Facebook marketplace nutters

3 things to sell on Facebook marketplace.

One I was happy to give away- brand new Aldi pushchair bought years ago for the grandparents but never used- bit grubby from storing in the garage but otherwise in great nick.

A strimmer, for a tenner

A baby swing, £150 new, again for a tenner as the vibrate function doesn’t seem to work anymore.

Lots of interest in the swing, lady came to collect 45 minutes before she said she would without warning- I’m still in my PJs but at least she came and went paying the tenner.

Free pushchair- first of all man goes to wrong postcode and insists he’s outside. 45 minutes later he arrives, after many messages and repetitions of the postcode with him claiming to be outside when he’s in the wrong street, has a look, is happy and leaves with the free pushchair. Suitably apologetic so I don’t begrudge him.

Then the strimmer. One person asks if I can deliver- it’s a 40 minute round trip so I ask for an additional fiver. She goes quiet. Next person says she can collect at 6ish today.

Great, all agreed. Then she says she might be “slightly early”. I say I’m out until around 5.30.

She messages to say she’s coming “in the next hour” at 4pm.

I’m going out, and I’m happy to take the risk so I say I’ll leave it behind the bins and she can put the money through the door.

She messages to say she’s here at 4.45. Then she messages to say she’s “only got £10 no change. It’s my fault I’ll have to leave it” Slightly confused, I reply to say I only want £10 for it.

I get home, strimmer is gone and there’s a fiver pushed through the letterbox.

I fully accept IABU for leaving it and taking the chance but Christ this has been hard work for £15!

So AIBU to think it’s not worth the effort and it all should have gone to the charity shop who have made decent money for it?

People are crackers! My DH listed an almost new, used twice, power tool. One man messaged him saying it was absolutely disgusting people listing things as almost new when they were clearly well used, then blocked him! I mean who can be arsed! The bloke who eventually bought it turned up with £30 less than the agreed price so my DH gave him his PayPal details and waited for him to transfer the money before he could have it, bloody chancer.

On the flip side, I’m looking for a new dining table. The amount of listings without dimensions is crazy, fairly important piece of information I’d have thought to include

frumpety · 13/08/2021 21:59

I have bought loads of things from marketplace, always ask politely if I can buy it, if they say yes, arrange a time that suits them to collect it and show up with the right money, its really easy.

Never sell on anymore, people always wanted stuff delivering at a reduced price, I don't mind a bit of haggling or delivering stuff when it suits me, but both is cheeky !

Malibukev · 13/08/2021 22:02

I have my dds pram on there at the moment. It cost over £700 new. Is 2.5 years old. Great condition apart from marks on the chassis as you would expect. Noones interested. Put it up for £100 reduced to £90 had two messages saying people were coming for it then nothing.

Its such a lovely pram I'm at the point where I think I would rather give it away than take any less than £80.

RomainingCalm · 13/08/2021 22:10

Generally I've had more good experiences than bad on Marketplace but a couple come to mind.

I was selling a large garden table and chairs, had stated the dimensions with several photos, and the lady came to collect it in a Mini - she looked genuinely surprised that the table and 6x chairs wouldn't fit.

For the same table I also had a request for 'send a video of it working love'. Still don't know what I was supposed to video to prove that the table worked.

Oh, and the lady that claimed that her car had broken down in Asda as she was on her way to collect something from me. She helpfully sent me a picture of a supermarket trolley just in case I doubted her story.

Adviceneeded21 · 13/08/2021 22:11

I often wonder what people actually get out of wasting other people's time. I've had a few that have arranged a time to collect and never turn up.
I hate the ones that say can you knock £10 off as I've got to travel to collect it.... other people's petrol costs haven't got anything to do with the cost when selling things...cheeky buggers

Wtfpeopleareweird · 13/08/2021 22:15

Well I definitely feel bad now, I’ve just had a message to check my letterbox and there’s another fiver in there Blush

Unsure33 · 13/08/2021 22:16

Yep.

People who arrange to collect . You wait in and at 10 mins past the time they change their mind and don’t want it . Infuriating!

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 13/08/2021 22:17

oh yes, the dimensions....ffs!!

I always list the size of anything, but you are right, the people who don't! ...drives me mad

I nearly ended up with a bloody child's leather tub chair and foot stool.... who knew they even existed??
Ds1 and his gf were kitting out their flat and already had my ex freecycle leather tub sofa and this matched exactly, only it had been photographed just in the middle of the carpet, not a single word about it being child sized until I asked if it was heavy, cos it was just me collecting. FFS!

Antsinyourpanta · 13/08/2021 22:17

I had a weird one once. Messaged to say they wanted an item. Agreed time and gave address. Was indoors (in kitchen at the front of the house) the whole time.
Then got a message saying they'd rung the doorbell and noone was in (I had neither heard the doorbell or seen anyone come up the drive.) And then another message to say that theyd waited 10 min in the car outside and tried again but going to leave it. (Again no doorbell sound or anyone on the drive)Confused

cocktailclub · 13/08/2021 22:17

My experience is none of the prospective buyers can use google maps or seem to own a watch or be able to tell the time. They also say they have no change or try and lower the price as they load the item into their car. It's an experience

Phineyj · 13/08/2021 22:19

I gave up using Freecycle due to these kind of problems.

You could often use a nicely written, properly spelt and punctuated reply as a proxy for a person who'd reliably turn up.

