To Think it's Fine to Wear DrMartens as an Older Woman?

itsnotmeitsu · 15/09/2021 21:47

I'm not going to say my age (for i.d. purposes), but I am getting on. I bought my first pair of DrMarten boots this year and now I own five pairs of Doc Marten footwear. I wear them with anything and everything, eg jeans, skirts, dresses, and it doesn't matter whether I'm dressed up or down; I wear them. I used to be so wrapped up in how I looked [thank god this was before the age of the internet], but now nobody is going to be admiring me for my looks at my age (except perhaps to say, she looks good for an elderly woman).

I had a period of knowing I was now invisible, as far as the 'male gaze' was concerned. I was middle-aged, and then I went through the menopause. Once I got over that thing of not providing what was needed from a woman by society it freed me up. If I love what I'm wearing than I'm happy in myself when I'm out and about. Far rather have people look at me and think, 'What does she look like', than sit around blending into the background with a male short haircut and clothing designed for women 'of a certain age'.

I'm nearly 53 I know all about the cutting the your hair as you get older nonsense. But it's also nonsense to judge women who do want short hair.
Anyone I know has the haircut they do because they like it, not because they ascribe to a set of rules some journalist made up.

peaceanddove · 17/09/2021 09:22

I'm 51 and just bought some black, DM Chelsea boots. Love them.

the80sweregreat · 17/09/2021 09:35

My hair has a wave in it and is rubbish short plus slightly longer hair is easier to up keep too
I can tie it back and it keeps the wave in check.
It's fighting off the gray hairs I find harder.

Ellarain · 17/09/2021 09:43

I got my first pair from DH for Christmas last year (39).My DM is 60 and she wears her Dr Martens with style.

OhGiveUp · 17/09/2021 09:47

I'll add that my hair has always been short, since I begged my mum to have my hair cut short when I was nine.
Since I was 17, It's been a skinhead. I'm now pushing sixty.
It reflects my taste in music.
I'll probably go to my grave with my Doc's on my feet.
I don't give a shiny one what anyone thinks, why should I?
A couple of years ago, I saw a woman who was certainly looking at the wrong side of 80, she was dressed in black leather trousers, a boob tube and heels. My first thought was ' good on you ' and why the hell not, she clearly didn't care what anyone thought of her and why should she. I bet she's a riot on the lash, unlike the middle aged women who wear oh so sensible clothes and hairdo's, who constantly pass their pursed lipped judgement on everyone else's appearance while wondering how to make that rod up their arse comfortable.

SteviePicks · 17/09/2021 09:47

My MIL wears a pair (in her 50's) and absolutely rocks them!

the80sweregreat · 17/09/2021 11:09

Many of my friends wear t shirts with their favorite rock band on or leather trousers etc a few are pushing against the more traditional 'Boden ' look.
I couldn't get away with alternative though, it's not me to be honest , but I admire women who clearly dress for themselves and what they like to wear.

ADreadedSunnyDay · 17/09/2021 11:16

Of course. Why even ask? If you can't wear what you want now, when will you ever be able to?

FinallyHere · 17/09/2021 11:35

Being able to do exactly whatever you want to do, being responsible for your own choices is the good part of being an adult, as opposed to utility bills and taxes.

Honestly, would you really abide by whatever a bunch of strangers in the interest decided you should wear, rather than make your own decisions?

Have you read the Handmaiden's Tale?

leiaskye · 17/09/2021 11:40

Completely agree!

I bought my first pair of Dr Martens at Xmas last year. I turned 50 this year.

I love them. So comfortable, waterproof & go with everything!

My teenage daughters don’t care about me wearing them, I couldn’t give a rats arse about what anyone else thinks!

bozzabollix · 18/09/2021 09:08

She sounds absolutely brilliant, I’d love to go on the lash with her.

As soon as you start adhering the rules of ageing then you’re done for. Sod that shit.

