AIBU?

Grey, mustard, pink... WHY???

Went to "The Range" today as it's newly opened near me and I've never been in before. Absolute load of cheap tat, of course, but even so it's still weird that every single thing was grey, mustard yellow, dull pink, or some combination thereof. Are these three colours all you're allowed if you can't (or choose not to) spend a lot on your soft furnishings?

Bath towels, bedding, cushions, tableware, random decorative items - 90% across every single category was grey, mustard, and/or pink except for rugs - 100% of those were. not one single option in any other colour except for a couple in white.

Obviously they sell what people buy, but surely people aren't THAT homogenous?

I don't know what my AIBU is except for maybe AIBU to wonder why these boring colours that already looked tired and outdated five years ago are still being shovelled at the lower end of the market?

Bloody hell, the snobbery here! If it’s not to your taste, don’t go. The Range is great for garden stuff, their plants are vigorous, healthy and keenly priced. A lot of stuff isn’t my choice but there are hidden gems if you look. Why do people find it necessary to put others down all the time?

I quite like the range...we don't all have John Lewis budgets.

I imagine it was the same in the 70s with brown and orange and beige in the 90s

Our Range has a huge realm of colours, including understated white tableware
YABU. It has been a perfect place to set up our 3 DC for uni. Everything under one roof, from duvets to peelers.....

Makes me laugh that people genuinely think that shops that charge more are somehow "better".

As for using second hand towels 🤢

My least favourite colour combinations are grey and yellow, and grey and pink. Just can't stand it, and was the deciding factor when I eventually chose a brown sofa over the same style in charcoal. Grey and yellow reminds me of offices years ago. Hated that combination then and still hate it now.

My question is why is the Range selling pink penis shaped (at least the tip and a bit of shaft of) fluffy rugs. Can they not make a different non-phallic shaped rug???

The grey. So much grey. When I was house hunting a few months ago. Everything was grey. Grey grey grey. Sometimes I thought the pictures had been shot in monochrome. my new house isn't much better. Former rental = 100% magnolia!

Such a snobby thread. A towel that cost £5 dries you just like one that costs £30 does. More fool the people who pay more just because they think avoiding 'cheap tat' makes them superior.

That's so weird. I was looking at sheets in John Lewis yesterday, I remember they used to sell a vast array of colours. But now they have a much smaller pallette, with pink, grey and yellow featuring strongly.

I like those colours normally, but it was a mustardy yellow (yuck) and a salmony pink (ditto).

I didn't purchase.

Grey is just the new magnolia/beige of the 90's/early 2000's. It's not something I can get worked up about and if you're buying a 'grey' house it will paint over in any colour you choose.....
My house is most definitely not grey so I have no horse in this race BUT it fucks me right off when people belittle other's decor choices.
Not everyone has a huge budget and sometimes making a nice home for our children tops worrying about whether someone might sniff at our colour choices or where we bought our cushions and rugs.
I would hate to have just come out of a refuge into social housing and open this thread, it would be an epic kick in the teeth.

I think Dunelm is far superior to John Lewis

JL has been going downhill steadily for a while now

I think it's snobby to shovel ugly, cheap-looking, identikit planet-killing trash at people who can't or choose not to spend very much and to assume that the kind of trash in these stores is what they want rather than what they have to make do with. It's certainly not the most pressing issue out there but it makes me a little sad.

I also think that the idea that second-hand towels, sheets, etc. are worthy of a vomit face is idiotic and hateful. Have you ever stayed in a hotel? Do you understand how washing machines work? Do you really think that cheap towels from B&M that will be more hole than towel in a matter of months are the better choice than good-quality secondhand, price being the same? It's probably too late now to make a difference to the planet, but making cutesy little vom faces at the mere idea isn't going to be quite so cute when half the world is on fire or underwater.

And yes, I have second-hand towels. I have a couple of nice matching sets from a hotel supply company that I hang on the towel rails and the rest hidden in the cupboards are 30 years old, in 90s purple and teal, all just as fluffy and useful as they were when my auntie paid a fortune for them way back when😂

The grey thing is horrible. I thought that was now out. But not sure whats taken over from that. Not mustard and teal I hope.

who gives a fuck what colours are fashionable ? buy what YOU like for your home and those who think they are above the rest of society can choose their own ideas.

No need to bitch about 'lower end' some people on here sound like being up their own arses. It really isn't a good look.

Well that response has quite a different tone to your op 🤔. The first was judgy and sneering at people who only buy things in “three boring colours”.

But now you’re concerned about the environment? Nice try 🙄.

@ChittyChittyBoomBoomI absolutely don't contradict myself at all, I just expanded on what I said before- in which I did clearly say that I don't like the fact of only ugly shit being available to people who can't or choose not to spend lots of money- not having money doesn't mean you should be stuck with a pale liver-coloured sofa cushion and a grey nylon rug shaved into a diamond pattern. Assuming this is what people want when they don't have money to spend is what's snobby and classist, as is looking down on the idea of second-hand.

I can care about many things at once, is that not something you're able to do?

But it would be been a very different thread if you’d come from the angle of fast fashion being bad for the environment. Your only attempt at directing your argument to those that maybe had no choice but to shop in the range was one tiny part “ Are these three colours all you're allowed if you can't (or choose not to) spend a lot on your soft furnishings?”. The rest was sneery.

I went to a new Range in our area a couple of weeks ago and that's definitely not what I found.

@Pastrydame I definitely have opinions on what looks good and won't look like a joke in five years, but that's not really the point - the point is that there is ONE single colour scheme/style available at the affordable end of the market. I think this colour scheme/style is dated and boring but even if I did like it, you might not. Doesn't matter in the slightest, though, that's the option, that's what you get unless you can spend more somewhere else. It's not really on the famine and genocide and climate catastrophe level of things to worry about but it does make me sad and annoy me.

But how does a cushion ever "look like a joke"?
