To hate this!

My friend owns a salon and we were just chatting about it and I mentioned hating the hair washing part. She argued that everyone loves it and I was unusual to not, she then said they have added in a 10 minute head massage to every hair wash and she can tell everyone appreciates it.

I went on to say I would sit and have it because I would feel rude asking them not to, but I would be hating it and wanting it over because it’s uncomfortable at the sink.

So I would like to know, aibu in thinking it’s awful and actually other people genuinely really enjoy it?

Yanbu - it’s awful and uncomfortable
Yabu - it’s great and the best part

Surely it's just personal preference? Some people will enjoy it, others won't.

Legomania · 09/08/2021 09:28

I'm not keen either. Luckily at my hairdresser they ask!

HunterHearstHelmsley · 09/08/2021 09:30

I hate the head massage. Its awkward, I don't enjoy it in the slightest.

suckingonchillidogs · 09/08/2021 09:31

Depends on the sinks, some of them are so uncomfortable that I can't wait for it to be over.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 09/08/2021 09:31

I love the hair wash itself and head massage but hate those uncomfortable neck support things you have to lean back on.

DinosaurDiana · 09/08/2021 09:34

Wasn’t there a problem several years ago where the hair washing sinks were said to be causing strokes ?
I would love a head massage, but not for 10 minutes at that angle.

FlorenceNightshade · 09/08/2021 09:35

Hate this part so much! If my hairdresser tried to give me a head massage I’d tell her to stop but she already knows I hate getting my hair washed.

I don’t understand how anyone could find it relaxing but each to their own

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/08/2021 09:36

I can’t say I ever enjoy it.

Worst thing, though, when I had long hair - also very fine and masses of it - was trying to tell them not to rub it hard or massage my scalp - my hair would be a mass of tangles , and I’d then have to comb it out myself, to save them painfully yanking it out by the roots.

They never listened, so I always had to repeat very firmly - except for one (male) hairdresser, in a salon I once visited near the ILs, who took one look at my hair from a distance and told the shampoo person not to rub it, because, ‘Hair like that will go into a million knots.’

TooWicked · 09/08/2021 09:37

Hate it.

My hairdresser knows to get my hair washed as quickly as possible, I’ve told her I find the sink and neck rest really uncomfortable.

I don’t think I’ve ever been to a hairdresser where sitting with my head back at the sink is comfortable.

GalaxyGirl24 · 09/08/2021 09:40

I think that sounds like heaven 😅

DigitalGhost · 09/08/2021 09:41

Who enjoys it?! It's like someone is breaking my neck everytime so uncomfortable!

Cric · 09/08/2021 09:42

I bloody love it!

cariadlet · 09/08/2021 09:44

Personal preference; some will love it, some will hate it; some will have no strong preference either way.

I had a cut and blow dry for years and never enjoyed the wash part - leaning back at an uncomfortable angle, having to make awkward small talk. One day, my hairdresser was short of time and asked if I'd be OK with having a dry cut. It was a revelation. I hadn't realised that I could ask for that. Dry cuts every time for me now.

Acrackineverything · 09/08/2021 09:47

Hate it, I have back problems and arthritis and I find it so uncomfortable, nowadays I tell whoever is washing to get it over as quickly as possible.

CallMeRisley · 09/08/2021 09:47

I hate it. My scalp must be sensitive as I always feel like the staff lather up my hair way too hard and it hurts!

ByTheSea · 09/08/2021 09:48

I love anything on my body being massaged, including my head.

Amima · 09/08/2021 09:50

If they were massaging my head I’d ask them to stop. I like my hair and I don’t want it broken or damaged. Rubbing your hair snaps it. I NEVER rub it myself so why would I want a stranger to?

CounsellorTroi · 09/08/2021 09:51

I have never particularly enjoyed having my hair shampooed. I’m short, the chairs are too low, the sink is too high for me. I don’t mind the massage though.

Thethreecs · 09/08/2021 09:52

I've always hated it, even as a child, I was terrified to lie back, they use to put a pile of towels under me to raise me up, but I'd end up kneeling on the chair and getting my hair washed like that. As an adult, I hate the hardness of the sink at the back of my neck, the water trickling down the back of my neck, the spray of water on my face, it's just awful. I've never enjoyed it.

BarbaraofSeville · 09/08/2021 09:53

The head massage thing is weird and your salon owner friend is a bit stupid if she genuinely thinks 'everyone' loves it.

I see going to the hairdresser in the same category as going to the dentist. Boring maintenance that's necessary. Not a treat at all.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 09/08/2021 09:55

My scalp loves it but my neck hates it.

SpikeDearheart · 09/08/2021 09:55

I'd love it IF the chair/sink was comfortable, but they never are. I get pins and needles, shoulder pain, neck pain etc after a few minutes, so a 10 minute massage, however lovely, would be wasted due to the discomfort!

Evergibbon · 09/08/2021 09:56

Absolutely my favourite bit of the whole thing. I feel diddled if they are running short on time and I don't get a massage!

Good way of putting it; just how I feel.

Mxflamingnoravera · 09/08/2021 10:01

I hate going to the hairdressers and the hairwashing part is the bit I hate most. That horrid squeak and the massage is too much for me (I have misophonia and sensory issues). I tell them to wash it once and condition it quckly and no absoulutely no massage. It is up there with going to the dentist to me. But I love my hairdresser, that is the only reason I keep going, he has been cutting my hair for 35 years and we joke that we have been together longer than either of our marriages.
