To hate this!

My friend owns a salon and we were just chatting about it and I mentioned hating the hair washing part. She argued that everyone loves it and I was unusual to not, she then said they have added in a 10 minute head massage to every hair wash and she can tell everyone appreciates it.

I went on to say I would sit and have it because I would feel rude asking them not to, but I would be hating it and wanting it over because it’s uncomfortable at the sink.

So I would like to know, aibu in thinking it’s awful and actually other people genuinely really enjoy it?

Yanbu - it’s awful and uncomfortable
Yabu - it’s great and the best part

Hate it, nearly breaks my neck. At my last appointment I lied and told her I had a neck injury so could she please shampoo it as quickly as possible. She did and I was still desperate to sit up when she'd finished.

LuxOlente · 09/08/2021 16:24

I say "no thanks" and they stop. I am baffled that randomly massaging people who didn't ask for it ever became a thing.

M0rT · 09/08/2021 16:26

When I went to a salon I used to arrive with wet hair I hate them washing my hair so much Grin

Can't bear it. It seems like a huge waste of time and i feel really uncomfortable as i don;t want to be rude. It puts me off having my hair washed at all at the haridressers.

EssexLioness · 09/08/2021 16:31

I love this part. My hairdressers include a head massage and you sit in these lovely massage chairs and the footrest goes up. So comfy! Used to hate it in previous salons though as my neck would be in agony from leaning back

Blossomtoes · 09/08/2021 16:33

I absolutely love the scalp massage, it’s so relaxing. I’m always sorry when it’s over.

Knittingupastorm · 09/08/2021 16:34

I see going to the hairdresser in the same category as going to the dentist. Boring maintenance that's necessary. Not a treat at all.

This is how I feel as well. And I view the hair washing as the worst part. My hairdresser has nice massage chairs with footrests that come up but they don’t make my neck feel any more comfortable and I hate the head massage.

BrownEyedSquirrel · 09/08/2021 16:37

Love a head massage! Best part of the hairdressers.

Happyoldbat · 09/08/2021 16:42

Hate, hate, hate the scalp massage bit. I used to spend every second praying for it to finish and trying not to scream, ‘ffs, get off me.’ Luckily, I developed an allergy to hair dye, so no longer qualified for the post-colour ‘free treatment’.

Looubylou · 09/08/2021 16:44

I always feel a bit silly when they suddenly start massaging my head. But saying that, I once booked myself into a salon for a full body massage, as I had an hour to kill in a hotel - I'm sure she did a good job, but probably thought I had rigor mortise.

GrrRightBackAtYou · 09/08/2021 16:49

I had my hair washed in one salon and it was painful. I actually couldn’t brush my hair for a week afterwards, I wish I’d said something but I was too uncomfortable.
I was speaking to a colleague and she had the same experience there, the woman used her nails to give you a good scrub. Not a good experience at all.
I’ve booked a dry trim ever since in fear of repeating that experience, even though I’ve used different salons ever since.

godmum56 · 09/08/2021 16:51

@Lulola

I saw a picture of some hairdresser chairs that could be moved, sort of like dentist chairs. I think that wouldBe more comfortable if you can select your own position rather than getting neck ache….. but I still don’t want my head unnecessarily rubbed for 10 minutes!

I might secretly start going somewhere else. I’ve mentioned things in the past I’ve not been happy about and she doesn’t take it on board - asking for my hair to be curled at the end but the hairdresser straightening it and insisting that’s what I asked for, I definitely didn’t because I showed her a picture.

sounds like she's rubbish at customer service and not a great friend either!

I hate the whole thing and go as little as possible. It really doesn't help that I have short hair!

NancyDrawed · 09/08/2021 17:02

I hated the head massage.

Now, when I am taken over to the basin I always say that I don't want a head massage to whoever is washing my hair. I used to just put up with it, with gritted teeth, willing it to be over but it got to a point where I thought 'why don't I just say 'no thank you' before my hair gets wet?' and now on the rare occasions I go to a salon, I do just that

Bluntness100 · 09/08/2021 17:03

Christ ten mins, that’s torture. I just tell mine I don’t wish a massage,

MrsToothyBitch · 09/08/2021 17:06

I hate having my head tilted back, I'd hate a 10 minute massage. I quite like having my hair washed & about 1 min of massage, tops. 10 mins would be excruciating.

Bluejeanjen · 09/08/2021 17:23

I hate the sinks and find them so uncomfortable but if they could find a way to do it in a nicer position then I’d love the actual hair washy part

Horriblewoman · 09/08/2021 17:26

I love having my head stroked and the head massage is absolutely the best part of getting my hair cut, alongside the free wine.

wonderstuff · 09/08/2021 17:27

I'll often wash my hair at home and ask them just to wet it to avoid. I absolutely hate sitting still and have explained this to my lovely hairdresser who will get me in and out as quickly as possible. I don't colour my really quite grey hair because it feels like I'm being held hostage at the salon it takes so long

Candydreamer · 09/08/2021 17:28

I wouldnt mind so much if the sink didnt dig into the back of my neck and if my hairdresser didnt get shampoo in my ear.

I always go back to the chair to have it dried half deaf as my ear is completely clogged up with foam. always the same ear as well.

Flobbertybillop · 09/08/2021 17:28

I absolutely LOVE a head massage, but they should ask if you want it or not.

Starhaf · 09/08/2021 17:29

@TheYearOfSmallThings

My scalp loves it but my neck hates it.
This!
BettyBakesBuns · 09/08/2021 17:31

I wash my hair before I go to the hairdresser and arrive with it wet. My neck cannot cope with a hairdresser's basin.

the80sweregreat · 09/08/2021 17:34

The lovely young lady who washes my hair in the salon asks me if I want a head massage. I always say no.
It's nothing personal , but my neck aches enough on those chairs they use without another ten mins having my head pulled about !!
Plus the less time spent in the hairdressers covered in a plastic apron , the better all round.

Skybluepinkgiraffe · 09/08/2021 17:35

If I want a massage I go to my lovely sports massage therapist.
I see hairdressers as a necessity evil. I've stuck with mine because she knows I will have washed my hair, and she's sprays it, cuts it, and otherwise leaves me alone. No products on my hair, and just a rough dry
She also accepts that I'll wash it to get the bits out the second I get home Grin

Yanbu!!
