I’m sorry you had no dinner, OP. I’m even more sorry for the parents of the two lads who ate a pound of mince between them. Quite the digestive event!
That is probably a more accurate way of naming it - I don't tend to use 'spag bol' because I have a weird aversion to spaghetti to tend to - shock horror - use penne pasta! Therefore I feel like I can't call it spag Bol.

Mumsnet gold this thread.

Are your grandkids the size of a house OP? If not then they were probably just hungry. Next time tell your DP what your plans are.
Not going there on the 'I always make it with fluff from the tumble dryer, three tins of chickpeas and some ground cloves and my family eat tiny portions' comments

@idontlikealdi

2 adults 2 teens, 750g pack too much, 500g not enough. I don't want lentils and thirty cans of tomato in my Ragu. But then we eat a whole chicken for dinner.

If I do it properly and have pancetta, soffrito, cream etc 500g is enough.

A WHOLE chicken ? 😱
EspressoDoubleShot · 01/10/2021 11:20

A whole mn chicken will feed 4 for 12days and will serve up roast dinner, curry, soup, risotto, and sandwiches

You’re not mentioning the spoons one can whittle from the bones?

shouldistop · 01/10/2021 11:22

We use 500g for myself, dh, 5yo ds and baby ds and there's still leftovers for lunch the next day. We put a lot of veg in it though.

Hi,

Sorry to derail but am wondering if anyone can help. I have a piece of string and just wondering how long it is? It's a standard piece of string. TIA

Skyeheather · 01/10/2021 11:23

You should have told your DP that you'd made the Bolognese for the four of you. Sometimes mine has no common sense whatsoever and I could see him thinking that was just for him and the kids if I didn't say/stuck a post it note on it!

Yes you are of course correct. I forgot the spoon to scoop & scrape And of course I overlooked the chicken shaver to further eke out ribbons of chicken

Far too long for a reasonable person. There are people struggling to find enough string for their family and then there is you, showing off with your string of privilege.

But then we wouldn’t have this thread 🤷‍♀️

@Ihopeyourcakeisshit - to be honest that is a shit attitude. It is selective quoting and here on a lighthearted note, not really a problem. On other occasions? it is misleading and deliberately lying.

And still nobody is picking up that the selfish DH in this story left his working late wife with no food. Where are the LTB brigade? Slackers.

I have picked it up but I’m being decidedly ignored Grin 😂

SummerHouse · 01/10/2021 11:37

Just to explain on my piece of string. I do not have string privilege. This piece of string services all our family's string needs (16 of us). Once string is used for one purpose, we hand wash it and reuse it for another purpose. Sometimes we twist in some grass or hair if we need it to go a little further. This string has been in the family for many generations and handed down.

DameMaureen · 01/10/2021 11:39

Agree it's his internalized misogyny
