To Think it's Fine to Wear DrMartens as an Older Woman?

itsnotmeitsu · 15/09/2021 21:47

I'm not going to say my age (for i.d. purposes), but I am getting on. I bought my first pair of DrMarten boots this year and now I own five pairs of Doc Marten footwear. I wear them with anything and everything, eg jeans, skirts, dresses, and it doesn't matter whether I'm dressed up or down; I wear them. I used to be so wrapped up in how I looked [thank god this was before the age of the internet], but now nobody is going to be admiring me for my looks at my age (except perhaps to say, she looks good for an elderly woman).

I had a period of knowing I was now invisible, as far as the 'male gaze' was concerned. I was middle-aged, and then I went through the menopause. Once I got over that thing of not providing what was needed from a woman by society it freed me up. If I love what I'm wearing than I'm happy in myself when I'm out and about. Far rather have people look at me and think, 'What does she look like', than sit around blending into the background with a male short haircut and clothing designed for women 'of a certain age'.

You and your DMs sound fab. I've just bought some myself (in my 50s)

esloquehay · 15/09/2021 21:56

Okay, cool...

LawnFever · 15/09/2021 21:59

I think anyone can wear anything they like tbh, I hate the concept that some things are for a certain age group, it’s so dull.

Enjoy your DMs Smile

LowbrowVictoriana · 15/09/2021 21:59

I hope the YABU people come on to explain themselves. Why shouldn't OP (or anyone else) love DMs?Hmm

CuntyMcBollocks · 15/09/2021 22:02

Wear what the heck you want. It's your life. Who cares what anyone else thinks?

There's a brilliant woman on Tiktok who is in her 50s and rocks Dr Martens on a daily basis. I just can't remember her name!

HereIfYouNeedMe · 15/09/2021 22:09

My mum is 60 and has DM's from her 30's still. Someone in their teens/20's isn't going to tell her she can't wear boots older than they are! Grin

Is it Cathi Rae? She fits the bill in any case!
NotMeNoNo · 15/09/2021 22:15

Yabu to have a dig at short hair though

Nannyamc · 15/09/2021 22:16

Please yourself not others. Comfort as you get older is a great feeling. Rock on

gogohm · 15/09/2021 22:17

Yanbu I love my doc martens!

IaltagDhubh · 15/09/2021 22:19

I had to give up on DMs at 35. They’re so heavy, my hips were in agony and I was walking like a 95 year old. I’ve been on the look out for a decent lightweight replacement ever since. Couldn’t care less what anyone else thinks of how I look, but I don’t want to be in pain for the sake of an outfit.

lazylinguist · 15/09/2021 22:19

YANBU at all, but I thought this, bought some DMs and just don't like them on myself at all. They look cool on many other people my age (50), just not on me. I've given them to dd!

Cocolapew · 15/09/2021 22:22

They're only something you stick your feet in.
Nice dig about short hair Hmm

Kanaloa · 15/09/2021 22:23

YANBU to wear what you like. If you’re comfy with a short haircut and plain clothes then that’s cool, if you want to wear doc martens that’s cool too.

eeek88 · 15/09/2021 23:06

Yabu. Doc martens are v poor quality these days and fall apart after only a few raves.

That aside, you should wear whatever you want to wear and don’t need to ask anybody’s permission.

Stayingnomorethanayearpal · 15/09/2021 23:12

I am 51 and wear DM shoes ,boots and also monkey boots ! YNBU OP

echt · 15/09/2021 23:14

I've been wearing DMs since my 20s, am now late 60s, and still do. I have quite the collection and most are UK made, and yes, they are better.

My hair is long, Kanaloa, but I expect at my age that's wrong too.

OP, you don't need anyone's permission.

RicherThanYew · 15/09/2021 23:18

You can wear whatever the fuck you want. Personally I want kitten heel fluffy mules but I'm a size 9 and it's a nightmare to find them. I'd love some tartan DMs for every day use.

Theythinkitsalloveritisnow · 15/09/2021 23:19

Yadnu! I'm nearly 50 and Ive still got the DMs that I bought in sixth form Wine Brew

Try Fly Boots. They are comfier than feet! Love them.

My teen daughter wears my vintage 80s DMs and my Mum wears her Chelsea Boot DMs in her 70s.

Wear whatever you please. The sad truth is no one really cares, they're too busy worrying about what people think of them to worry about what you're wearing.

Fraine · 15/09/2021 23:24

YANBU to wear them! They’re not my thing. Mine is wearing socks with pretty sandals! Do I care what people think? Do I fuck!

XenoBitch · 15/09/2021 23:26

I am in my 40s and love DMs. I also wear New Rocks Smile
I enjoy wearing them and that is all that counts. Everyone else and their opinions can fuck off.

Badabingbadabum · 15/09/2021 23:26

Yanbu, wear what you want. And also they are ageless!
