Facebook marketplace nutters

3 things to sell on Facebook marketplace.

One I was happy to give away- brand new Aldi pushchair bought years ago for the grandparents but never used- bit grubby from storing in the garage but otherwise in great nick.

A strimmer, for a tenner

A baby swing, £150 new, again for a tenner as the vibrate function doesn’t seem to work anymore.

Lots of interest in the swing, lady came to collect 45 minutes before she said she would without warning- I’m still in my PJs but at least she came and went paying the tenner.

Free pushchair- first of all man goes to wrong postcode and insists he’s outside. 45 minutes later he arrives, after many messages and repetitions of the postcode with him claiming to be outside when he’s in the wrong street, has a look, is happy and leaves with the free pushchair. Suitably apologetic so I don’t begrudge him.

Then the strimmer. One person asks if I can deliver- it’s a 40 minute round trip so I ask for an additional fiver. She goes quiet. Next person says she can collect at 6ish today.

Great, all agreed. Then she says she might be “slightly early”. I say I’m out until around 5.30.

She messages to say she’s coming “in the next hour” at 4pm.

I’m going out, and I’m happy to take the risk so I say I’ll leave it behind the bins and she can put the money through the door.

She messages to say she’s here at 4.45. Then she messages to say she’s “only got £10 no change. It’s my fault I’ll have to leave it” Slightly confused, I reply to say I only want £10 for it.

I get home, strimmer is gone and there’s a fiver pushed through the letterbox.

I fully accept IABU for leaving it and taking the chance but Christ this has been hard work for £15!

So AIBU to think it’s not worth the effort and it all should have gone to the charity shop who have made decent money for it?

I despise selling things. I've recently advertised my 7 year old car that has done over 70,000 miles, people want it for nothing but also want it to have perfect body work, 4 new tyres, a new MOT and factory perfect alloys. I fucking despair honestly.

SuperstoreFan · 13/08/2021 20:44

My husband made the mistake of advertising a beer fridge on the marketplace once and I don't think he'll make that mistake again, he received hundreds of messages within half hour of advertising it but to be fair he gave it to the first person who messaged him.

SunShinesBrightly · 13/08/2021 20:55

Some people are just rude.
Items offered for free and people reply with
‘I’ll take it’
‘Yeh, me’
‘I’ll have it’
Not a please or thank you in sight.

@hedgehogger1

The number of people who've had "car accidents" or "medical/family emergencies" on the way to get stuff from me is shocking. 😝
Purchasing something on Facebook marketplace should be listed as a risk factor on insurance premiums.

Grin Made me LOL that did.

@hedgehogger1

The number of people who've had "car accidents" or "medical/family emergencies" on the way to get stuff from me is shocking. :P Purchasing something on Facebook marketplace should be listed as a risk factor on insurance premiums. Someone was due to pick something up from me this morning. Said they were leaving. Then nothing until they sent a message saying they'd had an accident
I've had two broken-down cars, and five - five!!!! - hospitalisations, preventing the poor folk from picking up the stuff I was offering for free. Terrible luck.
GU24Mum · 13/08/2021 21:00

I put quite a bit of stuff on Freecycle or a Facebook site and I'm sure I've met most of these buyers (or their close equivalents) before too!

The worst - even over the no-shows - are the ones who say they're interested, never get back to you, then complain when it's been offered to someone else. Like a PP, a worryingly high percentage of them have been to hospital with a sick child which is why they couldn't reply to me........

I do also send things to charity shops (in normal times) but quite a bit of the stuff I'd Freecycle probably isn't that much use to charity shops. I'd give them, say, good children's coats/clothes but not bundles of miscellaneous things; I can Freecycle old suitcases but the charity shop won't want them or my old car seats or bedding etc. I probably spend far too much time thinking about it to be honest!!!

I am currently trying to sell something on Market place. Loads of likes and is this still available but nothing else.
I am seeing a hardy used Remoska cooker for a lady who is supposed to collect in September as she lives about 200 miles away but has relatives near where I live and is visiting them then.If I do not hear from her by the end of Sept. then off it goes onto E bay.
My grandaughter tried to sell her nearly new bike on market place. A man rang her to say that he would like to buy it for his daughter as her's had just been stolen. He came round to view it and had the cheek to accuse her of stealing it from his daughter as it was the same bike!.This was after he had seen the photos etc. She sent him away with some choice words (she is very street wise). She eventually sold it to her friend at a much lower price just to get rid of it.
I am going to put my present item on E-bay now as have had enough.
I did have one success on market place a few years ago.I sold a slow cooker to a lady who answered within one day and paid me cash on collection.

nildesparandum · 13/08/2021 21:03

I meant selling not seeing

Facebook marketplace nutters
WeAreTheHeroes · 13/08/2021 21:05

I've done okay selling on FB Marketplace. I think the key is not to price things too cheaply as it's low prices that bring out the nutters. DP did sell a washing machine to someone literally round the corner who asked could he deliver as she didn't have transport that day. He agreed then she asked could he plumb it in for her to which he said no as he didn't want to be blamed if anything went wrong.

Yup this. ^

I was giving away half a dozen plants a few months back, and said 'free to a good home, first come first served.' With a cheery smiley ... Smile

I got a myriad of responses, ranging from 'I'll have one. Can you deliver to me? I live at insert address' which was 8-9 miles away! Hmm

to...

'I'll have 2!'

I messaged Mrs 'can you deliver your FREE item to me 8-9 miles away?' and said I couldn't deliver! Got no response.

Then I messaged Mrs 'I'll have 2!' and said 'I live in XXX Village, when can you come get them?'

Nothing. So another few people got in touch, and all 6 plants went.

