Feeling old.
I know I am probably not the demographic but have spent last 5 minutes scrolling Who? even more than I did the Strictly Glitterball line-up! Grin

Mostack
Becky Hill
Declan Mckenna
The kid laroi
Bebadobee
Sports team

Never heard of any of them. Is it just me?
Ah, I thought, I will look at the headliners...
Catfish and the bottlemen. Nope. Never heard of you.
Disclosure. Also not.

I was quicker listing those I had heard of...Stormzy, Lewis Capaldi, QOTSA, Liam Gallagher, Two door cinema club, Wombats and Mabel.
Even then, I could only give you a couple of songs.
KSI, Dababy, Doja cat, Postmalone and Madison Beer, my kids have mentioned in passing but the rest...not the foggiest.

So 7 acts from a two day festival. No FOMO over here.
How many do you know?
Any song recommendations I should have heard already? (there are some links on the beeb which I might listen to if my insomnia continues).

I only know Stormzy and only in the capacity of in relation to the Kardashians, oh hang on, is that Stormy? (and something in the media re scholarships for black students to study at university), know nothing of his music though. Liam Gallagher and Lewis Capaldi.

It’s why I now stick with heart and magic radio, don’t know any of the artists on the likes of Capital and R1! (I’m not even that old!)

supermoonrising · 30/08/2021 09:25

Yeah, I’d say the beginning of the 00 s saw the last big rock bands: Strokes, the Killers, the White Stripes and the Arctic Monkeys.
And it’s no coincidence that while that bunch have a lot of talent, they were soundwise (and looks wise) all massive throwbacks to earlier stuff (the Killers a partial exception).

Bass, guitar, drums, all with no sampling - it just came to the end of the road really - and in the digital age other genres just seemed a better fit.

Terriah · 30/08/2021 09:28

Well thanks to this thread, I've now discovered Sports Team! Currently got them on Spotify.

supermoonrising · 30/08/2021 09:34

As an aside, check out Liam Gallagher “Stand by me” on YT. He sounds absolutely brilliant, almost as good as his 90s peak. Considering his voice was totally wrecked for quite a few years, it’s great to hear.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 30/08/2021 09:38

Hence Liam Gallagher who hasn’t had a big hit for twenty years being a headliner.

I’m not particularly a fan but his two solo albums went to number 1 here and top 30 in the US, he’s still very popular.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 30/08/2021 09:38

The documentary about him on BBC over Christmas made me feel really sad. He seems quite lost and desperate to be loved.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 30/08/2021 09:44

I was surprised at how few I had heard of.

Catfish and the Bottlemen sound interesting, especially given the usual flannel given about their front man Serge Pizzorno, Alex Turner and Carl Barat rolled into one epic leather jacket

I guessed they must be very well known as the while crowd was singing along. But I was left more bemused than entertained. Sad really as everything u have read about them suggests they are my kind of band. They just seemed everything lite!

UnfinishedBunting · 30/08/2021 09:47

I looked this up last night, and felt incredibly old when I hardly recognised anyone 😄. Definitely reduced my FOMO.

Meatshake · 30/08/2021 09:49

I remember the same thing being moaned about when the Brit Pop and Crusty Rock of the 90s gave way to the US import pop punk of the 00s.

Things change, tastes change, old people get confused by young people. That doesn't change.

UnfinishedBunting · 30/08/2021 09:49

But I'm incredibly out of touch - I've started listening to the radio again for my kid's sake.

helentomelon · 30/08/2021 09:50

@Ozgirl75

The Kid Laroi I know as he’s Australian - did that awful misogynistic song with the line “you can’t make a wife out of a ho”. I know of Dababy and Post Malone through my kids and obviously Liam Gallagher and Stormzy. I went to Reading in (gulp) 94 and it was amazing! Saw the Chillis, Ice Cube, Soundgarden, Manics, Therapy?, Cypress Hill, Lemonheads, the Verve, as well as loads of other bands like Elastica , Terrorvison, Honky etc. It was absolutely brilliant.
I was at this one. And the 5 after that. Huge amazing rock bands that have stood the test of time.

I feel old.

pinkstinks · 30/08/2021 10:01

Biffy Clyro!!!!! Ffs

Oblomov21 · 30/08/2021 10:01

Ds1 was supposed to go last year after GCSE's but obviously didn't. He then recently said he didn't want to go anymore so I sold his ticket. But I too thought the line up was incredibly poor.

idontlikealdi · 30/08/2021 10:11

Reading and Leeds are watered down festivals for post GCSE kids these days. Not a surprise at the line up at all.

pecanmix · 30/08/2021 10:29

Becky hill has a great voice but I've no idea of the rest of them!

Nomorefuckstogive · 30/08/2021 10:38

I actually love new music. There’s some really great stuff around, but maybe you need a teen to help you navigate it. My DD doesn’t seem to mind that I like some of the stuff she likes (not all!) but she does laugh at me! I’m really old, BTW Grin

Justme10 · 30/08/2021 10:44

Oh I didn't know biffy was there, saw them a a few years ago in Glasgow and they are amazing live!

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 30/08/2021 10:47

I was a regular at Leeds for years. The thing lost its way when the organisation passed over from Mean Fiddler to Festival Republic. It's never been the same since, I'm sorry to say. Check out the set lists for 2005/2006: the headline sets by the Pixies and Pearl Jam were phenomenal.

Nowadays, you couldn't give me a ticket for free. Will be right back at Download next year hopefully, and as an August replacement for Leeds/Reading I quite fancy the Green Man too.

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 30/08/2021 10:51

@ChicChaos

I like Becky Hill, she's probably the only most successful contestant from The Voice that I can think of (she didn't win it).
I thought I hadn't heard of her, didn't recognise her name at all, but actually I knew loads of her tracks from listening to Radio 1. Her set was excellent and her voice is amazing!
BoomChicka · 30/08/2021 10:59

Becky Hill is great, really pleased she got a stage spot after seeing her in one of the dance tents in 2019 - promped me to see her twice since then! Catfish have been around years, first saw them at an XFM gig.. Post Malone was fantastic in 2019, really suprised me in a good way.

megletthesecond · 30/08/2021 11:01

I've heard of all of them. But I do still listen to radio 1 and I'm 47. I can't bear old music, life's too short for Heart FM etc.
I really wanted to go and see Stormzy and Post Malone.

GellerYeller · 30/08/2021 11:08

My kids wanted to go the previous Reading/Leeds to see Billie Eilish, Foo Fighters, Post Malone and Twenty One Pilots. The oldest had a chance to go this year but was only really bothered about Alfie Templeman and possibly Liam. Youngest likes You me At Six, Beabadoobee, Girl in Red and Yungblud.
They use my Spotify in the car so the algorithm gets skewed by their preferences and I quite often end up listening to suggestions based on 'their' music! Waterparks, The Wombats. All fine by me!

GellerYeller · 30/08/2021 11:19

Can also recommend Blossoms and The Sherlocks, seen the latter live and they were outstanding.

overnightangel · 30/08/2021 11:24

@clary

My ds2 (18) is a big Sports Team fan. I couldn't remember what they were called and said Swim Squad by mistake so they are known as that now in our house. Grin

I have also heard of Catfish but not the others. My festival days are long past.

My ex housemate used to call Snow Patrol “the Seaweed Police” after a similar mix up 🤦🏻‍♀️ 😂
overnightangel · 30/08/2021 11:27

I last went in 2000 after my A Levels, looking back at the line up I didn’t realise at the time how good we had it back then

to wonder who the hell this line-up is? (Leeds/Reading)