For the poster who said that floaty dresses and DMs are ridiculous, I wore my DM Chelsea boots with a maxi dress the other day. Never have had so many compliments on a school run. What should I have worn the dress with?

Outbutnotoutout · 18/09/2021 09:15

I bought my first pair of Doc Martins aged 50, before that I would never have been able to spend £140 on footwear.

A Divorce later and they are mine

Go for it

UnusuallyUsual · 18/09/2021 09:28

@IwaltagDhubh I know exactly what you mean about them being heavy and hurting your hips... I brought a pair of grypon quads recently, I got them home and wore them about the house and realise I couldn't walk in them... I took them back and brought a lighter pair

Proudboomer · 18/09/2021 10:17

That statement is just as judgemental as the purse lipped brigade that you are judging.

it is human nature to judge but pretending that just because you wear dms and have a crop somehow makes you special and non judgemental is bull crap.

PurpleDaisies · 16/10/2021 21:22

Do you live in some sort of alternate universe where time passes differently? On another thread you said you were 39 last year…

PurpleDaisies · 16/10/2021 21:23

Wrong thread

Cherrysoup · 16/10/2021 22:52

I rarely wear anything else (early 50s). Couldn’t give a shit what anyone says, although 2 people have told me their dds would love them-they’re 16 and 11.

PfizerMinnelli · 16/10/2021 23:25

@RicherThanYew

You can wear whatever the fuck you want. Personally I want kitten heel fluffy mules but I'm a size 9 and it's a nightmare to find them. I'd love some tartan DMs for every day use.
Hey @RicherThanYew, these any good? www.etsy.com/uk/listing/995670800/red-tartan-vegan-leather-combat-boots?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=vegan+tartan+boots&ref=sr_gallery-1-1&organic_search_click=1
PfizerMinnelli · 16/10/2021 23:27

Lots of big DM type boots on Etsy and more. I''m an old lady with big feet and live in this sort of thing. Being vegan is a plus for me. OP, you wear your DMs and enjoy them

Sunshinealligator · 16/10/2021 23:36

Wear whatever you like!
I was in DM a few months back with DD, she's a bit of a collector, and she was trying on a few pairs, a lady around my age came in with her mother who must've been 60+ and she was talking to her about this boot and that boot. She tried some on, seemed worried about them being too youthful but eventually bought them, she was beaming in the queue to pay.

One of the loveliest things I've seen in years (I am pregnant so don't know if it was just a weird emotional thing because of that) but I've thought about that lady a few times. I hope she's loving the DMs especially with the colder weather on the way.

Onlyfoolsandhorseswork · 17/10/2021 00:03

I lived in mine aged 16-19
My mate, who’d just found out she was going to be a granny for the first time aged 55 bought a cherry red pair (and rocked them)
There’s no age limit on anything-it would be bloody boring if there was

Rock them with confidence

DerAlteMann · 17/10/2021 00:58

I know several women who wear Doc Martens. None is under State Pension Age.

gofg · 17/10/2021 01:40

I've never found DMs particularly comfortable, but I love them on other people - go for it. I'm a great believer in wearing whatever you like, whatever your age. YABU for making the comment about short hair and other women's clothes however!

gofg · 17/10/2021 01:56

It's not about hair being short; it's why don't more older women have long hair?

Presumably if they wanted long hair they would have long hair? Long hair doesn't make a woman any more interesting or fun than short hair. I've had short hair for decades, once it gets to a certain length (which is still pretty short) it drives me mad. Incidentally, I find that the shorter it is the more freeing it is, but I don't judge any woman for whatever way she wears her hair, or whatever clothes she wants to wear. Too many who like to think of themselves as 'edgy' or 'cool' pass judgement on those of a more conservative nature - neither is wrong nor right, women should be free to dress as they want, and if they are happy being conservative good on them.

GoddessofWealthandGoodFortune · 17/10/2021 02:40

I am 59 and have quite a few pairs in different colours and styles.

I love them!

I am a high school teacher with a PhD, and my students call me The Doc with Docs!

Wear what you want when you want.
