3 things to sell on Facebook marketplace.

One I was happy to give away- brand new Aldi pushchair bought years ago for the grandparents but never used- bit grubby from storing in the garage but otherwise in great nick.

A strimmer, for a tenner

A baby swing, £150 new, again for a tenner as the vibrate function doesn’t seem to work anymore.

Lots of interest in the swing, lady came to collect 45 minutes before she said she would without warning- I’m still in my PJs but at least she came and went paying the tenner.

Free pushchair- first of all man goes to wrong postcode and insists he’s outside. 45 minutes later he arrives, after many messages and repetitions of the postcode with him claiming to be outside when he’s in the wrong street, has a look, is happy and leaves with the free pushchair. Suitably apologetic so I don’t begrudge him.

Then the strimmer. One person asks if I can deliver- it’s a 40 minute round trip so I ask for an additional fiver. She goes quiet. Next person says she can collect at 6ish today.

Great, all agreed. Then she says she might be “slightly early”. I say I’m out until around 5.30.

She messages to say she’s coming “in the next hour” at 4pm.

I’m going out, and I’m happy to take the risk so I say I’ll leave it behind the bins and she can put the money through the door.

She messages to say she’s here at 4.45. Then she messages to say she’s “only got £10 no change. It’s my fault I’ll have to leave it” Slightly confused, I reply to say I only want £10 for it.

I get home, strimmer is gone and there’s a fiver pushed through the letterbox.

I fully accept IABU for leaving it and taking the chance but Christ this has been hard work for £15!

So AIBU to think it’s not worth the effort and it all should have gone to the charity shop who have made decent money for it?

I had to register just to join in and post about my marketplace weirdos!!

Around this time last year I was pregnant with my little boy and we didn't have much money, we bought a 2nd hand pram for £25 and it was a really old tartan one which I later decided I didn't want and that we'd save up for a different one.
Anyway I listed the tartan pram on fb marketplace for £20 Collection only but there was no interest after a week. Reduced to £10, no interest. Reduced to £5 and I had one solitary response from a young lady appearing quite provocative in her profile pic. Let's call her B.

B: Is this available?
Me: Yes still available
B: Can I collect this afternoon please?
Me: Yes no problem the address is xxxx
B: Actually cn u deliver pls?
Me: unfortunately not as we are shielding due to me being pregnant its doorstep collection only.
B: owww ok
Me: But if you're happy to collect you can have it for free?
B: Do yu wnt rid of it tht badly?
Me: If you don't want it it's absolutely fine
B: I dnt hav any kids
Me: oh? Why do you want a pram then?
B: Guess :)
Me: I don't know? Don't worry I've got other people interested thanks anyway (lie)
B: Cn u leave it in ur garden 4 my mate 2 collect he wrks nights pls I rely need it
Me: I don't feel comfortable doing that I'm sorry
B: Pls I really need this pls
Me: it's raining though?
B: leave it in bushes wit rain cover on wil b fine hun please hun

I agreed begrudgingly as she already had my address so I leave it outside and amazingly it's gone next day

Next night at 11pm

B: Hiya:)
Me: Hello? Was everything OK with pram?
B: Yes brill thanks hun xxx
B: Do u want to have sum fun? Xxx

YANBU it is no wonder it's so hard to get anything done when there are so many flaky useless people around.

cricketball · 16/08/2021 13:15

We had someone local on FB saying she was absolutely broke, no money to feed child etc. People rallied round offering to get her £10 of shopping etc, the local fish and chip shop offered them a free meal.

She then popped up, the same day, buying an expensive item from Marketplace that definitely wasn't essential.

I've had people wanting delivery, even though I stated collection only, price hagglers, and someone offering to marry me as I was beautiful lady 😆

OverweightPidgeon · 16/08/2021 19:17

I was that person selling a chair for £15 and a very kind chap asked me if I knew exactly what make of chair it was . I googled it , put it on eBay and got £450 !

Yesitsbess · 16/08/2021 19:53

@OverweightPidgeon hurrah for nice people! That's lovely.

TheRebelle · 16/08/2021 20:48

Unless their message go like this then I block them straight away:

Them: Is it still available?
Me: yes
Then: when can I collect?

