Lyse Doucet still in Kabul

I know she regularly reports from dangerous places but am I the only person to be surprised that Lyse Doucet is still in Kabul? How on Earth will she get out? She must be a target for ISIS?

I think she lives there, and still want's to be there, as she is a dedicated reporter, and will keep doing her job, no matter what., and for as long as possible. She obviously has the measure of what could happen at any time.

cherish123 · 01/09/2021 17:55

Oh no. I like her. Hope she is okay.

Maggiejardine · 01/09/2021 18:04

I agree, she is one brave woman. I used to think the same of Orla Guerin and years ago Kate Adie, reporting from the most dangerous places on earth. I’m sure that she has a route out though, although it would not be made known to the public. The BBC would not risk her life surely

TootsPye · 01/09/2021 18:04

She's a brilliant journalist and compelling correspondent. I really like her accent. Like someone said up thread, I think she's been posted in Kabul for years.

phishy · 01/09/2021 18:09

@RedToothBrush

Really unfair to poster who just copied from wiki in good faith simply not realising.

All I said to the poster is ‘Miꞌkmaq you mean?’, which is neither rude nor ‘snotty’. If people get pissed off at a legitimate correction, then that’s on them. It’s important to get these things right.

Trethew · 01/09/2021 18:31

Don’t forget Marie Colvin. Fearless and dedicated. She was experienced, had contacts, knew her way round a war zone etc but still got blown up in Syria. Massive respect for them both

NorthLodgeAvenue · 01/09/2021 18:32

Always regarded her very highly.

Ellen2shoes · 01/09/2021 18:38

It’s astonishing how many of these outstanding war reporters are women. I’m utterly in awe and have all fingers crossed that she will be safe. Also a worshipper of Marie Colvin. There’s a brilliant biography by Lindsay Hilsum, In Extremis, of her life. Gives fascinating insight into what drove her ‘to bear witness’.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 01/09/2021 18:48

Good to see Lyse Doucet recognised for her outstanding reporting in these awful conditions. Along with all the other journalists who appear to have stayed out there. I've been very moved by so much of their powerful reporting - Antony Loyd in the Times has produced really insightful pieces.

purityjonesrockedmyworld · 01/09/2021 19:01

She’s not the only one though is she now or in the past. Why single her out?

It managed to be rude, snotty and patronising all at the same time…

JayAlfredPrufrock · 01/09/2021 19:10

@phishy

You ain’t going to give up are you.

Yes I interpreted your remark as both snotty and patronising.

I presume Lyse has looked at her Wiki entry and not bothered to correct the spelling.

phishy · 01/09/2021 19:14

@JayAlfredPrufrock can you explain what’s snotty and patronising about ‘ Miꞌkmaq you mean?’ It’s actually your response to me that was rude, telling me I pissed on your chips. How would you like to be called Brutish instead of British?

ThinWomansBrain · 01/09/2021 19:15

I was really surprised she was still there too.

A few years ago I read a fascinating hook by John Simpson; Strange Places, Questionable People about international war and crisis reporting. It was fascinating covering the changing methods of broadcasting from the 1970s to the late 90's - from the difficulties of getting film reels shipped out, to what he considered really advanced - and obviously things have moved on enormously since then.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 01/09/2021 19:42

@phishy

😂😂😂

More than happy to be called Brutish.

phishy · 01/09/2021 19:45

@JayAlfredPrufrock no explanation on how it was ‘snotty’ or ‘patronising’ then? Thought so. Smile

JayAlfredPrufrock · 01/09/2021 19:45

Anyway. At risk of being jumped on again, I find it quite sad that the three female reporters I’ve looked up so far have no children. Not surprising though.

‘Syliboy, a Mi'kmaq artist in Truro, doesn't find it offensive, but said it is outdated and disrespectful. He said they're saying the name incorrectly.

"If you're … introduced to someone and they don't get your name right, well, you correct them. And if you don't do that, it kind of sits, it lingers, you know?" said Syliboy. "I think that's what it is, is mutual respect."

JayAlfredPrufrock · 01/09/2021 20:13

Whistles ‘Things ain’t what they used to be’.

1ittlegreen · 01/09/2021 20:36

I think they are looking at neighbouring borders as there are still a lot of support staff there including Lyse. It's such a worry and I hope things work out.

Frazzled2207 · 01/09/2021 20:54

She is on today’s bbc newscast from Kabul sounding quite upbeat! Interesting chat and she has her own podcast coming out too

thenovice · 01/09/2021 21:17

She is amazing, but she has a passport and can get (probably already has) a visa and can travel by car to visit a neighbouring country. The Afghans on the other hand.... Those poor poor people.
The Taliban are now better armed than they have ever been and they are sending letters to former interpreters etc telling them to report to a Taliban court to be tried for aiding the "Crusaders" or face the death penalty. There are no words.

CGORST · 01/09/2021 22:09

Come to think of it, how are any of the reporters getting out? Male or female if they have reported for the UK their lives will be in danger.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 01/09/2021 23:32

Hi Fishy. I’ve spent the evening researching the Mi’kmaq.

If I rocked up to Syliboy in Truro and said

‘Hi there Syliboy, I understand you are a Mi’kmaq’

Anyone walking past would hear

Hi there Silly Boy. I understand you are a Micmac.

So tell me where I’m going wrong?