But I gave up after getting a load of abuse from a really odd lady, who'd sent a perfectly normal initial message. It was really stressful as she'd already collected but had an issue with some of the items (which were free, obviously!) I mean great, save the planet but by letting nutters know your address Confused?

Wassailer · 13/08/2021 22:22

I have had all of this when selling stuff on marketplace but it’s have had some lovely experiences too.
I sold a lovely Art Deco side board during lockdown to a lady who messaged me after with a photo of it in her home and a story about how she is an art teacher and all her online zoom lessons are now being delivered from the side board. Made me feel all squishy Smile.
I was looking for an item and when I found it on FB the lady who was selling it had lots of my family in her friends list. We worked out that we are distant cousins and have become really good friends too.

NewPapaGuinea · 13/08/2021 22:25

People hold no value on freebies so they fuck around and flake which is why I’ll never as advertise anything as free.

On the flip side I wanted to buy something today. A set of drawers. Catalogue pics used on ad. Messaged to check they were the ones I thought they were then replied to ask if I could go and see them and nothing. They've read the message. So odd.

I really want the drawers!!,

Yesandnosayso · 13/08/2021 22:35

Yeah tell me about it. I even thought today of creating a marketplace fails accountvwith screenshots of the dramas encountered on there alone 😂😂😂

Trying to sell an Ottoman. Bought not even a year ago, just taking up too much room. Tenner, worth about £150 if bought new so absolute BARGAIN.

It is far too big, and too much hassle, to offer postage so in the ad it says “collection only from XXX”

Apart from the constant “hi is this still available?” Yes it is
**deathly silence”

Today I’ve had:

“Hello, yes I like this but it’s too far for me to collect”
Alright ok thank you for this pointless information

😂😂😂 can’t deal

Babycarrottt · 13/08/2021 22:35

I run an antiques and vintage store and buy a lot off Facebook. I'm always polite and ensure that items are collected when I say they're going to be.
I've had a few issues myself. One buying a small undercounter fridge. Someone turned up and asked me questions. It was immaculate but the model didn't have a light. He asked me numerous times about the lights and didn't believe me when I said it didn't have one. He only believed it when my partner stated it didn't have a light.
Another occasion, we were selling a chest freezer. Couple took ages to arrive and then refused to give the full amount. They told me they should pay less because they'd travelled to pick it up. I shut the door on them. They eventually had it at full price. They had it in their car and then said they'd give him less. My partner started dragging it out of their car. They changed their mind and paid the full amount.
The other one was when we sold a multigym. It was bugger all and we also threw in a treadmill and rowing machine for free. After buying it they then messaged me for days after as they said it was faulty (they couldn't put it together despite having the original instructions). Eventually they managed but they were PITA's.

This is absolute genius. DH came to see what was up with me as I was laughing so hard I was crying….
SchrodingersImmigrant · 13/08/2021 23:11

I was goving away a furniture item. Armed by knowledge from these threads I put pics, dimensions and first part of my postcode and collection only in capital letters. Only to have an exchange about confirmation of dimensions etc and how she wants which was a waste of time. She kept asking postcode and I kept telling her Xy and she will get full one if she decides she wants it (it just felt odd giving my tiny postcode to random). It turned out she lives about 6 miles away and can't collect... Which she must have known from the first part of the postcode!

AdobeWanKenobi · 13/08/2021 23:18

To set the scene. Near me is a dog rescue. It has the worst reputation of any rescue I’ve ever seen. The owner is barmy and the stories of people who have tried to adopt and been refused could fill a thread.

I decided to dogs food. He seemed ok so ordered him a bag and although not a huge bag it was still £55. He had about two meals out of it before he decided actually he didn’t get on with it and was ill. I put it on marketplace for a tenner, figuring I’d buy him a few treats with the money instead.

I had about six messages all from various rescue flying monkeys all of which were variations on “donate to x rescue address plz?”
It annoyed me. Probably irrationally. Not would you like to donate, but the absolute assumption that I wouldn’t say no. Blocked them all and sold to a lovely woman. Dog received bonios and new toy.

millenialblush · 13/08/2021 23:28

I sold my 2 maxi cosi car seats and isofix bases on FB marketplace. Advertised them for about £100 for both which is a bargain. Got a person messaging me who was having twins, she asked me about 10 questions about whether it would fit her car (and sent me the make and model of her car Confused), whether they did this and that etc. Then she tried to barter down and I said no, as I had bought the lot for about £400. She then showed up at my place when I wasn't there, told my husband that I had agreed £60 - I hadn't!! Took them and then messaged me to say they were missing a part, I had to Google them to show her exactly what it was and that it was all there! A few weeks later I saw them advertised on FB marketplace - MY photos, MY listing copy and all for £100!!

millenialblush · 13/08/2021 23:30

I’m feeling the same. Plus those who ask if still available then don’t respond.
Kona84 · 13/08/2021 23:38

The most annoying thing is when people post saying ‘free’ and then in the description put the actual price.
If I post anything for fee I put ‘genuinely free’ in the title.
Sometimes when people collect they can’t believe it’s free and try to offer money.
Had a guy collect a pair of owl ornaments asked 3 times if I’m sure I didn’t want anything for them. 100% sure.
Said bye he posts a fiver through the letter box.
They cost me 50p each at a carboot.

Also hate when I list that I will deliver working 2 miles of my house.
And get requests for 10, 20 miles away.