I’ve got zero tolerance for stupid questions, I put all the info in the ad and I sell stuff cheap.

I was selling a six seater table and chairs for £50, and had about 25 messages to ask for dimensions, it’s a 6 seater dining table ffs, you’ve either got space for it or you haven’t. If I was asking a lot of money I’d measure it and the chairs but I’m not being funny dining chairs are all about the same size and it’s £50.

BecauseMyRingBurnsSheila · 16/08/2021 23:12

There's a smattering of CFs on my local group and finally people have got to know their names so their CFery isn't given house room. One in particular doesn't even live in the area (selling mirror collection only from Milesawayville). She veers between so poor she's asking for free stuff to selling mirrors because she's changed her mind. I can't bear to see it. Her daughter is the same and they clearly have a double act for the asks. The worst was 'granddaughter's kitten has gone missing. Is anyone giving away one as she's heartbroken?' Que questions of how long has it been missing, have you put up posters etc. 3 days and no because she didn't have a printer. It was awful to watch and I think the kitten did finally return but 🤯

LaikO · 16/08/2021 23:26

We have a bag of toys, some fairly expensive and all in great condition, and I'm probably going to take them to a charity shop instead of trying to sell any.

I've previously listed a car, and as I couldn't enter the price for some reason, I had to list it as free but put the price in the listing like: Looking for £xxxx ONO!
Still got "I'd like the free car please, what's your address?" and also someone who said they were on their way without knowing where we live... Yes, by all means have the 5 year old car for free, why not?! 🤦‍♀️

Roussette · 17/08/2021 07:15

I am laughing out loud at someone 'on their way' whilst not knowing where you live!

I put a convector heater on for £7 (new price £30)
Guy wanted it for his Gran who was freezing to death in her flat. Fine says I, and I gave him the approximate area we lived.
Had the usual 'can you deliver'.... when he told me where he lived it would honestly have taken me probably a 3 hour round trip, across a busy city, I told him this, and that it would cost me more in petrol than I would get for it.

He said could I drop it to £5 and deliver it.

These people!!!

Wafflethefuckinwonderdog · 17/08/2021 07:28

I tried to sell a baby carrier on FB local page. It had literally been used twice as my little girl didn't like it. One woman wanted to come and see and bring the baby to check it fitted. Not a massive issue. She then kept messaging me about the weight it could carry, the different ways it could carry, if it could be washed etc. I googled all this and sent her a PDF of instructions. my husband was like why are you bothering, she has the brand name, she can Google herself. After an insane amount of messages she decided she didn't want it. I still have it in the wardrobe. I'll probably charity shop it and at least they'll get some decent cash.

Did same with a car seat a few years back. Caused me so much stress I just gave it to a friend as a spare.

I would rather give stuff to a charity shop and let them benefit than deal with CF

BooomShakeTheRoom · 17/08/2021 07:34

@Wtfpeopleareweird

Well I definitely feel bad now, I’ve just had a message to check my letterbox and there’s another fiver in there Blush
YOU shouldn't feel bad. She needs to be more diligent next time. I love buying and selling on FB but I would never expect delivery, turn up unexpectedly or get the price wrong. It's quite simple really. If anyone should feel guilty it's her. She can always resell it if she doesn't want it after all.
BooomShakeTheRoom · 17/08/2021 07:38

Regardless whether it's £600 or £50, people still need dimensions as it has to fit through doorways and awkward spaces for some people.

Would you go to a shop, buy furniture and not measure?

I find your post really odd. As if being cheap means people should want it whether it fits or not 😂

MiloAndEddie · 17/08/2021 08:11

@TheRebelle surely the fact 25 people have asked for the same information highlights that it’s actually a pretty crucial thing to include in the ad?!

Skyeheather · 17/08/2021 08:25

I had somebody once who sent me a message to say they were on their way to collect a TV without getting the address. I didn't see the message for two hours as we were watching a film. When I replied he said that he lived about an hour away, got to my town, hadn't received the address so turned around and went home again. He said he didn't have time to do the journey again so forget it! I had told him was still available but hadn't yet said he could have it.

BorderlineHappy · 17/08/2021 08:37

Then you have the sellers at the other end.
Freecycle group I'm on.
1 Never gave me the right address, messed me around from the start.
3 times I went up,I told the kids about her.
Then I got an arsey text saying she was a nurse bla bla bla.

