Feeling old.
I know I am probably not the demographic but have spent last 5 minutes scrolling Who? even more than I did the Strictly Glitterball line-up! Grin
canvas-story.bbcrewind.co.uk/readingleedsfans/

Mostack
Becky Hill
Declan Mckenna
The kid laroi
Bebadobee
Sports team

Never heard of any of them. Is it just me?
Ah, I thought, I will look at the headliners...
Catfish and the bottlemen. Nope. Never heard of you.
Disclosure. Also not.

I was quicker listing those I had heard of...Stormzy, Lewis Capaldi, QOTSA, Liam Gallagher, Two door cinema club, Wombats and Mabel.
Even then, I could only give you a couple of songs.
KSI, Dababy, Doja cat, Postmalone and Madison Beer, my kids have mentioned in passing but the rest...not the foggiest.

So 7 acts from a two day festival. No FOMO over here.
How many do you know?
Any song recommendations I should have heard already? (there are some links on the beeb which I might listen to if my insomnia continues).

I was reading about the history of Reading and Leeds yesterday. It's interesting how the festival has changed over the years along with the music policy. I think they have to appeal to a younger crowd in order to not become another generic festival. They are not trying to be Glastonbury.

This year is particularly poor for festivals as a lot of US bands have probably worked out it isn't worth their while to play a UK festival if they can't take it on to a tour. And so many tours have been cancelled. Hopefully next year it will pick up.

Mammyloveswine · 30/08/2021 11:51

I'm 34 and haven't heard of most of them!!

Mind I was never one for festivals anyway! And my favourite "bands" growing up were boyzone and west life Grin

The most alternative I got was travis, muse, the stereophonics and linkin park!

I did love pulp and the verve too!

ScabbyHorse · 30/08/2021 11:52

The reason for this is more to do with the fact that it's been super difficult to get bands to commit to festivals during the pandemic.

GellerYeller · 30/08/2021 11:53

@overnightangel some big names even now on that lineup!
@mewkins spot on, bigger artists are waiting to tour around the festival circuit for sure.
I had friends who worked as crew at Leeds many years ago, all so they could see The Strokes I think it was. That was the year before they moved it to the new site. They had a birds eye view of the near riot that ensued when a band was late IIRC- was it Guns and Roses?

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 30/08/2021 12:08

Gone all nostalgic at the sight of the 2000 line up. I was last there 2005-6. It was a real high-point for festivals (as was Sonisphere 2010, headlined by Alice Cooper, Rammstein and Iron Maiden).

Nowadays, any live event would do me. I think it's having been stuck indoors with no socialising for 1.5 years that's lowered my bar! Anything for some normality and some really good live music.

@ACPC

I do think it's important that young people have their shot at upsetting us oldies, it's just a shame they're upsetting us because the music is bland! I'd love another big thing to happen for them. A 2020 punk, rave etc
Fontaines D C might be up your alley. Played the Sunday Common Stage at Victorious and had a different sound (reminded me of Mark E Smith/The Fall).
TabithaTiger · 30/08/2021 12:41

@megletthesecond

I've heard of all of them. But I do still listen to radio 1 and I'm 47. I can't bear old music, life's too short for Heart FM etc. I really wanted to go and see Stormzy and Post Malone.
Me too, I can't bear Heart and Radio 2 is so full. I've been saying for a while we need a radio 1.5!

I went to Reading in 2019 on the Sunday to see FooFighters, who were amazing, but I wasn't that bothered by the rest of the line up. 17 year DC thought it was awesome though. I also went in 2012 when it was nearly all rock bands, so the change to more dance/ R&B/Grime artists has happened quite recently and I guess reflects what the target audience want.

The first year I went was 1993.

*Radio 2 is so dull I meant.

BlackForestCake · 30/08/2021 12:45

@maddy68

I'm in my 50s and know most of them (I've seen most of them too ) it depends on how you listen to music I guess or if you expose yourself to new music. (many of these bands have been around for years though ?)
Yes, alright, John Peel.
GrannyWeatherwaxsHatpin · 30/08/2021 12:47

Liam Gallagher is not if interest or relevance to the reading demographic- no idea why he was booked!

