AIBU?

Grey, mustard, pink... WHY???

Went to "The Range" today as it's newly opened near me and I've never been in before. Absolute load of cheap tat, of course, but even so it's still weird that every single thing was grey, mustard yellow, dull pink, or some combination thereof. Are these three colours all you're allowed if you can't (or choose not to) spend a lot on your soft furnishings?

Bath towels, bedding, cushions, tableware, random decorative items - 90% across every single category was grey, mustard, and/or pink except for rugs - 100% of those were. not one single option in any other colour except for a couple in white.

Obviously they sell what people buy, but surely people aren't THAT homogenous?

I don't know what my AIBU is except for maybe AIBU to wonder why these boring colours that already looked tired and outdated five years ago are still being shovelled at the lower end of the market?

I don’t think people buy it just because it’s popular, I think they see it around them and it grows on them, because that’s human nature. So they decide to add some accents in those colours to their houses. Very very few people buy things just because they are the fashion, they like them too! (Also your post sounds horribly snobby, although I may just be saying that because the range is definitely more mid range than low in my world)

"Weird and creepy"! Love it.

It's fast fashion for homes isn't it ?

If colour schemes didn't go in and out of vogue, people would decorate their homes once and then leave it that way for years, or longer. Now (some) people feel they need to keep buying new stuff to keep their look current.

If you don't like their colour scheme now, wait a few weeks and I'm sure it'll be completely replaced by something else!

I think we’re being actively conditioned too. Quite often I get a hankering for things that seem a bit out of the ordinary or original, only to find them everywhere months later. Palm print stuff was one a few years ago - thought I was being original, but it was everywhere shortly after I started thinking about it. Obviously the palm print trend was out there circulating before I was even aware of it.

I just don’t get the whole grey thing. I’m always looking at houses in Rightmove and the amount of people who have everything in their house grey is just insane. Even down to the kitchen cabinets. I have a theory that this is why depression is on the rise because people’s houses are so bloody dull!

I don’t remember lilac, but I feel like there were many years when brown, cream and beige were the colours of choice, especially at the lower end. Chocolate-coloured fake suede eyelet curtains, etc. I much prefer all the colours mentioned on this thread to that!

Not the same but I went into H&M the other day and it just seemed like every item of clothing was pale grey, pale beige, or black. All colours that make me look delightfully washed out Grin

Did you go in The Range by accident? I mean obviously you weren't there intentionally. What with it being all 'lower end' and clearly beneath you Hmm

They have lots of colours in there, not just those three Confused.
Try Primark Home if you're looking for something different in the 'lower end' or 'tat' 🙄

You went to the Range expecting what? Designer items?
I love the Range, B&M, Home Bargains etc.... I'm on a budget (piss poor) so often pick bits up, guess what? If I don't like the colour I don't buy them Shock

It annoys me that people get sucked into trends. I don't really care what people do with their homes as I don't have to live in it but when I see the waste it generates then yes, I do get annoyed. My friend binned all her duck egg accessories in favour of mustard. Not even sending it to charity because of lockdowns. There were throws, lamps, candle holders. All in the bin.

Why is it ‘creepy?’ Essentially it’s just a yellow cushion.

Is it next to an Aldi and McDonald's?
Not that it's relevant but a new one near me is the same! Sparkles too!!
I told Dp that his mum should go shopping there, she likes grey/white and sparkly shit too.
I just walked on by.
They need more colours!

There are many things that might be “weird and creepy” but the range of colours in a budget homeware shop isn’t one of them. I really hate the snobbery of describing anything you don’t like as “tat”.

Does everyone repaint their rooms and buy new decor though every time trends change? Confused I don’t plan on redecorating for years 🤣

I guess you're just way too upmarket and high class for somewhere like the range.

They stock those colours because people like it. But people on a lower budget must just be tacky.

I think the reasons is grey has been the main neutral for a long while now and they are colours that go with grey really well. I like The Range.

I do know what you mean in that colours do go in and out of fashion and it can be really hard to get stuff that isnt on trend. I always liked yellow and for a long time it was hard to get anything yellow but i noticed its croppping up again. When i was in my 20s lilac was everywhere so if you wanted bedding it was aclot of choice in lilac and next to nothing in green for instance.

Wow, you’re lovely. You deem them out of fashion in your opinion and then say this. Nice.

Wow yes you ABU those colours are what is popular now so pretty much all the shops are selling it not just the range. Very rude tbh to say/heavily imply that everyone who shops there is cheap/lower end of the market. Sometimes if you want something in particular you can find the same thing for much cheaper there that doesn't make you lower end it means you're sensible and not stupidly and blindly paying too dollar for the same crap 😂
Also there are some who work really hard and may not be able to afford wherever you deem not lower end and tbh your comment is downright disrespectful.
FYI our range stock all colour especially in towels etc so could be because yours is new but doesn't take away from your judgemental comments.

The Range is foul, why did you go?! The one time I went it was just swathes of revolting mirrored furniture and fake vintage looking plaques with slogans like "Be Kind" and "Life is about learning to dance in the rain" shite. The whole shop should get in the sea. Cheap landfill junk.

I get so down reading about trends in interiors. Implicit in trends is renewal, change, replacement, with regular frequency. It is so unsustainable. Places like The Range, Home Sense, Dunelm etc are just orgies in gratuitous consumption. I guarantee that a fair equivalent of every single item in one of those places can be sourced second hand with zero cost to the environment.
My towels (passed on from my sister) are 30 years old and still going strong, some of my best bedding belonged to my first boyfriend's granny Grin, my sofa has washable covers so still looks smart 20 years on, accessorised with cushion covers I've made from second-hand fabric remnants. And so on.
How can we hope to pass on a vaguely habitable planet to our children when we are encouraged to be so short sighted and wasteful?
