Facebook marketplace nutters

3 things to sell on Facebook marketplace.

One I was happy to give away- brand new Aldi pushchair bought years ago for the grandparents but never used- bit grubby from storing in the garage but otherwise in great nick.

A strimmer, for a tenner

A baby swing, £150 new, again for a tenner as the vibrate function doesn’t seem to work anymore.

Lots of interest in the swing, lady came to collect 45 minutes before she said she would without warning- I’m still in my PJs but at least she came and went paying the tenner.

Free pushchair- first of all man goes to wrong postcode and insists he’s outside. 45 minutes later he arrives, after many messages and repetitions of the postcode with him claiming to be outside when he’s in the wrong street, has a look, is happy and leaves with the free pushchair. Suitably apologetic so I don’t begrudge him.

Then the strimmer. One person asks if I can deliver- it’s a 40 minute round trip so I ask for an additional fiver. She goes quiet. Next person says she can collect at 6ish today.

Great, all agreed. Then she says she might be “slightly early”. I say I’m out until around 5.30.

She messages to say she’s coming “in the next hour” at 4pm.

I’m going out, and I’m happy to take the risk so I say I’ll leave it behind the bins and she can put the money through the door.

She messages to say she’s here at 4.45. Then she messages to say she’s “only got £10 no change. It’s my fault I’ll have to leave it” Slightly confused, I reply to say I only want £10 for it.

I get home, strimmer is gone and there’s a fiver pushed through the letterbox.

I fully accept IABU for leaving it and taking the chance but Christ this has been hard work for £15!

So AIBU to think it’s not worth the effort and it all should have gone to the charity shop who have made decent money for it?

Yeah it's a nightmare isn't it? I do get that people need to ask for delivery, as not everyone drives, but some are so entitled about it and get super arsey when you politely say you're not able. And those who persist in barking ridiculously low offers when you've made it clear you are looking for no less than x. Not fun!

DDiva · 13/08/2021 18:54

Yes I rarely use marketplace now. Thus is why I actually prefer to deliver ( within my town), you're in control.

mnahmnah · 13/08/2021 18:55

I could go on forever about my escapades with marketplace!

The people that ask if it is available, then never reply to you saying yes it is.

The people that just don’t show up, despite many messages arranging time, location etc

The people that don’t read the description and ask stupid questions

The people that arrange to pick it up, then realise you live 2 hours from them ‘LOL’ grrr

GoWalkabout · 13/08/2021 18:59

Gosh don't ever offer to deliver to the chancers. That last one was really rude.

Still1nLove · 13/08/2021 19:05

I was selling my dd’s very large dolls house. Happy to deliver locally. I was messaged by a person the other side of the river (I live in south london), I said no, sorry not possible. She asked if I could meet halfway, again I said no, sorry. I was then contacted by a lady who wanted to buy it for a local school for children with special needs, that she works in. I gave it to her for free, just glad to see it go to a good home. I marked it as sold and delivered it to the lady. I was flooded with messages of abuse from the original person about how she wanted it for her kids, I couldn’t reply to explain as she had blocked me. She then messaged me from another account telling me she hoped I died of a drug overdose because I was obviously a ‘scaghead’ desperate for the money 🙄, again blocked from replying to that account. I reported them both to fb, I don’t know if any action was taken against them

CautiousOptimist11 · 13/08/2021 19:06

I agree with all the above! And the stupid questions... argh! Sold a bllascal buggyboard last month. One woman asked 100 questions. Will it fit x type pushchair. A quick google from me found the answer, clearly, on the manufacturers website. Mind boggling. Did she think I was the manufacturer? Then another question about the size of it. Then asking for lower price, then saying she couldnt actually come and wanted me to trek to local station, despite ad being clearly for collection only. Just one example. The man I sold it to was like ... I'll take it. How much? I'll be there at x time. And he was. AMAZING.... why is it so hard for some people???!

Glad to see it’s not just me who has experienced all of this using FB Marketplace! 😆
romdowa · 13/08/2021 19:15

It's definitely not just you. We relocated in April and sold excess furniture on market place. I would honestly never ever do it again. People were crazy .

CrotchetyQuaver · 13/08/2021 19:20

I wonder if some people just do all the above for amusement? Often it seems the less you want for it the worse people are...

bought a car last week off FB marketplace, had to travel a fair way to see/buy it, he commented in our messages that I was the only genuine person he'd had inquire about it and ended up holding it for us till last Friday when we could get there. It's been everything he said it was, I've driven 500 miles in it in 8 days. He even messaged to check we got back ok. I just wish there were more genuine people like him rather than all the time wasters and pisstakers...

