Lyse Doucet still in Kabul

I know she regularly reports from dangerous places but am I the only person to be surprised that Lyse Doucet is still in Kabul? How on Earth will she get out? She must be a target for ISIS?

I was wondering the same thing today. She’s fearless.

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 30/08/2021 22:27

I am in awe of her, she's got nerves of steel. Although her helmet today did make me laugh.

MyPatronusIsACat · 30/08/2021 22:27

Oh dear. I thought everyone was meant to be out.

Hope she's OK.

BoreOfWhabylon · 30/08/2021 22:27

Ovaries of steel, that one.

WhyOhWhyOhWhyyyy · 30/08/2021 22:28

Although the Taliban seem to want to be showing (the West at least) that they’ve changed so targeting her probably doesn’t tie in with that line.

toomuchlaundry · 30/08/2021 22:30

That helmet isn’t going to help much is it? I wouldn’t want to be there

CallMeRisley · 30/08/2021 22:30

As the OP mentioned, it is ISIS-K who have claimed responsibility for the Kabul airport strikes and not the Taliban, and they are rival groups.
pinkhousesarebest · 30/08/2021 22:34

In a few weeks time, the Taliban will be the good guys. Nightmare.

BringMeTea · 30/08/2021 22:36

Love Lyse.

Terrifying
Seeingadistance · 30/08/2021 22:36

Oh dear Lord, she’s still there! I had assumed she would be among the last to leave, but she’s still there.

Oh my!

FATEdestiny · 30/08/2021 22:37

Ive been thinking the same for the last few days. I assumed she would come out with the military. But she's still there.

I hope she's well hidden, I can't imagine who must be protecting her (and the crew). She's at such a risk.

stairway · 30/08/2021 22:40

If only Dominic Raab has her courage and conviction.

WhyOhWhyOhWhyyyy · 30/08/2021 22:41

@CallMeRisley oh yes, didn’t read the OP properly.

I hope she gets herself out of there soon, horrifying to think of all the Afghan journalists who won’t be able to do the same.

Darkchocolateandcoffee · 30/08/2021 22:44

I was also wondering this. Terrifying.

everythingthelighttouches · 30/08/2021 22:50

But how is she going to get out? Kabul airport is now unmanned, there is no air traffic control. Sorry, it’s just something I don’t know anything about at all so I can’t imagine how it is going to be done.

Selkiesarereal · 30/08/2021 22:52

She is a fantastic journalist and one of the few I actually pay attention to when reporting, I do hope that she manages to get to safety.

GU24Mum · 30/08/2021 22:53

Unless she's had cast iron behind the scenes assurances, it does seem risky (putting it mildly) that she's still there. What about Secunder Kermani - is he there too?

QueenPeary · 30/08/2021 22:54

I was also worrying about her over the last few days. But I thought maybe the Taliban see some journalists as useful and part of their PR - but I hope she will be ok. What a star. Keep safe Lyse.

HemanOrSheRa · 30/08/2021 22:55

She was in Kabul 1988/89 to cover the Soviet withdrawal. There's a NewStatesman article that hints at her staying in Kabul this time.

JaniceBattersby · 30/08/2021 22:57

She’ll get out the same way shes been getting in and out of countries for years. Smuggled over the border by friends.

She’s completely fearless. What an incredible woman, and kudos to the Beeb for supporting her continued presence there. There aren’t many other broadcasters who have allowed their journos to stay there. This is such an important part of the story to cover.

TokyoSushi · 30/08/2021 22:58

She was reporting from Dubai about a week/10 days ago and I thought oh thank goodness, she's out.

So she's actually gone in, knowing how horrific it is, she's incredible and incredibly brave.

MintyCedric · 30/08/2021 23:00

Amazing.

If only we heard more about journalists of her calibre and less of the untrained wannabes spouting crap in social media these days.

Chamonixshoopshoop · 30/08/2021 23:02

I’m glad someone has started a thread on this, I thought the exact same thing. What a woman, everyone running away but she wants to report the truth.

Cyrsethatballoon · 30/08/2021 23:04

Me too! Been so worried about her, she's just incredible absolutely incredible.
