To Think it's Fine to Wear DrMartens as an Older Woman?

I'm not going to say my age (for i.d. purposes), but I am getting on. I bought my first pair of DrMarten boots this year and now I own five pairs of Doc Marten footwear. I wear them with anything and everything, eg jeans, skirts, dresses, and it doesn't matter whether I'm dressed up or down; I wear them. I used to be so wrapped up in how I looked [thank god this was before the age of the internet], but now nobody is going to be admiring me for my looks at my age (except perhaps to say, she looks good for an elderly woman).

I had a period of knowing I was now invisible, as far as the 'male gaze' was concerned. I was middle-aged, and then I went through the menopause. Once I got over that thing of not providing what was needed from a woman by society it freed me up. If I love what I'm wearing than I'm happy in myself when I'm out and about. Far rather have people look at me and think, 'What does she look like', than sit around blending into the background with a male short haircut and clothing designed for women 'of a certain age'.

Wear whatever you like. I've been wearing docs since I was about 15 and I'm soon to be 50.
I can't imagine ever parting with them but will confess to getting slightly annoyed by how "trendy" they are just now. It's made them very expensive.
I do get the occasional "are you ever going to stop dressing like a student" comment from DH though and he particularly enjoyed my discovery of doc marten sandals a few years ago which means I wear them all year round 🤣

I wear DM's 💕

@WeeWeeWeeeeeeeee I've been looking at heavenly boots, what's the sizing like?

I wish I could try some without the faff of returning. Wide calf and high instep makes me fussy with boots.

Never found DMs boots or shoes comfy, loved my new rocks but sadly too wide of calf now.

I’m 47 and have loads of them. I still have and wear the first pair I ever had from when I was 14. Please don’t worry what other people think

londonrach · 17/10/2021 05:29

The beauty of getting older is you can do whatever you want ..you wear the DM they just shoes. Personally I never understood why people like them but I bet I wear things people don't understand why I like. Your taste and your shoes so just wear them.... No one cares what you wear.

I am going to a work conference on Monday, for the evening event Monday night, I shall be wearing a Monsoon velvet tunic, velvet leggings and pink glitter boots similar to these, I do have short hair but it's pink, I am 66

YANBU at all to enjoy stompy boots and freedom from stereotyped expectations of gender presentation, but you’ve got a way to go on that journey given your comments about short hair, as other posters have also pointed out.

Do you really care at your age what others think?. I'm in my 50s and couldn't give a flying duck...
I don't like wearing dms as they kill my feet, but great if you can. I am looking at getting some dm sandals though.

IfImLyingImDying · 17/10/2021 09:53

Repeat after me a few 100 times every day:

I can wear anything I like.
If I feel good that’s good enough for me.
Nobody else’s opinion matters.
I can wear anything I like.

billy1966 · 17/10/2021 10:36

Why on earth not?

I have a pair for years and have started to wear them again as they are so comfortable.

It honestly wouldn't occur to me not to.

ZenNudist · 17/10/2021 10:43

Strange attitude. You can pretty much wear what you like. There isn't a standard issue twinset and pearlsfor women of a certain age!

Me too. There are more comfortable versions in the same sort of style though. These are from Schuh and their own brand. They are much softer and comfortable.

@Oldsu I’ve been wearing just those ones today!! (52)

Siriisatwat · 17/10/2021 18:22

Like most people on this earth, I am far too preoccupied with my own problems to even notice what other people wear.

And If I do notice, I don’t care.

So that’s how I assume most people are, and I wear what I like.
