Grey, mustard, pink... WHY???

Went to "The Range" today as it's newly opened near me and I've never been in before. Absolute load of cheap tat, of course, but even so it's still weird that every single thing was grey, mustard yellow, dull pink, or some combination thereof. Are these three colours all you're allowed if you can't (or choose not to) spend a lot on your soft furnishings?

Bath towels, bedding, cushions, tableware, random decorative items - 90% across every single category was grey, mustard, and/or pink except for rugs - 100% of those were. not one single option in any other colour except for a couple in white.

Obviously they sell what people buy, but surely people aren't THAT homogenous?

I don't know what my AIBU is except for maybe AIBU to wonder why these boring colours that already looked tired and outdated five years ago are still being shovelled at the lower end of the market?

I guess those are the current popular colours. They won't stock loads of random colours in the off chance someone might want those. What makes you think they are offloading them to the lower end of the market. Other retailers may be stocking these colours too.

I don't think you understand when I say literally 90% of every single home item not directly made for children was in one of these colours. It's weird and creepy. And no, more expensive and higher quality retailers have more diverse options and more neutral colours.

Good grief, are mustard and teal in geometric patterns out already?! That didn't last long. Gosh, I must change my wall hangings.... ;)

You must live in a much more upmarket area than we do if it's not just the Range with the colours you mention in stock. Where we are, it's also Dunelm, various other high street retailers (probably a bit too cheap to mention in this thread) and probably even John Lewis. (Not sure if that counts as "higher quality" enough these days.)

I still remember how lilac and silver the Millennium was (yes, I"m getting on a bit), and then for a while how completely monochrome everything was (especially cars), and then how completly metallic everything went. Interior designers decide what colours are going to be in vogue, and lo and behold, those colours are then everywhere....

The Range here has sections in almost every colour, including a whole area for silver and gold too. Not sure if it’s because yours in new and they haven’t bedded in with choices yet?

how is it 'weird and creepy' for a shop to stock fashionable colours?

The Range near us (only small) has a much wider range of colours and styles - but lots of people have grey/mustard/pink décor because it was fashionable last year (or so) - so it sells.

I think sometimes they get it wrong. Most of the places that I shop for household/bedding items carry a lot of different brands so there is a choice. I find that Next Interiors are quite 'themed', sometimes I like almost everything and sometimes I don't like any of it.

I still remember when they first opened near me, it was when everything was Union Jack, in the usual colours and different colours. I went in with my friend and was so surprised that I said out loud "What were they thinking? Union Jacks in Dublin?" I went in a week later and they were all gone, because they hadn't been thinking at all, they'd just gone along with what they were told was trending.

There was grey everywhere at one stage. I do love pink or blush tones. Teal very nice too

That horrible dirty peach pink is all over girls' baby clothes too. I like bright and gaudy, think needing sunglasses to look at the baby, and that horrible drab pink is pretty much all Asda had this last year.

I understand fads and fashions but it's frustrating having such limited options in colours, be it clothes or decor.

I hate fast fashion in decor. I like my house decor to last years and years and don't want it to look dated in 6 months!

I had a huge DIY On A Budget (Facebook group) obsession about 3 years ago and there was a LOT of pink geometric wallpaper, and mustard cushions on grey sofas.

I don’t mind a bit of blush pink and I actually have a throw that’s similar to mustard but it was everywhere then so I see those colours as a bit dated now but I guess they’re still popular!

Wow, you've just unlocked the memory of the lilac and silver bedroom I had around the millennium time (I was 10, so it's allowed)! I loved it SO much. I think we should bring it back.

But yep - trends happen. Then they get oversaturated and people get bored. Then they die off again. I think the mustard/teal/pale pink trend comes off the back of the grey - easy colours for accessories/curtains to put with all-grey houses to make them look different.

Deep green and deep blue seem to have been very popular for a while, at least in paint colours - every wall on the interior design Facebook groups I'm in is Sapphire Salute! Give it 3 months and that'll be in The Range instead, OP Wink

I don’t like those colours either, but YABU and snobby to think it’s just “lower end” shops that are full of these colours - everywhere is doing grey and mustard everything. It drives me mad, but rich people are (foolishly) doing it too.

Grey pink and yellow were all the rage when I was about 10….in the mid eighties. I remember it well….I had hoped it wouldn’t come back.

Such snobbishness - colours that looked outdated five years ago.. people generally have the option to buy what is in the shop. Either they think "I really want a red cushion so I'll search for one of those" or they go into a shop looking for a cushion and buy from the range of colours available there. There's always going to be a cutting-edge of style and a time when it is mainstream. Then the next thing rumbles along.

You would hate my house, it's near enough fully grey and white 😂

Both the range shops near me stock loads of colours of items, although if you find it all "cheap tat" why bother going in the first place?? 🙄
