To think that August is actually the crappiest month of the year?

If you live in England anyway.

Full month of school holidays but invariably much worse weather than June and July, combined with the fact it is noticeable that the nights are drawing in.
Combined with the pressure to make the summer holiday memories and the expense of doing so.

Mix in the back to school shopping (and the amount that sets you back) and the failure of any retailer to stock enough items, and then trying to find, amongst the small selection, shoes that are black and polishable and have no logo AND that a teenager is prepared to wear.

Then the realisation of what is coming -the school runs in worsening weather, the homework onslaught, the extra curricular, the extra washing, the dark nights but all combined in a month which is meant to be joyful.

Give me January any day!

August is the most ridiculous month of the year. There's nothing on TV as they're holding back until the Autumn schedule. The shops are full of sale crap, everywhere is understaffed due to people's holidays, parents are worn out with kids being home.

It's scruffy, exhausted, faded and tired. It usually rains. September gives me anxiety due to memories of returning to school and children leaving for university.

October, November, December are the most gorgeous, cosy, warm, welcoming months of the year. January is new beginnings, February cold and bright. I love them all.

the80sweregreat · 18/08/2021 09:18

It's always been a rubbish month!

the80sweregreat · 18/08/2021 09:19

The Scottish have the school summer holidays the right way round I think !

Iamtheweedonkey · 18/08/2021 09:21

As a teaching assistant, I love August, I love the fact that I can spend time with my own children and do exactly what we want. It used to be expensive, but they are teens, pre-teen so a bit more calm and chilled, rather than the summer hols that we used to have. I like getting jobs done around the house, having late nights, long lay in.
I hate January so much, cold, icy, dark and miserable. Feb is a fab month, shorter month, flowers start to emerge, it's starts to get lighter.

Hemingwaycat · 18/08/2021 09:22

Ahh no, I completely disagree. January is bloody awful, I always feel depressed as hell and I’m always a bit skint after Christmas. It gets dark so early, it’s freezing cold and it’s just a bit miserable. There’s also nothing going on in January, it’s just like a one month long hangover from the excitement of Christmas. It’s definitely my worst month, I always dread it.

August is fine. I like not having to do the school run, I enjoy spending time with my DC (most of the time!) and the weather has been ok for the most part here.

garlicandsapphires · 18/08/2021 09:32

May and October are by far the best.
Having considered the OP I’d agree that August is a bit of a crappy month. January I like. February is salvaged by daffodils.

MilkTrayheaven · 18/08/2021 09:55

Yes, agreed mostly.

This August in particular has been absolutely appalling weather wise. Sat here now, it's a measly 18 degrees here and cloudy and raining. The heating kicked on last night!

April/ May and October are my favourite months. I LOVE Spring and Easter, it's the excitement of the summer ahead, the weather finally turned etc and the bank holidays in April/ May Grin October and the beginning of November I just LOVE, love the leaves, the colours, the smell of people's log burners when I'm out walking the dog etc.

Hate Jan, Feb and in recent years.....August.

romany4 · 18/08/2021 10:02

I'm ready for September/Autumn

Me too. I love Autumn
It's countdown to Christmas when it's September

lollipoprainbow · 18/08/2021 10:11

It's my birthday month but the weather has been crap ! The holidays haven't been great so far for various reasons and I feel guilty and a rubbish mum, roll on autumn!!

lollipoprainbow · 18/08/2021 10:12

My worst months are January feel flat and broke after Christmas. Hate November it's another January gloomy and depressing but at least we have Christmas to look forward too.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 18/08/2021 10:19

The worst month is February. The coldest 2 weeks of the year are on Feb.

Where l live it snows and we get horrible freezing sleet. Or it’s foggy and freezing for the whole month.

Lweji · 18/08/2021 10:22

I love how the big cities get empty during August. And how work is also quieter.

But I have no school uniform problems, and I can get a couple of weeks off in July.

GetOffThatPhone · 18/08/2021 10:38

August now feels like the prelude to Christmas. Especially with all the strictly bollocks and premier league restarting.

markmichelle · 18/08/2021 10:59

For us south of say Birmingham, August and September would be greatly improved by having an extra hour of Day Light Saving.
The inconvenience to Northern Counties in terms of dark mornings usually prevents this when it is suggested.

Hhhh3345566 · 18/08/2021 11:55

It feels awful because it doesn’t feel like it’s been summer ?!? This weather is so crap!

Delatron · 18/08/2021 15:36

I love May/June and July because there’s hope for a decent summer still. You get to August, glance ahead at the long term forecast. See it will be basically white cloud and average temps for the foreseeable and you know that’s it. Summer was that one hot week just before the schools broke up in mid July. How shit.

I don’t actually mind September as I have no expectations and it’s often nice.

We have risked going abroad this year from
Mid August. And I’ll do the same again next year.

We normally go at the end of July and miss the last decent weather. It’s one way to drag out summer and miss the shit endless white cloud. Though appreciate the last few years it’s been tricky to escape.

Echobelly · 18/08/2021 15:38

I was just reflecting how the weather's usually worse than June/July - sometimes even than September. Almost always 18-20C, cloudy, chance of rain. So boring!

Discofish · 18/08/2021 15:45

I like August, but no you're not being unreasonable - I can understand you're reasons

BastardMonkfish · 18/08/2021 20:00

@GetOffThatPhone

August now feels like the prelude to Christmas. Especially with all the strictly bollocks and premier league restarting.
Yeah August-December is all build up to Christmas, January-February is post Christmas winter depression but then March, April and May come and they're the best months where you can just enjoy life and Easter and gardening.
FedNlanders · 18/08/2021 20:00

Its always so humid in August. Same temp day and night. Hate it
