Does anyone else find them to be caricatures of themselves lately? And if you mention you don’t like them to people online (like on comments pages) their fans start bullying you. Like their fans seem properly brainwashed and really defensive.

This isn’t a personal attack on them, I just find them and their fan base very….odd.

Yes!

Againstmachine · 21/09/2021 07:47

They have always been rubbish, they just have a loyal fan base, who find them funny for some reason.

BelleOfTheProvince · 21/09/2021 08:02

I said I thought the drunk driving sentence was pathetic a few years ago, seeing as he could have killed someone and seemed to be get a tap on the wrist.
The 'fans' defended him to the point I had to mute the thread, very aggressive. I stand by what I said though, which was basically that drink drivers should lose their jobs in all industries, as a teacher or police officer doing the same actions would face far more serious consequences.
I also think if drunk driving were sentenced on the act, rather than the consequences (i.e someone could have been killed, rather than someone is killed it'd be more of a deterrent.
Anyway, Ant seemed to get away Scot free, whilst even other celebrities had consequences that dogged their career. Which is bizarre and unfair imo.

PyjamaMamma · 21/09/2021 08:03

Well, we were watching tv the other day and the tiktok advert came on, and I told my husband that I don’t know if it’s because I didn’t grow up in this country and don’t have “national treasures” association but I just don’t get Ant-and-Dec-mania. Odd is a good definition.

Mercurial123 · 21/09/2021 08:34

They are awful, but then again I find most celebrities to be average. Plenty of posters seem to like them on MN.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 21/09/2021 08:41

I don't get it either! Complete pair of twats. And as for the drinking and that token sentence, there's your joke!

ANutAsBigAsABoulder · 21/09/2021 08:45

I am amazed that the drunk driving incident seems to have been consigned to history. It was awful.

I always feel ITV put all their money and effort into a small number of ‘names’ though, who must then continue to succeed and be on absolutely bloody everything. Holly Willoughby, Phillip Schofield and Ben Shepard seem the same. Need a new show hosted? Get the tried and tested in, you all love them! Do we though?

tttigress · 21/09/2021 09:13

Instead of writing in comments, my suggestion would be the one thing itv really don't want you to do.

Simply stop watching.

Can't comment on what they have been doing lately, but I thought their "act" was getting long in the tooth years ago.

Snoozer11 · 21/09/2021 09:20

I think they were more bearable when they were younger. The gimmicks don't suit men in their 40s.

But, Dec is a decent man. And being from the North East, they're an institution you can't dislike. I'd much rather watch them than Schofield or Alison Hammond.

Ant's problems have certainly changed my perspective of him. I agree his easy comeback has been a joke. Although I think it should be said that he was guilty of drink driving because he was over the limit from the night before - he didn't get in his car immediately after getting pissed.

lnsufficientFuns · 21/09/2021 09:22

I find them creepy as fuck

They definitely know where the bodies are buried..

CounsellorTroi · 21/09/2021 09:23

Not defending him, but I imagine loads of people have done that and got away with it.

Sparklingbrook · 21/09/2021 09:23

What has sparked this? I haven't seen them on TV lately. But also would have to Google Black Mirror.

I quite like them on I'm a Celebrity. Saturday Night Takeaway started out great but needs to go in the bin now the last series was woeful.

There are other slebs on my hit list above those two though.

Hihelp · 21/09/2021 10:02

Nothing in particular has sparked this, I just find them really weird, like a fake smiley plastic robot smiling it’s way through a killing spree, surrounded by its sleb pals all smiling and happy. Odd.
They definitely know where the bodies are buried.. Yes!!! I get this!

The drunk driving would have killed anyone else’s career. Like Richard bacon and his drugs. He basically broke up with his wife of many years, and then in the papers he was saying his new gf got him through darkest times? WTAF?

I don’t watch ITV at all, apart from occasional euro/World Cup football every 2 years. I just see them in the news all the time, and that pathetic wedding he had with Philip-I’m gay but I’m staying with my wife and humiliating her, and everyone feels sorry for me- Schofield.

They’re all weirdos.

OP posts:
Hihelp · 21/09/2021 10:04

Sorry that doesn’t make sense, but the pathetic wedding with all his sleb friends and Philip Schofield. They live in their own little bubble where they think they’re superstars, but they’re just on shitty day time TV.

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 21/09/2021 10:06

I don't understand how a wedding can be 'pathetic'.

But that aside, if you don't watch ITV at all then it's all easily avoidable. the wedding would have been in the Daily Mail because they like to cover that sort of thing.

AngelicaElizaAndPeggy · 21/09/2021 10:14

I don't disagree with you, OP but I've clicked yabu because I think everyone in the public eye has weird fans that live on the internet with the sole purpose of eviscerating anyone who isn't a mega fan. It seems to work the opposite way round too, Harry and Meghan haters will testify to this!

I always loved the way that bill nighy called them Antordec during Love Actually Grin

wtfisgoingon2021 · 21/09/2021 10:35

Ant and Dec were my heroes on SMTV Live when I was younger. I loved those glorious Saturday mornings watching them.

But now I'm an adult they are awful meh..

I was quite pleased actually went Ant went through his shit made them seem more human.

LampLighter414 · 21/09/2021 10:41

They are boring as are most of ITV's attempts at primetime Friday/Saturday TV for the last 10+ years.

Generallystruggling · 21/09/2021 10:55

Very true. How far could Ant and Dec go before people actually started to realise they’re massive bellends?

Generallystruggling · 21/09/2021 10:56

Tbf I think the same about Boris Johnson. Could he murder someone and still be preferable to Labour?

BoredZelda · 21/09/2021 11:00

I have never understood the attraction. Maybe back when I was a teenager in the post byka grooohve days and you felt you had grown up with them. But I’ve kept growing up and they are now just middle aged men pretending to be lads.

How the NTA can say that 20 years on they are the best we have is laughable. It’s actually quite a sad indictment of the quality of presenting that these two men are considered the best of all those out there, every damned year for 20 years. I think NTA got themselves into a position where the award just can’t go to anyone else without there being an outcry.