DeltaFlyer · 13/08/2021 19:23

I tried to sell a DVD player on facebook.
Never again!
Listed it for £10 as I wanted £5. Man offered £5 and asked for it to be delivered. I said yes as dh doesn't want randoms round when I'm often home alone on evenings.
Get there and no bloody answer at his door.
Messaged later to say that he was asleep but I can come back now. Er no!
And then I'm the cunt because I ruined his daughters visitation as now she had nothing to watch Hmm

Wtfpeopleareweird · 13/08/2021 19:24

Well now I feel bad… she has messaged saying she is really sorry, must have looked at a different one and was sure it was a fiver and she’s going to drop the rest of the money round… we’ll see if she does but she actually sounds genuinely upset! Blush

Yanbu...attracts all the flaky fuckers in the world!

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 13/08/2021 19:26

I was Selling DDs old riding body protector. A woman contacted me leaving endless 5 second audio clips and random messages, on and on it went. She asked me if it would fit her daughter FFS. Suggested she was welcome to try it on but I really couldn't say. Then another barrage of messages. In the end I told her it was sold to someone that actually just turned up and bought it. And gave it to the yard 😂

She sent me a load of abuse too

Nurseynoodles · 13/08/2021 19:26

I have had a old faded but perfectly usable little tykes car outside the front of my house for a month now.

I put it on marketplace for free. One person told me she was coming four times and cancelled each time for emergencies. One arrived on foot and decided it was too big to carry home and two said they wanted it and blocked me after they asked my address.

It’s been out there so long now, I’ve stopped noticing it.

People are strange and entitled!

Siameasy · 13/08/2021 19:27

Yanbu I don’t sell on there any more after I tried to sell an article that I had no idea was collectible and honestly had about twenty people “in line” going on and I. I withdrew it and put it on eBay in the end

AllAroundTheWorldYeah · 13/08/2021 19:28

Eek sorry, I've been this person! We recently moved out of London and some places near our new town are geographically close and therefore I assumed easy to get to by public transport, but boy was I wrong!

InFiveMins · 13/08/2021 19:29

YANBU. And this is why I never, ever sell or give anything away on marketplace. Full of pisstakers.

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 13/08/2021 19:29

And another good one - selling a cupboard and several people message "is it available". Answered all of them and sold it to the first person who arranged collection.
Then one of them messaged 5 hours later asking when she could pick it up. Said it was sold and she launched into a massive rant about how she'd arranged a van, she'd already driven halfway blah blah. I pointed out she never replied saying she would have it and it was academic as I'd sold it.

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 13/08/2021 19:31

To which she replied "you can keep it I don't want it anyway"

Never bothered with FB selling since

Siameasy · 13/08/2021 19:31

Even worse are the giving stuff for free sites.
“In line” X 100
“Oh my grandson hasn’t got any toys can he be considered” Bullshit 1
“Oh we can’t afford books can we have these can you deliver to (location 10 miles away” No
A quick Facebook stalk will show you they’re liars and I reckon they re sell the items

Wineless · 13/08/2021 19:33

Love these stories.

I sell and donate my kids old stuff and it's such a surprise when people actually turn up ! Free stuff is the worst, I once left something in our front garden for someone interested to pick up. Sooo many "ooops sorry couldn't do tonight as I'm working, will pick up tomorrow morning !!! Promise !" And the same next day. Then a week later it was finally gone and they messaged thank you.

TheGumption · 13/08/2021 19:35

Marketplace is absolute shenanigans. The number of times people have arranged to collect FREE stuff and not turned up is just laughable. I tip or charity shop stuff now. Cba with it!

Welshiefluff · 13/08/2021 19:36

Yanbu I don’t sell on there any more after I tried to sell an article that I had no idea was collectible and honestly had about twenty people “in line” going on and I. I withdrew it and put it on eBay in the end

Wait how is that the fault of facebook market place or the people who use it?

You put up a desirable item and are surprised when lots of people contact you. Well duh!

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 13/08/2021 19:39

I'm a landlord of a small flat that I rent out to essentially cover the mortgage on it

Made the mistake last year of advertising it to let on Facebook Marketplace. 182 enquiries, half of them with sob stories or admissions of "I can't pay a deposit and I can only pay a weeks rent in the first month. So when can I see it". Then total abuse when I turned people away because I had so many enquiries. Someone also told me I ruined the chances of seeing their son because he needed a flat after coming out of prison and couldn't get one if I didn't let mine to him Hmm

Spyro1234 · 13/08/2021 19:40

Honestly it brings out all the idiots, weirdos and entitled people. I check the profiles before I reply - done people you can just tell are trouble!
