Cost at moment to charge an Electric car overnight for 1 year us in excess of 3k. News today says fuel prices are going to hike. And, what happens to all the used electric batteries. Landfill? Aibu to love and want to keep my 'dirty diesel'? Ironically, diesel was supposed to be the ' cleaner fuel'.

@selkiesarereal I apologise if you feel that I've attacked you I didn't mean to do that. I just think that there is a lot of misinformation about evs and it seemed pretty radical what you wrote in your first post. To someone who knew nothing about any of it, it would put you off, like the ops post with it costing thousands a year to run an ev!
I am obviously an ev supporter but I totally agree they have their faults and they are definitely not for everyone. I just think if people that hate the idea of them tried them they would be converted, they're amazing to drive and it's really not as much of a faff as you'd think.
@webuiltthiscityonsausageroll I don't think they can tow just yet? We actually sold our folding camper when we got my latest ev because of it. They should be able to pull them in theory but there is some technical reason that they can't that I will not pretend that I know 😂. My brother is a hgv driver and works for a company that builds fully electric ones. He has to test drive them over and over to work out their faults before they can go into production. There are already electric bin wagons in use!

I agree with PP that cobalt extraction is concerning, (but a lot of drilling for oil is pretty dubious too), and re: getting rid of batteries at end of life, and source of electricity. They’re not perfect. But they’re better (environmentally) than the alternatives available.
If you have to run a car, then waiting to your current vehicle has reached the end of its life and replacing with a long-lived small EV is better (environmentally) than a heavy SUV.

Thanks for the info re towing - that would be a massive concern for us, as it's the difference between being able to afford to go away in the school holidays and not having the ability to. I do hope they get something sorted in plenty of time before EVs are all there is, and don't destroy the whole concept of caravanning completely!

Sorry for messing with your head Grin Grin Grin

I wonder if anyone has thought about how our illustrious government plans to replace the 30 billion a year they get from fuel tax once we have all been forced into our electric cars.

discombobulatedonion · 23/09/2021 18:44

It doesn’t cost anywhere near £3k. It was costing us no more than £30 a month, but that was with travelling a 200 mile round trip once a month. Realistically it’s about £20 a month.
