Nigel Slater makes me angry.

Just had to sit through one of his shows with my mum, who really likes him. There's something about his tone of voice, vocabulary choices and even the styling of the cooking programme that makes me want to tear my hair out.

I'm sure he's a nice enough man, but he comes across as a smarmy, self-satisfied twat. Please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks this!

He makes my skin crawl. And his demonisation of his stepmother, largely because he didn’t like her food was just so uncomfortable and showed his weird snobbery.

I do also feel rather sad for him. He’s a damaged man.

@SummerHouse

Imagine having sex with him.
Why?

So glad to hear you say that. I can't stand Nigel Slater as well. Whilst I appreciate his books and recipes, I cannot abide seeing him on the telly. He's obviously so madly in love with himself that his show(s) should be called 'Nigel adores Nigel'. And despite his annoying twee'ness, it's obvious that he's more Kray than Queen. I'd be afraid to get on his wrong side and it's obvious the grocers and vendor he features on his show don't like him either.

I saw the stage version of Toast, it was scrummy, they fed us treats all the way through, little lemon meringue tarts, sweeties and a walnut whip to finish. And cooked on stage, though I didn’t fancy it because it it was mushrooms. Mind you the story about walnut whips in Toast is enough to put you off them for life.

I make his Christmas cake recipe every year.
It's amazing

Me too, the small Christmas cake one with special fruit, it is gorgeous.

Semi ripe zombie thread, thought it sounded familiar.

I find him hard to watch, all day preparations of 'supper', but I find most chefs unbearable, he's not dissimilar to Nigella.

RunAwayTurnAwayRunAwayTurnAway · 01/10/2022 08:31

I love him. I find him and Nigella similar.

I really like him. Loved his autobiography. Sorry.

^^This.

Love his food
Love his books
Absolutely adore his house
Never seen him on telly
Someone had a dig about London - I believe the beautiful house is in Oxfordshire.

FamilyTreeBuilder · 01/10/2022 09:11

I don't like his approach as I think it encourages food waste.

Just buy loads of what you fancy, in the hope it'll somehow be cobbled together into some sort of edible meal.

kingtamponthefurred · 01/10/2022 09:48

I love his kitchen and the multifold doors, but don't understand why he never sits down to eat.

NiqueNique · 01/10/2022 10:00

It really doesn’t encourage food waste as his style of cooking means you would easily use it all up. However I suppose it doesn’t suit all styles of planning/food buying/cooking.

I love his books and have many of them. Still need to buy a few to complete my collection, though! I don’t watch his programmes anymore as I don’t have any television channels/subscriptions, but I loved the aesthetic when I did used to watch them. I follow him on Instagram and absolutely love his home and his garden.

It’s almost time to dig out The Christmas Chronicles (it starts on Nov. 10th) and I’m really looking forward to it. Such a lovely book.

That's what I do. I sometimes need to be creative with the 'back of the fridge' food. Zero food waste.