As someone who lives near enough by to be able to hear the festival quite clearly, the crowd were definitely singing along enthusiastically with the Oasis "classics" (even though most of them weren't born at the time of Britpop...).

I looked at the line up too and my first thought was 'Who the fuck are all these?" But I guess big names aren't touring again yet and Reading/Leeds isn't my demographic anymore. It stopped being a rock festival in the last decade or so and started being Radio 1 Playlist In A Field, which is what the kids want, I guess. To look at them going back this morning (more wrecks than the Armada Grin ) they aren't what I'd call your usual festival crowd!

I’d love to be able to watch all staggering their way home Grin Bless.

Another thing I’m too old for.

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 30/08/2021 13:00

I’m 50 and I love Declan McKenna, he is really very good! I quite like Beebadoobee too. And Yungblud. But I do have teenagers and that’s how I’ve heard them. Having said that the teenagers have very eclectic tastes. One of them is studying music and will continue to degree level, she listens to a very wide range and, yes, she does like Liam Gallagher too.

ACPC · 30/08/2021 13:17

@SleepOhHowIMissYou
Thanks I've added them to my Spotify Smile

MintyCedric · 30/08/2021 13:28

Heard of a fair few of them...also love Ashnikko and Bad Bad Chiller Crew in our house who were there in the small print.

DD is 17 next month and already making plans to go next year Grin.

MrsKellySeveride · 30/08/2021 13:34

DS 17 has been a massive Kid Laroi fan for ages. His music is awful. Every other word is a swear word, the subject matter is drugs, dying of overdoses, gangsters, being shot, women being "hos" "bitches", every name under the sun. I've tried multiple times to have conversations with DS about appropriate language but because I'm ancient and know nothing, my views don't count. Apparently Laroi is the most popular music act on the planet and there is literally only me who dislikes him.

Anyway, DS was very excited to watch the Laroi set yesterday - even super fan wandered off and went on Instagram instead.

He "sang" (actually shouted) along to a backing track of his own songs, missed 90% of the lyrics. A random bloke shouted the last word of every line. Just embarrassing.

DS claims that Laroi can't keep up with his own lyrics because he smokes. That is the only criticism he can come up with!

Really very very unsavoury.

And I've turned into my Dad.

Ozgirl75 · 30/08/2021 13:46

It’s so bizarre because although “Kid Laroi” is from a fairly deprived area of Sydney, his dad was a music producer and his mum a talent scout and he ended up at a really prestigious private performing arts school. It’s not like he’s from “the streets” in the slightest.
I hate all the women hating lyrics, though we’d grown out of that years ago.

Flumpaphone · 30/08/2021 19:59

@Yesitsbess Mine is Pootle, all Pootle

gogohm · 30/08/2021 22:27

No and dd (who went 2 years ago) confessed she hadn't heard of most of the line up and it was rubbish. They are doing IofW instead

DishingOutDone · 31/08/2021 00:11

Can I just pop on to say that on the back of this thread I googled Sports Team and my mind is blown; and that also I was 59 last week.

As you were.

RosieLemonade · 31/08/2021 06:12

Saw Blossoms replaced MGK. They have some really good songs. One of my favourite ever bands.

KicksLikeASIeepTwitch · 01/09/2021 00:21

Popping back on. I listen to Editors too much clearly and need to change from radio 2 Grin
Turns out I had seen Becky Hill on the lateish show and KSI on celeb gogglebox. Watched some of the highlights. Quite liked Bebadobee.
Catfish were before I got back to UK a couple of years ago. Disclosure I knew one song. Wolf Alice and Biffy Clyro I know but don't.
Dua Lipa I know off by heart

I'm 31 and I didn't think the line up was great. Saying that, Waterparks got to headline which is amazing.
Slam dunk fest is a good one for pop punk/rock (I am going this year) and there are certainly some good bands playing. Though not as many as normal because, covid.
