Nigel Slater makes me angry.

Just had to sit through one of his shows with my mum, who really likes him. There's something about his tone of voice, vocabulary choices and even the styling of the cooking programme that makes me want to tear my hair out.

I'm sure he's a nice enough man, but he comes across as a smarmy, self-satisfied twat. Please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks this!

I find his programmes really annoying. Man in expensive property makes ‘supper’ for himself and smugly congratulates himself on how amazing it is.

Edmontine · 03/08/2021 17:26

Didn’t we gave this exact same thread last year? Grin

I do find his beautifully produced and perfectly good recipe books very slightly depressing, though I can’t quite put my finger on why.

toolazytothinkofausername · 03/08/2021 17:26

His suppers are never simple Angry

Oh I so agree. All my thoughts exactly. Everytime he says the word 'supper' I want to scream the place down. Can't bear to watch him!
RedRec · 03/08/2021 17:26

Cannot stand him. He was absolutely vile (and a terrible snob) about his stepmother in his autobiography. His step sisters were absolutely fuming about his misrepresentation of their mother.

QualityMarguerite · 03/08/2021 17:26

I love how he has such time to care about such little details. It’s rather the opposite to me bashing out rounds like a pub kitchen but I quite like to channel a bit of Nige every now and then.

Edmontine · 03/08/2021 17:26

Didn’t we have ...

Neondisco · 03/08/2021 17:28

God I thought I had no chill. Can't imagine getting so annoyed about somone as innocuous as him.

hellcatspangle · 03/08/2021 17:28

Some low key homophobia here...

I don't see how saying "I think he's gay" is homophobic?

Lottapianos · 03/08/2021 17:29

'At least he's not Tom kerridge though who once said said something on his prog that pissed me off so much I avoid him'

Me too! He was making something he called 'man salad', which was a lovely green salad with slices of medium rare steak laid over the top. Coz no red blooded man would sit down to a plate of vegetables, right?! Butching it out all the time is very tedious Hmm

BrozTito · 03/08/2021 17:30

Im just here to see the inevitable mention of another food toff's hair fetish.

newwallpaper · 03/08/2021 17:30

@Emotionalfuckwit

He's a smug bastard. His clearing the fridge before shopping recipe and he has a fucking whole salmon or something in there. And when he pretends he's never tried a recipe before and it's worked perfectly the first time and he's filming it 🤬

Why doesn't he try making something delicious out of some questionable potatoes and wafer thin ham that has seen better days at the back of the fridge - then I'll be impressed

Yes this!

....I'm doing a leftovers dinner... ooh here's a cooked leg of lamb I've got in the fridge...

He is taking the piss out of himself. If you don't get that then you need to get on board!
Candleabra · 03/08/2021 17:31

I agree OP. I didn't mind him when he was on as a bit part of nigella, but a whole show of Nigel is just TOO MUCH.
It is the unctuous way he says everything, I can't stand it.

NiceGerbil · 03/08/2021 17:32

OMFG either he's at it all the time or we saw the same thing!

It was steak as well can't remember the details.
On and on

This is proper man food for men! Men love this stuff, men men men! This man dish is man food blokes yep yummy proper food for proper men.

I was so angry I couldn't finish my single lettuce leaf and zero calorie yoghurt Angry

(Joke obv!)

Boood · 03/08/2021 17:32

I always think Nigel Slater comes across as two completely different people on paper and on tv. I love his food, though, his recipes must make up at least half of my top ten most cooked dishes.

Correction: Man in expensive property spends all day shopping and making “supper” for himself and smugly congratulates himself on how amazing it is.
BrozTito · 03/08/2021 17:33

His recipes for starters and simple stuff are very good.

Bryonyshcmyony · 03/08/2021 17:33

His books and writing are fab. I agree he's not so good on TV.

Griefmonster · 03/08/2021 17:33

I had his books and enjoyed his simple recipes before I ever saw or heard him. He was doing quick and simple 30 minute meals before it became a gimmick and I find him very accessible. But I have to agree that I don't enjoy his programmes as much as his writing.

Bryonyshcmyony · 03/08/2021 17:34

So many of his recipes are staples in my house.

Lottapianos · 03/08/2021 17:34

Grin he's a great big twerp. Give me Nigel and his soothing tones any day

Microwaveableteapot · 03/08/2021 17:36

I've just googled the guinea pig thing and it's true. What an absolute cunt. If someone came on and said "DSS has just killed the pet we got him" she'd be told he was a pyscho and she should refuse to have him in the house. Why is everyone going on about how lovely he is?! He's clearly a hideous snob with no regard for anyone but himself.

BrozTito · 03/08/2021 17:36

The 'man food' stuff is all about selling recipe books to mamil type arseholes, that sunday brunch guy who never mentions hes from Yorkshire does it as well

Drivingmeupthewall · 03/08/2021 17:37

I love him. Read Toast 💔
