To think that August is actually the crappiest month of the year?

If you live in England anyway.

Full month of school holidays but invariably much worse weather than June and July, combined with the fact it is noticeable that the nights are drawing in.
Combined with the pressure to make the summer holiday memories and the expense of doing so.

Mix in the back to school shopping (and the amount that sets you back) and the failure of any retailer to stock enough items, and then trying to find, amongst the small selection, shoes that are black and polishable and have no logo AND that a teenager is prepared to wear.

Then the realisation of what is coming -the school runs in worsening weather, the homework onslaught, the extra curricular, the extra washing, the dark nights but all combined in a month which is meant to be joyful.

Give me January any day!

I prefer the darker nights, makes it easier for me to sleep at a decent time when I have early shifts the next morning Smile

suckingonchillidogs · 17/08/2021 20:51

I don't mind January at all because it means the horror of Christmas is over for a whole year and spring is on the way! Don't mind August either. Hate Nov/Dec.

FedNlanders · 17/08/2021 20:52

@plodalong12

January is far worse!

Although I can’t talk as Sundays are my most loathed day off the week and always has been, even if it meant no school/work.

Me too.i hate them.
ZaraCarmichaelshighheels · 17/08/2021 20:55

August weather is always such a disappointment, it’s just that depressing relentless grey that ‘nothing’ type of weather, it is definitely the worse of the summer months, consistently disappointing. Love October to December, Halloween, Bonfire night, Christmas! I don’t mind January!

AnyFucker · 17/08/2021 20:57

August is shit. Every year I fail to understand why English school holidays have their bulk in August.

It’s not summer, and it’s not Autumn. It’s just meh

Myrrhis · 17/08/2021 20:57

January is terrible and anyone born in the first half of this awful month deserves a tax break to make up for it. Or at least a second birthday of their choosing, perhaps in May.

Sloth66 · 17/08/2021 21:08

In August the evenings are getting dark earlier. I love autumn, so looking forward to September

YouMeandtheSpew · 17/08/2021 21:26

I actually hate March the most of all the months. Technically spring but winter in everything but name.

vixeyann · 17/08/2021 21:28

Find August a really nothing month. I live in a popular tourist area so it's hard to go anywhere without traffic or too many people. We end up waiting the holidays out and pick quiet times to do stuff. I look forward to September as I love the ber months when it's quieter with things like Fireworks, Christmas and birthdays to look forward to.

tttigress · 17/08/2021 21:32

Interesting theory, I find my memories.of summer are generally to do with things that happen at the very start, and I am thinking great this is going to stretch way into the future. August is usually a let down.

Then you know it can only be up hill from August :(

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 17/08/2021 21:33

I despise November with a passion. Worst month on the calendar by a country mile.

Clocks have long since gone back, winter solstice and the return of longer days is still ages away, and the whole month often feels blanketed in fog and whole days feel like perpetual twilight where it never gets properly light.

January is far better. Lighter hours drawing out a little more each day, Christmas (always very hard work) is over and done with, new beginnings are afoot and spring, my favourite season, is around the corner.

PicsInRed · 17/08/2021 21:34

I love this country so much, this thread 🤣🤣🤣🇬🇧

tttigress · 17/08/2021 21:35

I quite like September/October, but that is because it reminds me of the excitement of the new school / University year, making new connection, when a month or 2 feels like a year, also I like autumn leaves.

Hoolihan · 17/08/2021 21:39

@YouMeandtheSpew agree with you regards March. Absolute cunt of a month, surpassed in horror only by February imo.

lazylinguist · 17/08/2021 21:42

YABU. August doesn't have reliably good weather, but neither does July. August is still summer holidays, so it's good. No reason you can't buy school stuff in July either. And also, except when starting new schools, no reason to buy in time for September. Children don't magically oy grow during the summer- you can buy new uniform whenever they grow out of it. I like early autumn too, so no sense of impending doom for me.

Combined with the pressure to make the summer holiday memories and the expense of doing so.

Confused Ridiculous. You should go on holiday because you actually enjoy going on holiday, not in order to #makememories.

Taswama · 17/08/2021 21:42

August is often a disappointment, but I think calling it the worst month is unfair. It does at least contain a bank holiday to look forward to, unlike November.
BC (before children not before covid!) we had our holidays in May and September.

Hoolihan · 17/08/2021 21:43

I like November, it's got pizazz. Winter is still a novelty. Walks, pub roasts, open fires, the start of Xmas festivities. 8/10.

Porcupineintherough · 17/08/2021 21:44

Moan, moan, moan.

strelitzialady · 17/08/2021 21:46

I turn 50 on the last day of august! So far, august this year has been exhausting - frantically juggling work and limited childcare, endless shit weather and a fear that my birthday will just pass by unnoticed

Vicliz24 · 17/08/2021 21:47

I loathe November despite it being my birthday month . Dark cold and dank with only the horrors of Christmas on the horizon. January we start heading back to the light and Christmas is behind us . I think August is such a sad month because summer is dying and the chances of heat are decreasing.

lifehappened · 17/08/2021 21:49

I normally love it (but it's my birthday month) but this has been a massive wash out this year.

OneTC · 17/08/2021 21:49

This one's been a shocker. Normally my favourite month

user97495 · 17/08/2021 21:54

God no January is awful. Sep-Dec is my favourite time of year, August feels like a Friday, nearly at the funnest part! I've always thought that since a child, loved the start of the school year and autumn. We set money aside for school stuff. Weather starts to turn in Aug (which doesn't usually bother me if we've had a good summer prior although can't say that's the case this year!) work feels different as so many people on holiday, doing fun things with the kids (no pressure? Some days are screen days!), they go away for 2 weeks to grandparents so DH and I get a nice break. Usually have leave sometime in Aug. What's not to like!

Blankspace4 · 17/08/2021 21:56

This particular August is garbage as the weather is just total shite and it feels like autumn already.

But throw back to when I was a child and Augusts were the very best month.

Greytminds · 17/08/2021 21:56

August is definitely a let down weather-wise more often than not. Always think of it as a grey, wet month This year has been worse than ever. I can’t heap hatred on it though - quiet roads, quiet at work and lots on like festivals! We’re still a couple of years away from having a child in school, and live in a totally non touristy place, so that probably helps.
