My friend owns a salon and we were just chatting about it and I mentioned hating the hair washing part. She argued that everyone loves it and I was unusual to not, she then said they have added in a 10 minute head massage to every hair wash and she can tell everyone appreciates it.

I went on to say I would sit and have it because I would feel rude asking them not to, but I would be hating it and wanting it over because it’s uncomfortable at the sink.

So I would like to know, aibu in thinking it’s awful and actually other people genuinely really enjoy it?

Yanbu - it’s awful and uncomfortable
Yabu - it’s great and the best part

I absolutely hate having my hair washed at the hairdressers and, yes, I try to politely decline the head massage but always feel bad for saying no. I just feel like I’m going to faint (or worse) nearly every time. Hate those sinks!

Only one salon I've ever been into had sinks where you had your head forwards! Seemed odd after years of heads back.

I like the sensation but I never fully enjoy random people touching me. Love my husband giving me massage but would never pay for one for the same reason.

I haven't been to the hairdresser since Covid but didn't mind the massage.
Long nails would be a no-no though.
I'm surprised how many people find the sinks uncomfortable. I'm very short but haven't had any problem.
I just can't be bothered with all the faff of finding someone who will cut my hair how I like it and preferably without too much small talk.
Cutting it myself is just easier, and cheaper.

I like my hairdresser, but every time I find a nice one they either leave or go to another salon out of town or go mobile or have a baby and I then having to find a new one ! ( I don't want my hair cut at home really and have to sweep it all up etc)
Some salons have a bad vibe to them as well !
It is a minefield!!

I really like the massage but I think the method of collecting feedback here is rubbish! If she's just going on what people have said, people often say "oh that was so relaxing" or something similar to make conversation. Most people who don't like it that much, or are indifferent, are unlikely to say anything.

I hate the head massage, my shoulders and neck get really tight with tension as soon as they start, for me it's the opposite of relaxing.

AlmostSummer21 · 10/08/2021 14:56

I LOVE having my hair washed & the head massage - it's nothing like 10 minutes though!

My hairdressers had THE most comfortable massage chairs ...I could have sat there all day (if the didn't mind snoring!!)

They had a refit during lockdown, you lot have made me worried it'll be uncomfortable now 😩

Nixandwotsit · 10/08/2021 15:00

I'm with you Op, I dread having to put my head back for my hair to be washed, it's so uncomfortable. No way do I want to stay there having my head massaged as well.

@DinosaurDiana That was my first thought too when I started reading this thread...

I hate it.
I remember recently I went to have highlights and they weren't all ready so had to wait at the sink with partially wet hair for 30 minutes.
The worst one was my wedding highlights, a full head and I was at the sink for a long time while she was removing them all and washing my hair. This was a different salon, I remember I was gritting my teeth and clenching my hands and my neck was in so much pain.
I had a stiff neck and have been bruised both times. Angry
They really need to make ergonomic sinks a standard.

EverybodyIsInteresting · 10/08/2021 15:39

I love a good head massage.

I've never had a head massage that even qualifies as mediocre at the hairdresser. They are at best uncomfortable and at worst painful.

I cut my own hair nowadays...

YANBU
I don't care if I am being rude but I always say no when they start the hair wash. It seems to be the done things where I live, you can't have your hair washed without a flipping head massage. I know they mean well but I loathe them (the massages!).

QueenBee52 · 10/08/2021 18:01

Its the sinks that hurt me too... i find it very uncomfortable ☹️
