To Think it's Fine to Wear DrMartens as an Older Woman?

itsnotmeitsu · 15/09/2021 21:47

I'm not going to say my age (for i.d. purposes), but I am getting on. I bought my first pair of DrMarten boots this year and now I own five pairs of Doc Marten footwear. I wear them with anything and everything, eg jeans, skirts, dresses, and it doesn't matter whether I'm dressed up or down; I wear them. I used to be so wrapped up in how I looked [thank god this was before the age of the internet], but now nobody is going to be admiring me for my looks at my age (except perhaps to say, she looks good for an elderly woman).

I had a period of knowing I was now invisible, as far as the 'male gaze' was concerned. I was middle-aged, and then I went through the menopause. Once I got over that thing of not providing what was needed from a woman by society it freed me up. If I love what I'm wearing than I'm happy in myself when I'm out and about. Far rather have people look at me and think, 'What does she look like', than sit around blending into the background with a male short haircut and clothing designed for women 'of a certain age'.

I wish I hadn't grown out of my last pair (only 1 size, damn you feet!) because I can't bring myself to.spend that much on a pair nowadays Grin

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 16/09/2021 16:31

Yes, yes, and thrice yes!

Rock your DMs, OP. I've got some and I'm 47.

Bagelsandbrie · 16/09/2021 16:36

I genuinely don’t notice what people wear. I have no interest whatsoever in clothes or fashion. My Mum was always really worried about clothes / her appearance / what people thought and she could never understand or believe that lots of people- like me!- just don’t care or notice.

Wear what you like…! Grin

GeminiRising · 16/09/2021 16:57

Just bought a pair of DMs in my 50's - last had a pair as a teenager that I wore out.

Bloody love them.

Who cares what anyone else thinks?

KaycePollard · 16/09/2021 17:30

You go for it @itsnotmeitsu I’m in my early 60s and less and less concerned about what other people think. It’s hugely liberating.

I think I’m lucky in that I’ve always been objectively pretty plain. People who know me disagree but that’s because I have energy and a sort of charm in my interactions. This gives me a certain “attractiveness” but it’s definitely not my actual face or body!!!

If your comfortable and feel good then you will communicate that good feeling to those around you.

Of course I think it’s important to smell nice, have clean hair and clothes and dress appropriately for whatever I’m doing - for me that includes not showing too much wobbly flesh Grin

Antinerak · 16/09/2021 19:13

It's sad you have to tear other women down to build yourself up. Maybe get some help with that.

Sagaz · 16/09/2021 19:16

other people wont give your look much analysis at all.

blissfulllife · 16/09/2021 19:19

50 here. Latest purchase. Never did give a toss what anyone thinks of what I wear.

MaryHadALittleDramHicHic · 16/09/2021 19:20

It wouldn't occur to me to care about what people think about what I wear
I'm sure most people don't give it a second thought

PaperMonster · 16/09/2021 19:22

In my 50s. I wear DMs - have been doing so since my teens. I don’t care what anyone thinks.

Boilingicicle · 16/09/2021 19:28

Im in my 60s. I’d love some docs but they’re too heavy and uncomfy for my messed up joints. I’d have multiple pairs if I could . I love the chunky sandals and the classic boots. They look good on everyone from toddler upwards imo. I watch a YouTube channel by KarenBritChick. She has an ongoing series called Where did. you get that where she stops people in New York and gets them to talk about what they’re wearing. It is so heartening to see people of all ages and sizes putting together outfits they feel good in and that represents their style. Docs feature a lot.

prudencepuffin · 16/09/2021 19:32

Ruby Shoesday, and Josef Seibel does nice slightly lighter boots.

ShinyMe · 16/09/2021 19:33

I'm 49 and have 6 pairs, including gold glitter ones and red glitter platform sandals. I love them.

Why on earth would it not be ok to wear them? Did anyone suggest it wasn't ok?

entropynow · 16/09/2021 19:36

@NotMeNoNo

Yabu to have a dig at short hair though
Not seeing a dig. I have short hair , but I know what OP means about a "male short hair" cut.
RiotAtTheRodeo · 16/09/2021 19:42

Well there's an implied dig in that she says women who have a 'male short haircut' blend into the background. Not like her in her shocking (totally mainstream) boots.

MuddlingAlong1234 · 16/09/2021 20:04

Doc Martens should be worn at any age in my opinion but I’m a Doc fiend. And so is my mum. What’s not to love once they’ve been worn in they are so comfy and sensible yet funky and cool.
Rock Your DM’s!!!!! ♥️♥️

StoneofDestiny · 16/09/2021 20:24

Wear what you like apart from PJ's to the supermarket

malificent7 · 16/09/2021 20:29

Im in my 40s and own some...i will insist to get buried in them.

malificent7 · 16/09/2021 20:30

I think having a short haircit is a true act of female rebellion nowadays!

RunnerDown · 16/09/2021 20:33

I think you should wear what you like. But don’t patronise other older women who have different preferences.
I’m older but I wouldn’t wear dms. I’m confident enough to wear the clothes I like - whether they blend into the background or not. I like my hair short . I don’t like being judged by other women who think they are more “edgy” than me. Life is too short for that

camelfinger · 16/09/2021 20:36

I doubt anyone notices. If anything, they are probably worn more often by the older generations as they can afford them!

itsnotmeitsu · 16/09/2021 22:28

Sorry if I've offended with the 'male' short haircut. I have often had a short hairstyle. I love short hair if it works for someone. It was just that I was sitting in a pub last week and saw so many 'older' women with the self-same hair style that ages them.