4 days later (and a day after the 6th plant went,) Mrs 'I'll have two!' messaged again. 'Still got those plants?' I said 'sorry they have all gone now.. She said 'thort u woz keepin em 4 meh' (Exact wording!) I said 'sorry, it was first come first served.'

Nothing else. Eeeeejit! Hmm

Fizbosshoes · 13/08/2021 21:12

I sometimes just sell or give away stuff on our local fb page. Theres one "usual suspect" who comments on literally anything that's free, I dont even thinks she even looks what it is, or thinks about whether she actually wants or needs it. Half the time she messages again about half an hour later saying shes changed her mind. I want to say "you dont have to say yes to everything that's free!!" 🤣🤣🤣

HerMammy · 13/08/2021 21:13

Advertised a sewing machine for my elderly neighbour, brand new used once or twice; bargain at £85, can you deliver 20miles away and take £45!!!
Offered free slabs, came along and they collected all 16, later that day msgd saying we saw some timber next to your garage, can we have that too?? eh no we bought that for garden project.
Ask if things are available, tell them yes then never hear another word 🤷🏼‍♀️

Marcee · 13/08/2021 21:15

Omg.
You've just reminded me of one where I was the weirdo buyer. This was over 5 years ago.

So I bought a beautiful handmade expensive dolls house from Ebay.

The buyer very kindly offered to deliver it for free. She was lovely.

So she came to my house. I expected her to just hand it to me out of the house. But the house was quite big. I could have carried it in. But she insisted on bringing it in.

My house was a tip. I didnt want her to come in. But she was so lovely and insisted. So I let her in
Then once in she carefully unwrapped all the furniture. Explained each of the rooms and what room the furniture went in, and how the lights worked eBlushtc You could tell how much care and attention she had put into the house.

But all I could do was try and get her out ASAP. Cos I was do embarrassed about the state of my house.

I felt so bad about it. If I'd thought she would come in I would have tidied up. I gave her really good feedback and said how beautiful the house was in the feedback but felt so bad about rushing her out, especially after she delivered the house.
She probably thought I was a complete weirdo.

I've still got the house it's greatly cherished by me and the kids.Blush

OverweightPidgeon · 13/08/2021 21:15

I was selling a mirror, put loads of photos on the ad along with all measurements. A lady said she wanted it and asked if I could deliver, I said sorry I can’t , so she said she would collect it. She arrived 2 hours late ( in her car ) I handed her the mirror, she turned her nose up and said it wasn’t as big as she thought even though she said she’d seen the measurements Confused

Fizbosshoes · 13/08/2021 21:16

I put a fridge on fb free once. It still worked but some of the drawers had cracked (I mentioned this)
A person (about 6 miles away) said yes and DH stupidly offered to deliver. It took us about a bloody hour of huffing and puffing lugging the bloody fridge into the car (he had to leave the boot open) Drove over there and they had a van in the drive!🙄

SunShinesBrightly · 13/08/2021 21:17

I’ve started giving everything away to the Sue Ryder charity shop.

They emailed when they have sold stuff. They made £246 apparently.

I was sceptical but the woman in the shop said they price up/label all the items you donate and the price ticket includes your gift aid number. So they keep track of what is sold.

Lucycantdance · 13/08/2021 21:29

We moved house twice and had heaps of decent stuff to get rid of. I ended up giving most it away free because of stuff like this. Even in one of the waste not want not groups though I had people getting the hump because I hadn’t picked them to give my free stuff away to Grin People are so cheeky and rude!

In the end, found the best way was advertise free on marketplace but say first come first served. People would make the effort then to get there. I’d say I was leaving it outside. Much easier.

bakingdemon · 13/08/2021 21:30

Full of CFs in my experience. Sold a bed frame which I disassembled for easier collection, as requested. Cheeky sod said it felt flimsy! And then claimed they only had a £10 and not the £20 we'd agreed! I sent them a message afterwards saying they'd clearly never intended to pay the full amount and should be ashamed of themselves for behaving so despicably. Won't have affected them in the slightest but made me feel slightly better.

SunShinesBrightly · 13/08/2021 21:32

Definitely this. Lots of people do this on the local free FB page.
‘Come and help yourself’

Allthesefolks · 13/08/2021 21:42

I’ve not had any weirdos so far but the endless people who ask if something is available then never come back and fall into a black hold is so annoying.

Only one sob story when selling a baby swing and decided to share it on a city-wide FB sale group (I was being mean to his “poor pregnant wife” by not accepting a ridiculously low offer), learned that lesson! Ended up going to some poor bloke who’d sold all their baby stuff only to have a surprise baby not long after.

I don’t list anything for free, price at £1 or £2 then don’t take any money when they turn up. Seems to weed out some of the chancers.

mnahmnah · 13/08/2021 21:43

I tried the leaving it outside, first come first served. I was just inundated with messages saying ‘please can you keep it to one side as I really want it but can only come at x time’

Flamingosarentreal · 13/08/2021 21:46

I am giving away an item free-
Them -Hi is this available.
Me-yes . it is still available
Them- address please for collection on Sunday
Hadn't actually said they could have said item but at least there was a please

FloFlower · 13/08/2021 21:54

I actually tried to give a brand new sofa bed and chair set away to various charity shops (I had bought a caravan but didn’t want/need the included furniture) and I struggled so badly. None of the them wanted it and were asking me to deliver.

I ended up advertising it for £50 and the first person who messaged me came immediately and was over the moon.

youshallnotpass9 · 13/08/2021 21:57

My best one was I was giving away a free single bed base, put all the measurements on there, made sure I said single.

First person to come round to look at it, looked at it and said oh I wanted a double bed.

My reply was I shall just pull that out of my arse then. My partner had to deal with everything after that
