Just had to sit through one of his shows with my mum, who really likes him. There's something about his tone of voice, vocabulary choices and even the styling of the cooking programme that makes me want to tear my hair out.

I'm sure he's a nice enough man, but he comes across as a smarmy, self-satisfied twat. Please tell me I'm not the only one who thinks this!

@NoProblem123

It’s his food parcels in brown paper & string I can’t bear.

Where does he shop ? The 1800’s ?

Yes I absolutely cannot relate to a life where my cheese/chicken breasts/ham is wrapped in brown paper and tied with string. I have kids and I'm on a budget...I don't do my weeks food shopping in an artisan Italian deli...sadly

He's awful on TV, it's so uncomfortable to watch him trying to appear relaxed. Him standing there to miserably eat his supper for one, him gliding around his kitchen pulling potatoes out of the sideboard and greaseproof packages of everything from the fridge as if it's the 1940s, the excruciating conversations with his 'friend' the local butcher etc. And he needs to wash his hair 😬

Tbf i don’t watch his programmes and haven’t in years, but I read his books. It doesn’t at all bother me that he has way more money than me and hence lives a vastly different life...

I hate the word 'supper' used by grown people at the best of times. Makes me cringe. Ditto 'pudding' he says both. He also has slightly shaky hands and a silly slow motion way of stirring things. He puts me on edge and I don't know why.
His recipes are ok though and his books are great.

Broadly felt the same OP until I watched his travel/cookery show where he travelled around the Middle East. He had genuine warmth and empathy with the people he met and cooked with including being a good guest. Basically he had good manners and it changed my mind.

Completely agree about his smarmy manner and his leftovers. Eurgh. I like his recipes as long as I don’t watch them on tv.

I want to like him, I want to like his food but I find him very irritating - especially watching him eat his own food, listening to him bang on about local produce, pretending he needs to budget - and his recipes are bloody dull.

I say supper and pudding. I cringe a bit at tea and dessert.

What on earth is wrong with supper and pudding?

Nigel’s lovely, his programmes are like a warm hug of loveliness.

Supper is the meal you have in the evening, unless either (a) you are 4 years old and have tea, or (b) you are having a fancy / more formal meal in which case it is dinner.

Pudding is the sweet thing you have after supper / dinner. Unless you are eating an Angel Delight in 1978, in which case it might be desert.

I cringe when Nigella says supper - it sounds so try hard.

I think you got things a bit mixed up - try replacing a few you's with I's....you do what you like, call things what you like - don't tell other people what to call things - it makes you sound like a nightmare.

He's fab. His Kitchen Diaries books are what I reach for when I need comfort on a sleepless night. His recipes always work too.

I thought he was with James Thompson - he certainly gets a lot of mentions in his books....

He hugely over-annunciates his sentences which bugs me. Plus he may be keeping the Kilner jar industry afloat by placing every single item he owns in one.

The only chef I frequently imagine having sex with is Marcus Wareing 😍

I get him mixed up with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall Blush I love Hugh's statement though 'We fall into two broad categories: those who care about food and those who don't'. ❤️

He has a wonderfully calming way about him.

Don't love him on TV, but like a couple of previous posters, a couple of his books really introduced me to cooking and are still favourites today.

I used to live around the corner from him. The local shops there are just gorgeous. He was always polite and friendly.