Next people who don't open the door to you.

Happened twice so far.
I'm there,I've rang your bell.I have texted you.
No answer.
Then they get in touch an hour later and ask if I'm still "around"

DrCoconut · 17/08/2021 09:03

I had a seller give me their address and say I could collect immediately. That was fine, I went and they were out. Definitely the right place and the house was in darkness, no car on drive etc. I messaged them when I got home (this was before I had a smartphone when online selling was quite new) and they swore they were in and I must have gone to the wrong house. No I went to 1 High Street, Anytown, AB12 3CD just like you said.

Nietzschethehiker · 17/08/2021 09:04

It has got so bad that frankly I think everyone is surprised when it goes smoothly.

We needed a replacement washing machine in a hurry a few weeks ago and coming in the same month as abruptly needing a new car (apparently we have really upset a deity of some description with our luck this month) secondhand it was for the time being.

A Facebook £50 washing machine nearby. DP messaged and got an actual fast polite reply , off we trotted and got the beautiful condition machine but the seller was just as surprised that we had turned up with the right money and the ability to transport it. It was kind of endearing as we were all sort of stood there surprised it had all gone so smoothly.

He did look a bit sceptical at my somewhat diminutive self ready to help DP haul it into the car and offered to take over from me but was grinning when we promptly hoisted it up and in with no issues.

DP had a proud moment when he casually said "Oh yeah she's quite handy does things like this all the time " Grin no I don't Grin

An odd flexing moment for my usually very respectful and sensible DP but I assume it was a man thing. Apparently they are more proud of the ability to lift heavy machinery than to embroider. Not sure if that's progress or not Grin.

BorderlineHappy · 17/08/2021 09:19

Kids should be mods on that post.

BorderlineHappy · 17/08/2021 09:25

But I've had good luck as well.
Went to buy a dishwasher and the fella was using it 😂.
Told us to come back in an hour.
We did,he then delivered it as he gave us a free fish tank and a set of drawers😂

ProfessionalComplainer · 17/08/2021 11:04

I only use these sites for giving crap away for free now. I'm inundated every time I do it but saves going to the dump. I've been amazed at the old shit people want for free. I got rid of broken, rotten garden furniture to people. I had already upcycled it once myself and it wasn't worth it again. Put it on for free, with an honest description, and it went! I've also got rid of old pots of paint etc.

Honestly it's brilliant if you want to get rid of crap rather than dump it. Selling stuff? Not so much!!!!'

ProfessionalComplainer · 17/08/2021 11:07

Oh I've just remembered a story from years ago! Put my old, massive, TV on free cycle. Not a flat screen and BLOODY heavy!!!!! Stated really clearly that it was bloody heavy and would need to be transported in a car. Two uni students turned up, having walked an hour for it. They had no idea what an old fashioned TV would weigh. It also was raining.
I felt so sorry for them, DH whipped them home with it in his car!

AudacityBaby · 17/08/2021 11:16

I was gifted a huge papier-mache chicken (long story...) which I listed on FB marketplace for free, fully expecting the worst. I had a lovely person take it for her elderly mother's garden, which was decorated to resemble the farm her mother had grown up on. She sent me pictures of the chicken in his new habitat, with said elderly mother smiling wide and pointing at him. Absolutely warmed my heart, and still does.

AudacityBaby · 17/08/2021 11:24

Maybe I should create a separate thread for this, but the worst I had was posting for a seamstress recommendation on Nextdoor, as I've bought a beautiful posh dress which needs the bodice lined as I'm not up for showing my full boobs to the world. A man commented and said he was sure I'd look great with it see-through and to give it a try. BEURK.

Waspsarearseholes · 17/08/2021 11:31

Some of these are gobsmacking!
The ones that really annoy me, rightly or wrongly, are the ones constantly asking for stuff. One woman on my local page put three post up yesterday asking for a triple or double and single wardrobe, must have hanging rails, shelves and drawers and must be natural or plain wood and be delivered to her. Then asking for specific boys clothes, then the third one asking for specific women's clothes and bras, must be in 'as new' condition and be delivered to her. All for free, of course.
