Would you be upset if someone called you a jackboot?

Close family friend said the best way to describe me was jackbooted. I am upset and not sure how to tackle him, or whether to just let it go?

No, it's very rude. Just not see the person again? They aren't much of a friend.

Nanny0gg · 05/08/2021 20:08

Pretty nasty.

What was the context?

PinkiOcelot · 05/08/2021 20:10

I’ve never heard of it. What does it mean?

Recessed · 05/08/2021 20:12

I heard this on a film the other night funnily enough. I'd never heard it before and still don't know what it means but the woman seemed pretty offended so YAprobablyNBU Grin

Stanlie · 05/08/2021 20:12

My parents used to call DMs jackboots. Is that the context you mean?

Cocomade · 05/08/2021 20:13

I've never heard of it?!

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 05/08/2021 20:13

No because I've no idea what it means

nimbuscloud · 05/08/2021 20:14

I’m pretty sure it’s a reference to Nazi Germany.

blue1000 · 05/08/2021 20:14

I think it means cruel and authoritarian. I'm planning a big birthday celebration for him and had made lots of lists of stuff to to!

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 05/08/2021 20:14

Jackboots is a term for fascist soldiers.
I would be offended.
What prompted it?

notanothergoodname · 05/08/2021 20:14

What does it mean? Is it a way of insulting women who dare not only to have opinions but to voice them too?

AngryWhompingWillow · 05/08/2021 20:15

It means an aggressive thug. Why did they say it @blue1000 ???

Sparklesocks · 05/08/2021 20:16

Sounds quite a nasty thing to say. What prompted it?

Ah ha, so a WOMAN taking control and being assertive, must, at all costs, be brought down a peg or two! Hmm
LemonRoses · 05/08/2021 20:17

Highly offensive. It means cruel or authoritarian behaviour, often associated with Nazis or other military junta.

AngryWhompingWillow · 05/08/2021 20:17

Bet a MAN acting the same would not have been insulted!

WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld · 05/08/2021 20:20

Well that's easy. Stop arranging the celebration and let him sort himself out

Am tempted but it's his 90th birthday and I would feel mean.

I'm having the party at my house and said we needed to discuss guest list, food, drink, budget etc and he just said "there are two sides to you blue - one lovely and one when you are wearing your jackboots". I don't think he meant to offend but he has upset me.
OP posts:
KindergartenKop · 05/08/2021 20:29

It means you're being controlled.

SwedishEdith · 05/08/2021 20:30

Is he not just bored having to think about stuff like that and it was a throwaway line when he was feeling tired of it all? Does he want the party?

blue1000 · 05/08/2021 20:36

He really wants the party and keeps on going on about it. He's very grateful that we can have it at our house but I don't think he realises that it does involve work and I'm happy to do it for him but it needs to be what he wants. I've made some suggestions but made it very clear the decisions are his

Its not kind. I guessed what it meant. An aggressive person who lets nobody get in their way and wants to call all the shots. Is that you?

I hope not! But I think I'll just sit still now and wait until he raises the subject again. I'm not going to look at ordering food or buying drink until he asks me to.
