to say women who live with men don't own power tools

Iooking at the early responses, I maybe asked the wrong question, many women are responding that they own "small" tools or "small" toolboxes, but not the power tools,

so basically the same again

YABU- I am a woman living with a man, and I own power tools, or share equal ownership of the power tools in our household

YANBU - I am a woman living with a man, and he owns the power tools in this house, or mostly owns them

Again, if you don't live with a man, please don't vote, but please comment

When I did live with my 2 husbands (not at the same time) any tools we had were mine and I would be the one to use them. Now I live alone but they are still mine and I use them.

ditalini · 23/08/2021 10:31

Again, all tools are bought and mostly used by me. So my drill, my sander, my electric screwdriver, my jigsaw.

PenCreed · 23/08/2021 10:31

DH has never used the drill, even though it was technically his. It's mine now.

BaronessBomburst · 23/08/2021 10:32

I asked for (and got) a new drill as a wedding present. Would that count as mine, or joint?

PicsInRed · 23/08/2021 10:33

Are you a woman? Something about these questions is odd and ... both lacking understanding of the modern woman and desperately wanting a particular answer?

KingdomScrolls · 23/08/2021 10:35

Most of the power tools we have I already owned before DH moved in with me. The one time he got his hands on my hedge trimmer he cut through the wire within five minutes , he also went straight through a water pipe with an industrial sander we'd hired

EatYourVegetables · 23/08/2021 10:36

What an odd question.

We own a box of tools, consider them joint property (like the house, or the shower, or the hoover) and both use them.

When we started living together we created this box b combining the tools that each of us owned. They were very simple. We added more tools incl the power drill later from the joint budget.

yes I am a woman, and the answer I am hoping for is to see equality, which I largely am

I have always been single, and own my own tools, but my experience of buying tools has recently been that I am the only woman in that isle, and as a teacher, some of what I have read about inequality in the UK has mentioned toolbox ownership and use

I own the power tools, I bought them. I prefer to not use them when he is around as they are big. I am perfectly capable of using them when he is not here. Are you settling an argument or something OP? I feel like you’re looking for the answer that you want.

Yesitsbess · 23/08/2021 10:38

I own all the power tools.

FlipFlops4Me · 23/08/2021 10:38

I have a power drill, an electric screwdriver, a power sander and a belt driven jig-saw. I use all of them. I also have a diddy little sander, and a Dremel set for small work. Also got a black and decker workmate.

phishy · 23/08/2021 10:38

YABU, the toolbox and electric screw driver were bought by both of us and so was - GASP - the spirit level.

Freddiefox · 23/08/2021 10:38

When I lived with my ex, the tools were ours. He never used them though. They are mine now.

Yes, also odd given OP has two very similar posts going simultaneously
SprogletsMum · 23/08/2021 10:40

The power tools are all his, all of the tools are his. I can use the little drill for bits and bobs but I don't like to use them, I'm not good at it and he is, so he uses them.

Foxglovesandlilacs86 · 23/08/2021 10:41

We’re quite old fashioned like that. DH has turned the garage into quite a fancy workshop. Our two year old calls the garage daddy’s room and the kitchen mummy’s room Grin

So for me yanbu. I don’t lift a finger when it comes to diy in this house.

Wbeezer · 23/08/2021 10:41

The power washer, the drill and the petrol strimmer are mine, all chosen by me for gifts. I have always done DIY, DH not so much. It's not anymore difficult than cooking in my opinion.

Lyricallie · 23/08/2021 10:41

I don't really understand the question. They are just household things in the same way the blender or the mop is a household thing. We both own them. I occasionally use the drill and I definitely use the smaller non-power ones like the socket screw driver and multitool and Stanley knife but they're not mine of his, they're the house's.

FrogInASock · 23/08/2021 10:42

All of the tools - be they small or power have been bought from the joint account. So I guess they are “ours”, however I’m the only one who buys them or uses them. DH may occasionally use a screwdriver if a saucepan handle gets a bit loose, but he’s equally as likely to fuck up one of “our” butter knives by trying to use that.

I do all the DIY and renovations in our house. We both prefer it that way.

because I firstly just asked about general tool boxes, and got answers from woman saying they owned some small tools, but not power tools, so I started another thread as well, to see if the responses were different

*or his

AllforOnsies · 23/08/2021 10:44

I own my own tools for my business and some mine are superior to his. We can both turn our hand to DIY and occasionally dip in and out of each others tool boxes if I need something for work or he doesn't have the exact tool for a job he's doing.

I would never dream of asking him to do a job if I can see it needs doing and vice versa.

Bluntness100 · 23/08/2021 10:44

Odd question, of course women own tools and use them, it’s not the 1950s.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 23/08/2021 10:44

I'm the DIYer in our house. We pooled our tools but mine were more badass to start with (I already had all the things with nasty blades and some sanders)

PurplePlain · 23/08/2021 10:45

Bit of a mixed answer. Dp tends to buy any power tools we own as he enjoys it, whereas I see it as a task. But my 15 year old daughter owns and uses power tools for one of her hobbies.
