Feeling old.
I know I am probably not the demographic but have spent last 5 minutes scrolling Who? even more than I did the Strictly Glitterball line-up! Grin
canvas-story.bbcrewind.co.uk/readingleedsfans/

Mostack
Becky Hill
Declan Mckenna
The kid laroi
Bebadobee
Sports team

Never heard of any of them. Is it just me?
Ah, I thought, I will look at the headliners...
Catfish and the bottlemen. Nope. Never heard of you.
Disclosure. Also not.

I was quicker listing those I had heard of...Stormzy, Lewis Capaldi, QOTSA, Liam Gallagher, Two door cinema club, Wombats and Mabel.
Even then, I could only give you a couple of songs.
KSI, Dababy, Doja cat, Postmalone and Madison Beer, my kids have mentioned in passing but the rest...not the foggiest.

So 7 acts from a two day festival. No FOMO over here.
How many do you know?
Any song recommendations I should have heard already? (there are some links on the beeb which I might listen to if my insomnia continues).

Mumsnet isn't really the target audience for Reading festival so it's unsurprising you've not heard of some of the acts.

Sunday is always the day when they show more rock acts. You must have heard of Biffy Clyro surely? Wolf Alice?

Tabithtiger · 30/08/2021 07:35

@Ozgirl75

I agree that there haven’t been any huge, great rock bands really since the 90s. This may also be my age but I do keep up with music through my kids and I can’t think of any huge bands that would fill Wembley or those kind of places.
Foofighters?

when I went to my first Reading in the mid 1990s, I was a pretty big fan of music, serial NME reader, and, top to bottom, I'd probably heard of two thirds of the main stage bands. in terms of bands who I knew well enough to sing (or hum or whatever) one of their songs without any prompting or clues the figure would certainly be well below half. the economics of a festival don't work if every act is a chart topper.

of course if you'd run the same tests past my mother at the same time, she'd have struggled to get anywhere near as high as one in ten.

FlumpsAreShit · 30/08/2021 07:47

Disclosure are big, brilliant and I remember listening to them in 2013/2014. I've heard of many of those but couldn't name songs either. I'm only 30 but apparently already old and boring.

KittyMcKitty · 30/08/2021 07:50

My 16 year old is at Reading at the moment and has seen some great bands - there aren’t thebAmerican acts there this year really due to COVID but some really great organically grown artists.

Liam Gallagher is not if interest or relevance to the reading demographic- no idea why he was booked! Look at the clips of girl in red - she had a massive crowd!

Stormzy was the big name (and apparently was amazing) but there was also Post Malone, Slow Thai, Baakar, Two Door Cinema Club, Ashniiko, Becky Hill, Beebadoobie, Nathan McKenna, Mabel and AJ Tracey and loads of others …

I feel with Reading we (as parents) are not supposed to like the music - we’re not the target audience.

FlumpsAreShit · 30/08/2021 07:50

I think Latch is one of Disclosures more recognisable songs but this is recent and I think it's just utterly joyful

Yesitsbess · 30/08/2021 07:55

@FlumpsAreShit is your username referring to the low-cost marshmallow treat or the beloved 1980s TV show featuring Pootle?

AlecTrevelyan006 · 30/08/2021 07:55

@MyCatDribbles

This is what people mean when they say shows like x-factor and pop idol have destroyed music

No one wants to be in a band anymore or do it the organic way

This.

Sad times.

tootingbeclido · 30/08/2021 07:57

JO MO!

blackteaplease · 30/08/2021 07:57

I went to Leeds age 19 and Reading at 21 many moons ago and hadn't heard of a lot of the bands. That's part of the fun, the experience and exposure to new music.

bert3400 · 30/08/2021 08:00

Disclosure are great and I'm 53. Also heard of Catfish.... I guess it depends where you listen to music

rattusrattus20 · 30/08/2021 08:07

an obvious point here regarding younger 'rock' acts, is that, globally, more than ever, the last few years have been dominated by, I suppose, 'black music'. the UK does have its own such scene, albeit a modest one that (e.g.) isn't strong enough to export internationally in any numbers, and domestically probably benefits from a fair wind in terms of media coverage, it's obviously restricted by the size of the talent pool.

NeverTalkToStrangers · 30/08/2021 08:08

Note to self, pay more attention to band names when Radio 6 comes on in the morning. Possibly listen to 6 rather than 3 while WFH.

ILookAtTheFloor · 30/08/2021 08:08

You've missed off Biffy.

MON THE BIFF!!

But yes, I'm the same, I looked back at the line ups from the Readings I went too, 2006, 2007 and 2008 and it was fabulous.

It's not really a rock festival now, I'm not sure why, whether it's because alt music is now less popular or whether there was pressure to be less 'white males with guitars'.

SleepOhHowIMissYou · 30/08/2021 08:09

Muse (UK). The already mentioned Queens of the Stoneage (US).

Went to Victorious final night (Portsmouth) yesterday and Royal Blood headlined. Amazing what sound can be made with just a drum kit, vocals and base guitar (no lead or rhythm) so I must disagree that there's nothing "new" emerging also.

FlumpsAreShit · 30/08/2021 08:10

@Yesitsbess the low cost marshmallow foodstuffs (refuse to call them a treat)...really scraping the NC barrel now Grin

Tipmeup · 30/08/2021 08:13

I don’t think most teens/20s (maybe even 30s) really listen to rock do they? I think they associate it more with their parents.

Lorw · 30/08/2021 08:15

Not really an alternative music festival anymore which is a shame 😞

the line up is very poor apart from a few 🤷🏻‍♀️

SusieBob · 30/08/2021 08:22

You know you've gotten old when you are moaning about music not being as good as it used to be.

The fact is, guitar based rock music is not the predominant popular music form anymore so festivals obviously feature less of those artists.

Heatherjayne1972 · 30/08/2021 08:22

I live close enough to Reading festival to hear it clearly from my lounge/ garden etc
Youngblud is pretty good
Stormzy
Postmalone
Waterparks
Lewis c
Two door cinema club
Are all popular with my teenagers

But oasis last night was the only one I really could sing along to

LatinMumof2 · 30/08/2021 08:23

Just here to say I love your username OP, I'd go to Reading if Tom and the lads headlined.

But agree with PP, not my age group, DC has had a great time

EndoplasmicReticulum · 30/08/2021 08:23

I asked son if he wanted to go this year (just finished year 11), he said no his friends and he decided the line up wasn't worth the ticket price. He's a bit sensible though I did explain that watching the bands isn't the only reason to go.

hellcatspangle · 30/08/2021 08:25

Foofighters?

Who formed in1994...I assume the poster meant 2000 onwards. So I'll offer Arctic Monkeys (2002)

Oneborneverydecade · 30/08/2021 08:25

Declan Mckenna, Bebadobee, Catfish and the bottlemen, Disclosure, Stormzy, Lewis Capaldi, Liam Gallagher, Two door cinema club and Mabel
KSI, Dababy (not for his music), Doja Cat, Post Malone.
I recognise these from your list. 43, listen to R1 and have a teen

Yesitsbess · 30/08/2021 08:29

Thank goodness. I had my fighting trousers half-on then. I would defend Pootle to the end.
