Cost at moment to charge an Electric car overnight for 1 year us in excess of 3k. News today says fuel prices are going to hike. And, what happens to all the used electric batteries. Landfill? Aibu to love and want to keep my 'dirty diesel'? Ironically, diesel was supposed to be the ' cleaner fuel'.

Same thoughts. My diesel has zero road tax because of emissions levels. £3k a year is £57 a week. That’s more than I put in my car each week and how far would that get you?

Halfaham · 03/09/2021 20:29

Why is it so expensive? Is that the cost of the electricity?

TheVolturi · 03/09/2021 20:31

I have an ev and it costs nothing like 3k a year 🙄 unless maybe I was driving from Land's End to John o Groats as my daily commute!

PeonyTime · 03/09/2021 20:35

Where have you got your data from?
I thought it was more like £20 (in multiple charges) to get around 400 miles, vs £40 of fuel for a similar distance.

TheVolturi · 03/09/2021 20:37

To put in into perspective, I previously had a diesel that was costing me 30 a week in fuel. My ev does 170 miles to a charge and I charge it no more than once a week, the cost per charge at home is approx £5. There are also free chargers all over, not rapid but will give you an extra 20 miles in a couple of hours while shopping etc.

beinglikedisoverrated · 03/09/2021 20:48

I got the information from ( MG website)

COST TO CHARGE AN ELECTRIC CAR AT HOME
Charging your vehicle at home is the easiest and most cost-effective way to power your vehicle. You can charge overnight at a reduced rate and wake up with a full battery, ready to go. Charging an electric vehicle at home costs around £8.40 for a 60kWh vehicle, according to data supplied by Pod Point. This will provide approximately 200 miles of range, depending on your vehicle.

I average 150 ish miles a week

OP posts:
TheVolturi · 03/09/2021 20:58

So on the data you've provided, the £8.40 would give you 200 miles ish, you only do 150 a week, so could charge once a week like I do, £8.40 x 52 weeks = £436???

dworky · 03/09/2021 20:59

Where on earth did you get that figure? It's cheaper to charge an EV than it is to use to petrol/diesel.
The expense of running EV is battery cost/renewal.

beinglikedisoverrated · 03/09/2021 20:59

EV batteries are larger and heavier than those in regular cars and are made up of several hundred individual lithium-ion cells, all of which need dismantling. They contain hazardous materials, and have an inconvenient tendency to explode if disassembled incorrectly.

"Currently, globally, it's very hard to get detailed figures for what percentage of lithium-ion batteries are recycled, but the value everyone quotes is about 5%," says Dr Anderson. "In some parts of the world it's considerably less."

I've just explained.

£8.40 x 52 weeks = £436???

I'm guessing you need to charge it up more than once a week...........

Hence why I worked it out per DAY

Why have you guessed that?
TheVolturi · 03/09/2021 21:04

It's posts like your op that fuel hatred and fear of evs, people read your post and don't read any further and think fucking hell! Does it cost that much! Then they tell their mates down the pub and so on. It's just totally false information. It's far far cheaper to run an ev, and easier especially if you don't do big mileage.

RockaLock · 03/09/2021 21:06

You don't need to charge an ev every day. You only charge it when the battery gets low, just as you wouldn't visit a petrol station every day to top up on fuel - you'd only go and fill up when the tank is nearly empty.

Well, you could plug it in every day to charge, but if you'd only done say 20 miles that day, it would only cost about 84p to charge the battery up to 100%.

Volturi's maths is right.

By your own statement, you do around 150 miles per week and a nights charge does 200 miles, so why would you need to charge more then once per week?!
TheVolturi · 03/09/2021 21:07

You charge it for the miles you use! Only use 150 miles so only charge once! It doesn't use any charge when not being actually driven! 🤦🏻‍♀️

DonnaDonna01 · 03/09/2021 21:08

@beinglikedisoverrated you’ve lost me on the cost to charge an electric car! If it’s £8.40 for 200 miles and you do 150 a week is that not £436.80 a year?

FawnFrenchieMum · 03/09/2021 21:10

My fuel tank holds about £70 worth of diesel, I don’t empty it and refill it daily!

beinglikedisoverrated · 03/09/2021 21:12

I' didn't realize I put a week - I meant 150 ish a day - FFS

By the way - whilst you're all correcting me on my mileage, has anyone corrected me about whats going to happen to all the batteries

OP posts:
MyMummyHasGotABigBottom · 03/09/2021 21:13

We are currently considering an EV over a diesel. I’m currently £60 for a tank of diesel and do 200 miles a week just on school runs. I budget £200/month for fuel but if we do a longer trip/holiday it’s more money but from a different pot.

If you are doing 150 miles a week and the range is 200 miles, why on EARTH would you be charging every night??? It’s not like a phone!!!

Also re the batteries, it’s worth considering a different method of ownership. Batteries will be refurbished. They don’t just go into landfill. All these companies making EVs will have an ESG strategy and if they were found to be binning lithium batteries… I mean they just don’t do that now. Possibly in the past. And battery technology is improving all the time.

If you want try and convince yourself that your diesel is better for the environment then that’s your bag. But at least do your research before you post.

MyMummyHasGotABigBottom · 03/09/2021 21:14

Ok I see your correction re 150 per day. But how much does that cost you a year in fuel?? I bet it’s a shes ton more than £3k

namechange30455 · 03/09/2021 21:15

@beinglikedisoverrated

£8.40 x 52 weeks = £436???

I'm guessing you need to charge it up more than once a week...........

But you said you do 150 miles a week?

And you can do 200 miles on one charge...?

namechange30455 · 03/09/2021 21:17

Ok just seen your correction - but if you do 150 miles a day you must be spending more than £8.40 a day on fuel. I've got a pretty fuel efficient diesel car and £50 worth of fuel would only do me 600 miles ish.

Earlystartsmakemegrumpy · 03/09/2021 21:18

Why on earth have you calculated per day?! You said you average 150 miles per week so one charge at £8.40 should last at least a week. £8.40 x 52 weeks = £436.80.
You make a valid point re recycling of batteries but unfortunately it's been been lost with the £3k per year to charge an EV.
I suspect you don't care about providing an accurate figure though, and this is just an anti-ev post
