Feeling old.
I know I am probably not the demographic but have spent last 5 minutes scrolling Who? even more than I did the Strictly Glitterball line-up! Grin
canvas-story.bbcrewind.co.uk/readingleedsfans/

Mostack
Becky Hill
Declan Mckenna
The kid laroi
Bebadobee
Sports team

Never heard of any of them. Is it just me?
Ah, I thought, I will look at the headliners...
Catfish and the bottlemen. Nope. Never heard of you.
Disclosure. Also not.

I was quicker listing those I had heard of...Stormzy, Lewis Capaldi, QOTSA, Liam Gallagher, Two door cinema club, Wombats and Mabel.
Even then, I could only give you a couple of songs.
KSI, Dababy, Doja cat, Postmalone and Madison Beer, my kids have mentioned in passing but the rest...not the foggiest.

So 7 acts from a two day festival. No FOMO over here.
How many do you know?
Any song recommendations I should have heard already? (there are some links on the beeb which I might listen to if my insomnia continues).

Becky Hill is great but i dont know the others. I've noticed the line up is not as rocky as it used to be. It's all Stormzy/ dave etc who is ok but the line up always used to be stand out amazing rock bands.

malificent7 · 30/08/2021 03:34

Heard of catfish etc...just not anyone on the list.

ginfixx · 30/08/2021 03:46

Sports Team ‘It’s the thing’ is really good

MyCatDribbles · 30/08/2021 03:46

This is what people mean when they say shows like x-factor and pop idol have destroyed music

No one wants to be in a band anymore or do it the organic way

Birdkin · 30/08/2021 04:02

Several of the acts listed are bands
MyCatDribbles · 30/08/2021 04:19

@birdkin
What I meant was, there’s no really big ‘acts’ in rock / pop rock music nowadays, apart from the ones that have been going for years. Very few household names in rock have emerged from the last ten years.
Happy to be proved wrong though, maybe it’s just because I’m older!

1forAll74 · 30/08/2021 04:27

No use asking me who anyone is at these festivals, as I am an oldie, As far as I am concerned, all the music sounds totally rubbish and tuneless.

I was just having a quick look at the Reading festival, and did actually know Liam Gallagher, but what a scruffy miserable looking lot he and the band where.

Ozgirl75 · 30/08/2021 04:29

The Kid Laroi I know as he’s Australian - did that awful misogynistic song with the line “you can’t make a wife out of a ho”. I know of Dababy and Post Malone through my kids and obviously Liam Gallagher and Stormzy.
I went to Reading in (gulp) 94 and it was amazing! Saw the Chillis, Ice Cube, Soundgarden, Manics, Therapy?, Cypress Hill, Lemonheads, the Verve, as well as loads of other bands like Elastica , Terrorvison, Honky etc. It was absolutely brilliant.

Ozgirl75 · 30/08/2021 04:31

I agree that there haven’t been any huge, great rock bands really since the 90s. This may also be my age but I do keep up with music through my kids and I can’t think of any huge bands that would fill Wembley or those kind of places.

BikeRunSki · 30/08/2021 04:58

DNeph roadied for Catfish etc before they were famous. So I’ve heard of them.
Also Sports team.
Stormzy
Liam Gallagher
QOTSA
Lewis C
Two door cinema club.

That’s about it, but it’s 20 years since I last went Leeds fest and saw Travis.

RJnomore1 · 30/08/2021 05:08

Heard of most of them, you nddd yo listen to more music! Catfish are huge they’re hardy unknown.

Sports team are at TRNSMT in 2 weeks I’m
Not happy they’re on first on Friday ss goodness knows if I’ll be there in time to see them.

Justme10 · 30/08/2021 06:21

I'm in my 20s and have only heard of 9 of them and only like 4 Grin

clary · 30/08/2021 06:29

My ds2 (18) is a big Sports Team fan. I couldn't remember what they were called and said Swim Squad by mistake so they are known as that now in our house. Grin

I have also heard of Catfish but not the others. My festival days are long past.

maddy68 · 30/08/2021 06:34

I'm in my 50s and know most of them (I've seen most of them too ) it depends on how you listen to music I guess or if you expose yourself to new music. (many of these bands have been around for years though ?)

Waxonwaxoff0 · 30/08/2021 06:36

I've heard of most of them apart from the last 5 in the first list. Apart from Liam Gallagher none of them are my cup of tea. I'm 31.

sayanythingelse · 30/08/2021 06:46

I'm surprised you've never heard of Catfish or Disclosure. They're not really my thing but a quick listen to the radio on the way to work and you're likely to have heard these artists.

Use it as an excuse to find new artists you like. When I go to festivals, I usually give the artists I haven't heard of a listen before I go. I found some brilliant bands that I would have skipped otherwise.

newnortherner111 · 30/08/2021 06:55

I've only met one of the acts on the bill this year, I agree with the OP that it is a line up of largely new artists.

tttigress · 30/08/2021 07:10

The thing is, I have quit listening to the radio, so hard to discover new music.

I do kind of a agree (but I might be wrong due to lack of listening to the radio), that not many really big global bands/acts have emerged recently. There seem to be a lot of 40/50 year olds pretending they are still young.

HugeAckmansWife · 30/08/2021 07:12

ozgirl I'm a similar age to you and know all those bands, though not especially a fan of rock, but my parents wouldn't have. I also think, like TV, streaming has made it possible for a much wider range of artists to be heard. In the 90s it was still TOTP, very mainstream. You had to work quite hard to be into different bands.

Suzysunflower · 30/08/2021 07:15

Disclosure are massive in dance/electronic music and they are brilliant. Their lockdown mix for the bbc (also on iolayer) was great.

CovidCorvid · 30/08/2021 07:20

Declan McKenna is a great singer/songwriter.

Yesitsbess · 30/08/2021 07:23

Bebadobee is superb, very 90s girl rock group vibe with a weird hint of the Bangles and a whiff of Pixies.

Post Malone is my guilty pleasure and his videos are quite funny.

maddiemookins16mum · 30/08/2021 07:25

Nope, never heard of 95% of them.

MrsDThomas · 30/08/2021 07:29

My daughter is coming home from leeds today and it was her 1st festival (and cant wait to go more).

She sent me a text to say who she saw and i had no bloody idea who she was talking about.

RosieLemonade · 30/08/2021 07:31

Gross that DaBaby is playing after his recent comments. We love the kid laroi but his set wasn't amazing. Gutted Machine Gun Kelly pulled out.
