‘Nice’ Things That Aren’t Actually

Just a random musing.

Breakfast in bed- lovely idea, reality is you need to get up for a wee and then a tray is plonked on your lap, and groggy from sleep you are supposed to exclaim in delight over bits of pastry flaking into your sheets and slopping coffee down yourself and trying to subtly get the sluggy bits of fat off the bacon because you usually just get medallions.

Relaxing massage- I went the other day and I kept thinking ‘I’ll switch off and enjoy it in a minute’ but just kept thinking about whether to get the tube or the bus home and if there are oven chips in the freezer or not or if I watered my peace lily last week and if not it’s probably died. Then it was finished and it cost me £80.

Anyone got anything they can add to things that sound so nice as an idea but in reality are just not really?

Work social events and team- building- away- days. I'd rather work a 12 hour shift thanks

Boyfriends and partners

crummyusername · 15/09/2021 22:44

I love a bunch of flowers. Well if it’s a nice one. Sadly don’t get them very often.

Agree with so many other things on this thread. Not read all the posts but has anyone mentioned expensive skin care products? I got some as a gift, I can’t be arsed to use them as I am too lazy with all the faff of layering different types of creams so they just sit on the shelf making me feel guilty.

crummyusername · 15/09/2021 22:45

Oh and iced coffee. Just make me a proper strong HOT coffee thanks.

Wantosleep39 · 15/09/2021 22:46

Wedding fruit cake.
It’s not a fruit cake, it’s a sponge cake with raisins in. Way too sweet. Just terrible to eat

Suesheri · 15/09/2021 22:48

Half a day off on a lovely sunny day, so drinking at lunchtime? Then coming home, slightly pissed and crashing out on the sofa for an hour, waking up with a sore head, having dribbled enough saliva out the side of my mouth to soak a double mattress and feeling like shit for the rest of the night.

goingtotown · 15/09/2021 22:51

All inclusive holidays.

Wow, lighten up girls, thinking a bit of relaxing, chilling, taking things as they come & taking “me” time is needed here!

Spa/massage - being pampered & enjoying spa facilities, what’s not to love!

Camping/picnic/bbq/eating outside - only a hassle if you make it a hassle!! Just enjoy the moment!!

Small kids outings - chill & enjoy, they’re only young once! Loved all our trips with our daughter and when I was pregnant I took my 4 childminding children on a day trip to Glasgow from Edinburgh on the train, one of the best days of my life!!

Family walks - don’t happen often enough, love when they do! Such fond memories of childhood family walks!!

Guests - just enjoy their company & the fact they want to stay with you! Ditto the other way for being a house guest!!

Wine. Apart from a really cheap fizzy rose I get from Sainsbo's I've never found one I really like, I'd rather have a gin or a beer.

Pretty party cakes, they all taste of sugar and lies! (My friend makes a mean carrot cake though. Grin )
Sex. I like the idea, the execution leaves a lot to be desired though.

cadburyegg · 15/09/2021 23:08

Weekends. My kids are much harder work than my job.

flibberyjibbery8 · 15/09/2021 23:09

Picnics. Wasps, things trying to fly away in the wind, children distracted by environment so dont want to eat much, food doesnt taste as good. Blurgh

Bertiebiscuit · 15/09/2021 23:10

Parties - utterly pointless usually, good booze goes straight away, food always terrible and messed up anyway, and I always ended up trying to escape from boring men, always have to wait ages to get in the bathroom - what are y'all doing in there? - can't wait to get home

Overtired201984 · 15/09/2021 23:13

@Betty000
No way I love the house to myself every now and then , the time flies I’m like oh your. Ask already ….. 5 hours later 🤣

I can’t believe so many people saying naps , I literally live for naps (maybe that’s why I don’t sleep at night very well hmmm)

Baking with kids.
I always have such high hopes as I love to bake but my 6 year old just wants to throw flour everywhere "like snow" and lick everything.
Phobiaphobic · 15/09/2021 23:19

Board games. More like bored games.

Staffy1 · 15/09/2021 23:43

Creme eggs, yuck.
Going to the hairdressers, hate the small talk or the awkward silence.
Baths, just tedious necessities.

Staffy1 · 15/09/2021 23:53

Also scented candles and wine.

JudgeJ · 15/09/2021 23:56

@IntermittentParps

So far I have been thoroughly dissapointed by wagon wheels, which have shrunk, are now made from two disks of reconstituted sawdust, a slick of something that reminds me of artificially sweetened PVA glue, and something alleged to be jam that has never seen fruit, covered in a film of what appears to be the scrapings from a dried tin of brown paint. I thought they were always like that Grin I always loved them, don't get me wrong.
Regarding our childhood favoutie foods deteriorating I think it's probably more a case of our tastes have become more refined! Remember, many of us ate mud and sucked coal!
groovergirl · 16/09/2021 01:11

@WheelieBinPrincess, congratulations on your baby! Smile Flowers Star Now, that's a "nice thing" that really is nice.

New Year's Eve parties when I was a young adult. Noisy, rough, full of drunks and strictly no dancing in case you knocked someone's drink.
Milk chocolate. Sweet and greasy and gave me spots the next day.
Those massages where they waste half the time putting hot stones on you.
Exotic resort holidays. Crazy boring and expensive, but XH and his DPs loved them. I have fair skin and ADHD; I can't sit dutifully on a beach for a week!

Darlingx · 16/09/2021 03:54

Bunches of cut flowers in Cellophane. Controversial I know but it’s going to rot in the plastic . The cellophane outlives the bloom and its not pretty seeing plastic full of dead matter tethered. In fact why is everything wrapped in single use plastic still these days. When you see it enmasse I just think a posy out of plastic would look more like the gesture of what it was in the first place. Brown paper if it’s a gift ending up in a vase or an unwrapped posy if it’s for being left somewhere.
Supermarkets need to find a solution to this I suppose.

sashh · 16/09/2021 04:20

I'm not sure you are doing baths properly, showers are for washing and baths for relaxing and / soaking.

You need a book, some music and ideally a glass of wine and candles.
