Inspired/copied/due to lack of my own ideas

What phrases/come backs/irritating things do people say on MN?

OP posts:
Walkingtheplank · 07/09/2021 23:48

'think'.

When someone wont give all the details and wants us to 'think' instead,
E.g. "He has a royal sounding name, think Harry, William, but not that."
Or "He drove an SUV, think Audi Q5 or Nissan Quashqai, but not one of those."

I dont want to "think", just tell me the story!

“I was left crying at shaking.”

Usually after the most minor confrontation, eg the checkout at Aldo was too fast, or someone asked the OP to move her bag from a train seat so someone else could sit. CRYING AND SHAKING.

ReginaaPhalange · 07/09/2021 23:58

"Are you the OW?"

NantesElephant · 08/09/2021 00:04

Miffed

A close second is ‘I had a little cry.’ It just sounds so pathetic and pitiful.

Boils my piss, boils my piss.

CouldIhaveaword · 08/09/2021 00:53

'Mental health issues' used by OPs, particularly in a dripfeed, to deflect criticism and justify any action.

It's a shame, I'm sure the problems of genuine sufferers are lost in the crowd.

Anystarinthesky · 08/09/2021 01:24

'end of'

'giving an un-mumsnetty hug'

choli · 08/09/2021 02:24

"I have mental health". Not mental health issues, just mental.

Saoirse82 · 08/09/2021 03:09

There's lots, but one that springs to mind is 'You sound unhinged'. This one pisses me off more than any other, not less because it doesn't matter what the thread is about, there's always a few twats calling the OP unhinged even if they've asked for recommendations for a family day out Confused

SpidersAreShitheads · 08/09/2021 04:14

This is the complete opposite of what you asked about - but on a thread today someone said "tell him to shit off" and it really made me laugh.

I don't even know why it was so funny, but I actually laughed out loud at it. Even now, thinking about it again, it's making me smirk.

At the opposite end of the scale, while I appreciate the words narcissist and gaslighting can be important, they're thrown around so lightly that they've ceased to have any real meaning. So many people accuse others of being a narc or gaslighting them when actually they've just had a simple disagreement, nothing more. It's actually quite insulting to others who have genuinely had to deal with that kind of serious behaviour.

Anyway, enough of that. Let's get back to shit off...... 😅

TemptedToSleepInTheShed · 08/09/2021 04:26

Thank you @SpidersAreShitheads , I’m using that.

I hate “gifted” when it’s used as “my DH gifted me a bracelet” “my parents want to gift me a house”

UnsuitableHat · 08/09/2021 06:06

‘Are you very young, OP?’

hopeishere · 08/09/2021 06:36

Not a phrase but I hate it when the second poster on the thread uses the quote function to quote the whole opening post!!! It's right there ffs no need to quote it.

TourneeDuChatNoir · 08/09/2021 06:45

A post beginning with "meh" or "ugh", to demonstrate that poster's supreme indifference to the matter at hand, although they still cared enough to add their tuppence worth.

Spyro1234 · 08/09/2021 06:45

"this too shall pass"

Literally so unhelpful

SeoultoSeoul · 08/09/2021 07:31

Makes my teeth itch.
Dippy eggs.
Threads that become tedious very quickly eg the leaving washing out at night thread.

SeoultoSeoul · 08/09/2021 07:32

Bore off

JayAlfredPrufrock · 08/09/2021 07:40

So what is it you like about MN?

Namechangedforthreadbackafter · 08/09/2021 07:59

Wow that is irritating. Why don't people just say.

Hot choc
Ducks in a row

DrSbaitso · 08/09/2021 08:14

Everyone hates "ducks in a row", but I don't mind it. I like ducks.

The disapproving Hmm face is annoying.

burritofan · 08/09/2021 08:39

The disapproving Hmm face is annoying.
I hate it less than the Confused face, which makes me want to reach into the screen and slap its stupid chops. Mostly when it’s deployed by someone not remotely confused or boggled, but who just wants to deliberately misunderstand something or selectively quote from you, to show how remarkably clever they are.

It boils my teeth and makes my piss itch.

x2boys · 08/09/2021 08:46

@Kanaloa

Also it makes me cringe when people pretend they don’t understand an entire post because one word was incorrectly used/misspelled, although the meaning of the post is very clear contextually from other information.

So the post will say something like ‘I was gifted a car by my mum and now want to sell it, but I’m afraid it will hurt mum’s feelings’ and the first reply will be ‘you were GIFTED a car? What does that mean? Did you give someone the car? Is the car model called ‘gifted? I don’t understand.’

Yes that, s irritating, but i do like it when a poster smugly picks apart an Op, s Grammar or spelling and then proceeds to make a Grammatical or spelling error themselves 🤣
DrSbaitso · 08/09/2021 08:51

I never normally pick apart spelling, grammar or autocorrect fails, but I will if it's relevant. The other day, someone took exception to my statement that "Karen" is just the current go-to misogynistic insult for stupid people, and squared up to me telling me she could outdo me any day in wordsmithing. Then proceeded to dump a garbled shitpost in which it appeared her autocorrect itself was drunk. Come on, what was I supposed to do?
