To think that August is actually the crappiest month of the year?

If you live in England anyway.

Full month of school holidays but invariably much worse weather than June and July, combined with the fact it is noticeable that the nights are drawing in.
Combined with the pressure to make the summer holiday memories and the expense of doing so.

Mix in the back to school shopping (and the amount that sets you back) and the failure of any retailer to stock enough items, and then trying to find, amongst the small selection, shoes that are black and polishable and have no logo AND that a teenager is prepared to wear.

Then the realisation of what is coming -the school runs in worsening weather, the homework onslaught, the extra curricular, the extra washing, the dark nights but all combined in a month which is meant to be joyful.

Give me January any day!

January is far worse!

Although I can’t talk as Sundays are my most loathed day off the week and always has been, even if it meant no school/work.

But January is hopeful, moving in the right direction.

Interesting about you and Sunday's, why was that, because they were meant to be great and positive but actually were a let down like August

February is complete bollocks

MrsSkylerWhite · 17/08/2021 19:57

We’ve had some fantastic weather in January/February on UK breaks. The past few years, May and June have definitely given us (in England) the best weather. September is usually good, too, just after the kids go back 🙄
August has been a damp squib for 4 years where we are (NW)

AdaFuckingShelby · 17/08/2021 19:57

February and August are definitely my least favourite months

OldTinHat · 17/08/2021 19:58

No! It's the best! Last bank holiday before Christmas, last of summer days, month of mine, DS2 and nephew's birthdays (and mine is a BIG one soon!). Much better than the expectations in May and June for the weather, the disappointment in July that the weight you wanted to lose in order to waft about in dresses never got lost and the grim month of November when the weather is dire an you realise you can't afford Christmas presents.

newnortherner111 · 17/08/2021 19:58

My mum would agree with you as many of her activities don't take place in August, and so she feels something is missing.

RedToothBrush · 17/08/2021 19:59

Combined with the pressure to make the summer holiday memories and the expense of doing so.

Doesn't compute.

Never felt this pressure.

Velcropaws · 17/08/2021 20:00

I must admit I am really not enjoying this August. All it has done is rain where I am! I should be taking advantage and clearing out the house, but I am not!

GreenTortoise · 17/08/2021 20:00

YABU my Birthday is in August Grin.

I like the darker nights as I love winter.

ToykotoLosAngeles · 17/08/2021 20:01

I hate it too. I can't go anywhere I'd usually take DS(2) as it's all rammed.

Tal45 · 17/08/2021 20:01

August is generally rubbish I agree (but definitely not worse than January!) It promises so much as the kids are off school and it is the time when everyone goes on 'summer' holiday but is often wet and can already start to feel autumnal by the middle of the month. I'm always hopeful that it's going to be lovely because it's the height of summer and generally always disappointed.

Squirrelblanket · 17/08/2021 20:02

March and August are my most boring months I think. I usually go on holiday the first two weeks of September so August always feels 487 days long.

TooStressyTooMessy · 17/08/2021 20:03

YANBU. I despise August.

ApolloandDaphne · 17/08/2021 20:04

August is fabulous. It contains my birthday and my wedding anniversary.

Northernsoullover · 17/08/2021 20:05

In August I get a horrible feeling in my gut. I hate the winter so much that August feels like impending doom. I'm only truly happy between March and July.I hide it well I promise!

toolazytothinkofausername · 17/08/2021 20:06

I'm ready for September/Autumn!

Meredusoleil · 17/08/2021 20:07

I agree with the OP but still find November - February the worst 4 months of the year. Darkness. Rain. Cold and grey weather. Short days and long nights. No thank you!

QueenHofScotland · 17/08/2021 20:07

I’m in Scotland and like August. My kids go back to school mid August and we often get some nice weather around that time.

July is my favourite though - that’s when we have our full month off.

SummersOverSeasideTown · 17/08/2021 20:07

Exactly, it over promises and undeliveres, January doesn't have that arrogance, it knows it is crap so any small improvement is welcomed.

August has been a damp squib exactly made worse by the fact it is meant to be glorious.

I hate it too. I can't go anywhere I'd usually take DS(2) as it's all rammed as my name suggests, I feel your pain. Should have added that to my original post.

I'm the same but manage to be OK from March-October. Basically during the months of daylight savings, when the clocks have gone forward an hour in Spring and before they go back again in Autumn!
RoseMartha · 17/08/2021 20:10

No, as I dislike jan and feb the most and find them depressing.
March and Nov and Dec are passable.
Rest of the year I like.

We also got cheated out of May this year. Sodding weather Sad

Hope you noticed I prefaced it as a English problem Smile because you are right, a whole month in July would not be depressing!
