To hate this!

My friend owns a salon and we were just chatting about it and I mentioned hating the hair washing part. She argued that everyone loves it and I was unusual to not, she then said they have added in a 10 minute head massage to every hair wash and she can tell everyone appreciates it.

I went on to say I would sit and have it because I would feel rude asking them not to, but I would be hating it and wanting it over because it’s uncomfortable at the sink.

So I would like to know, aibu in thinking it’s awful and actually other people genuinely really enjoy it?

Yanbu - it’s awful and uncomfortable
Yabu - it’s great and the best part

Hair wash yes - head massage - yuk No

Moonface123 · 09/08/2021 17:40

I don't really enjoy it, l am so tall it is uncomfortable for me, l had to slouch very low in the chair.
Also l have long very thick hair that seems to tangle a lot worse than when l do it myself under the shower at home, and the hairdresser can pu!l quite roughly at it with the comb.

Terhou · 09/08/2021 17:42

If we had a local hairdresser that offered head massage, I'd go there like a shot.

Apeirogon · 09/08/2021 17:44

I'm not keen but would be too polite to stop someone who started doing this Blush please tell your friend not to assume everyone loves it!

the80sweregreat · 09/08/2021 17:45

My town has about six unisex hairdressers and I must have tried all of them in the years I've lived here and they all have offered a head massage.
It's obviously a thing here!

AWiseWomanOnceSaidFuckThisShit · 09/08/2021 17:46

I hate it and everytime they put yet another load of hot water on my scalp my heart sinks because I'm hoping it's over! Fuck the head massage

Lulola · 09/08/2021 17:54

That’s another thing @Skybluepinkgiraffe I hate products in it. I have really curly hair naturally and the stuff they put in just makes it greasy and heavy, I always say I don’t want anything in it and they try change my mind.

Ive decided I’m not going back and if she asks me I will tell her the truth because she can’t be upset at me as I have mentioned what I’m not happy with and if it wasn’t my friends salon I would have swapped salon by now…. And it’s more expensive than other places even with a friend discount!

I hate strangers touching me so I avoid the hairdressers at all costs.
My idea of hell is a spa day with treatments, including a massage.
I'm feeling nauseous at the thought.

JulesCobb · 09/08/2021 17:58

Ag my previous hairdressers the seat was lie flat so it was ok. Normally no. It hurts.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 09/08/2021 18:01

Hate it too.

I know its something some people do like, but anything like that should be clearly offered as an option and certainly not done as default. Most people who are uncomfortable with that will be the same people too polite to say anything.

SingingInTheShithouse · 09/08/2021 18:03

I hate it too, along with the inane forced chit chat. Probably why I mostly avoid hairdressers

MilduraS · 09/08/2021 18:11

The receptionist at the salon I go to is in charge of the hair washing. I hate it. She's apparently trained in Indian head massage but I find it sore and worry about my thin newly bleached hair being damaged for no reason. She's a lovely woman but she's also very very chatty and I hate small talk so I'd rather a quick wash and back to the chair.

Disneycharacter · 09/08/2021 18:12

Not keen. My neck hurts on the bowl and you can get weird blood clots from it.

bakingdemon · 09/08/2021 18:13

Absolutely my favourite bit of a haircut. I don't want any of the chat though.

AnneElliott · 09/08/2021 18:15

I hate it - but then I hate people touching my hair or my head so I might not be the best judge!

honeyytoast · 09/08/2021 18:18

I like the hair wash bit, but only because it’s relief from the excruciating agony of them yanking at my hair from the root with a brush for half an hour. I recently got my whole hair coloured, it took 4 hours and I was almost in tears by the end 🤣

Happy36 · 09/08/2021 18:19

l like it, occasionally it's a bit uncomfortable, sometimes it's relaxing. Can totally see how some people wouldn't like it.

OP's hairdresser friend is odd.

Waitinginmycar · 09/08/2021 18:26

They usually ask at my hairdressers, if I am in a rush I decline the massage part. I hate all types of massage except the brief head massage at the hairdresser, I rather enjoy that

I agree that going to the hairdresser is not a treat at all, it is extremely boring maintenance.

Waitinginmycar · 09/08/2021 18:30

What!!! Never heard of this, what type of blood clots? That is terrifying (we have a lot of strokes and blood clots in my family, as an example I'd never go bungee jumping as it wouldn't be suitable.

I'd love to hear more?

DelphiniumTea · 09/08/2021 18:36

Yup, that's me. New hairdresser and I've been half a dozen times now. I keep trying to find a way to ask her not to do it but I've chickened out every time.

the80sweregreat · 09/08/2021 18:45

Just say to the salon owners you would rather not have a head massage.
I'm sure the ones doing it will be fine about it !!
As I've aged I've become more assertive to just say no to things. It's empowering.

Siameasy · 09/08/2021 19:15

I hate it but then I hate my hair and hate my head being touched at all.
What I really loathe is how they coat your head in conditioner and don’t seem to wash any of the products out properly. The next day my hair is always greasy

StripeyDeckchair · 09/08/2021 19:59

I always stop whoever is washing my hair from doing the massage bit when washing my hair as I hate it.

I usually find having my hair washed uncomfortable and the washer too rough - I do say something but it seems like they're all taught like that.

clpsmum · 09/08/2021 20:06

I always insist on no head massage. Makes me cringe just thinking about it tbh

DramaAlpaca · 09/08/2021 20:08

I always tell them in advance not to do a head massage. I can't stand it.
