To think that August is actually the crappiest month of the year?

If you live in England anyway.

Full month of school holidays but invariably much worse weather than June and July, combined with the fact it is noticeable that the nights are drawing in.
Combined with the pressure to make the summer holiday memories and the expense of doing so.

Mix in the back to school shopping (and the amount that sets you back) and the failure of any retailer to stock enough items, and then trying to find, amongst the small selection, shoes that are black and polishable and have no logo AND that a teenager is prepared to wear.

Then the realisation of what is coming -the school runs in worsening weather, the homework onslaught, the extra curricular, the extra washing, the dark nights but all combined in a month which is meant to be joyful.

Give me January any day!

@MrsJuliaGulia

I love May for the same reason I love Christmas Eve. It’s all ahead. August is like Sunday and I don’t love either. But better than Monday/January!
Great analogy!
redfairy · 17/08/2021 23:27

September's pretty shit with the new academic year and a looong haul to Christmas

Bogofftosomewherehot · 17/08/2021 23:36

@Meredusoleil

I agree with the OP but still find November - February the worst 4 months of the year. Darkness. Rain. Cold and grey weather. Short days and long nights. No thank you!
I completely agree with you!
Disneyblue · 18/08/2021 00:00

October is my favourite month by far.
Starting to think about Xmas. Halloween. Beautiful autumn colours, harvest, starting to feel cold and coats and jumpers are out.
Bliss.

BustopherPonsonbyJones · 18/08/2021 00:09

January is the worst month but at least it is as expected. August attacks with hope. It used to be good (in days of yore) but is now invariably cold, wet and miserable. The forecasters always do the ‘Ooh, a heatwave is on its way’ but you know it will get diverted and end up somewhere else which didn’t want a heatwave anyway.

In fact, January and August can share equal billing for being rubbish.

egglette · 18/08/2021 00:14

Agreed, OP! I remember when DH and I were booking our wedding (pre-covid back when we were under the illusion that we had some say in when it would happen Grin) we specifically ruled out August as it's always such a let down.

BastardMonkfish · 18/08/2021 00:53

July is definitely the best of the summer months, the gardens are at their best, it's always hot and sunny and the wasps haven't really made an appearance yet. In august everything starts to die a bit.

Here in NI schools are off from end June - beginning September so 9 weeks of summer holidays this year. Although I'll miss the good weather, the long lazy summer days, trips to the beach and the joy of watching our hard work in the garden come to fruition, I'm glad the pressure of such a long time of entertaining young children is coming to an end for another year.

Having said that, I know I'll look back wistfully on these days both later in the year and later in my life. I suppose we should all try to live in the moment and savour the day we're living in but it's easier said than done.

Mammyloveswine · 18/08/2021 00:56

It's been shut weather wise and I'm bloody skint a week before payday!!

^^

I'm the inverse of this! Grin

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 18/08/2021 02:35

I always loathed Feb when I lived in the UK, now I'm in the southern hemisphere I bloody love it! On the downside my July birthday used to be great, but now its the middle of winter, which sucks!

Bythemillpond · 18/08/2021 02:42

How could it be worse than June or July

All it has done in June and July is rain and rain and rain and then the wind blew so hard the rain then came down at 45 degree angles and then it rained some more

Not really turned the heating off at night as it is so cold

MeanderingGently · 18/08/2021 02:52

Quite honestly, any summer month of the year is dreadful...at least, when it's too hot. Although a dull, cool and rainy summer is better than anything. This August hasn't been too bad so far but I fear the worst by the end of the month....thankfully the nights are drawing in.....

ListenLinda · 18/08/2021 03:08

This August definately is. What a let down it has been. I’m wishing the days away until September!

1forAll74 · 18/08/2021 03:22

I like all the Months, all the seasonal changes of things.

MrsJackWhicher · 18/08/2021 03:33

@Northernsoullover

In August I get a horrible feeling in my gut. I hate the winter so much that August feels like impending doom. I'm only truly happy between March and July.I hide it well I promise!
Same here! August is always a let down and I feel another year has come to an end. Totally agree that March-July us the best -the ‘light’ months! I do a lot of outdoor activities and the humidity/overcast and/or rainy weather this month is making it worse than usual …

I can wholeheartedly relate to that August\september is like an angst-ridden Sunday night to me 🥺
Lanique · 18/08/2021 03:48

I don't mind August, I quite like the lazy hazy end of summer feeling with hints of Autumn in the air. My favourite months are September and October.

I will admit though that this August is a bit depressing. So grey and joyless.

Melancholy descends on me in Sept/Oct like Sunday evenings before school.

MrsJackWhicher · 18/08/2021 08:06

@tttigress

Interesting theory, I find my memories.of summer are generally to do with things that happen at the very start, and I am thinking great this is going to stretch way into the future. August is usually a let down.

Then you know it can only be up hill from August :(

This precisely! Had a fab beginning of July snd thought wotta summer - 2months of this…Not so much.
Arrowheart · 18/08/2021 08:09

August is shit. Long and expensive. Very expensive.

TheGenealogist · 18/08/2021 08:11

I know exactly what you mean, @SummersOverSeasideTown.

We are in Scotland so July is holiday month. Weather in July is usually better and the nights are shorter. I have noticed that it's earlier dark these last couple of weeks and the midsummer "glow" we have in the sky where it's never completely dark has disappeared.

However the very worst month is November when it just gets darker and darker and it's wet and miserable.

January for me is also new beginnings, we've turned the corner back towards the light and things are improving.

Mooloolabababy · 18/08/2021 09:02

Yeah I'm feeling that too at the minute op. We're currently on holiday in Cornwall (as are the majority of the Uk it seems) and the weather is utter shit! I'm spending money like it's water and we're only mid month! Still got a few more weeks to entertain the kids before they go back to school (with minimal cash). Would love to book our hols in July when the weather seems way better but I work in a school so not an option!

Shelby1981 · 18/08/2021 09:09

It really is rubbish! It's feeling very autumnal here already. I'm 40, I'm sure when I was little that august was the hottest month? Now, the best of the summer is over before the schools break up (in England)
