To think Laurel Hubbard should not be competing against other women

I know I am going to get ripped apart for this. Smile

I have no problem with the transgender community, that is your life/body and I am not one to judge anyone else, do what makes you happy.

There is something fundamentally wrong about a person who is biologically a man competing against a woman in sport as significant as weightlifting.
I am not taking anything away from women weightlifters, however when competing in that sport, a person who was born a man will always have an unfair advantage over a woman.

I am all for equal rights but it seems political correctness has now put us in a position that we will only consider the equal rights of those in the transgender community. What happens to the equal rights of all the other women who have worked extremely hard to get to the olympics who should be competing against biological women.

There needs to be clearer cut criteria on entrance requirements to every sport, to give every person the equal rights they deserve.

My heart goes out to all the other women competing who I’m sure must be somewhat disheartened about their chances of success now they are competing against a biological man. Sad

How on earth is there any possibility/justification of 102 different genders? Confused

Artichokeleaves · 31/07/2021 15:42

Women wanting the right to competitive male-free sport to not be thrown over = demanding 'absolute fairness to the nth degree' - a choice of phrasing that makes it clear the speaker finds it ridiculous and unreasonable.

Misogyny on crack.

Polkadotties · 31/07/2021 15:51

Imagine what it must be like now to have a young girl who shows promise and talent at a chosen sport. Would you encourage them, support them, tell them to dream big. Or just not bother as by the time they are old enough they will be competing with mediocre men and will never stand a chance.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 31/07/2021 15:53

People, please educate yourselves before posting.

Ah, this tells me that you are a highly educated person whose opinions are 100% fact, so the women speaking here should shut up and obey you.

Ooops, rolled my eyes so far I think one has fallen out ….

ElCaMum · 31/07/2021 15:53

@notagermannoun in all the articles it’s saying Quinn is the first openly trans athlete to compete in the olympics and they themselves stated it that way on their insta account.

ElCaMum · 31/07/2021 15:57

Ignore me, just realized she identifies as non-binary 🤦🏼‍♀️

beastlyslumber · 31/07/2021 16:05

@ElCaMum

LH shouldn’t be competing in the women’s category and the Olympics aren’t even consistent with their decisions around trans people. There is an openly trans person playing football for the Canadian team, except they are biologically female so on the women’s team.
That's fine. No problem with trans people competing with their biological sex. It's not about wanting to exclude trans people, although tbh if you're an athlete you might have to decide not to pursue medical transition if you want to stay competitive. If LH was good enough to compete in the men's team, have at it. It's the CHEATING that pisses me off.
GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 31/07/2021 16:10

I do so lurve the assumption that the little womens iz too stoopids to fink for demselfs.

Did you mean to be so rude? I've been 'educating myself' on this topic for about five years now, and nothing I have discovered has caused to me think that a bloke can magically turn into an actual woman.

Mulletsaremisunderstood · 31/07/2021 16:21

@sst1234

This whole situation did getting so crazy that it sometimes feels like there is a sinister undertone to the militant imposition of transgender agenda. Something is going very very wrong. When a woman is raped, men have no difficulty in identifying the subject as a woman. When a woman is kept from an education, maternity rights, again no difficulty in identifying the gender. Everytime a woman gets a raw deal and something is taken from her, she is easily distinguishable - no debate. But when it comes to protecting and re-instating or retaining a woman’s rights, there is all of a sudden so much debate about ‘what is the woman’. Insulting. Everyone knows what a woman is, the only people having this debate are simply exercising their hidden misogyny and have an agenda. Don’t hide behind the progressive narrative, admit it, you have agenda.
Yes, exactly. All the 'progressive' woke bros on twitter who gleefully harass women for speaking about this, then log of twitter and log onto pornhub, they sure as hell know what a woman's body is then!

The whole reason it has got this far is because it benefits men and disadvantages women and girls. Men in women's spaces, men winning women's awards. We're just supposed to shut up and take it.

That is why there is such hand wringing and 'it's complicated'.... it's not complicated, it's actually very simple, human beings cannot change sex. Until very recently this was not a controversial statement.

But the horror of not giving men exactly what they want leads to all this madness.

Thank you OP for starting this thread, especially in AIBU. If it helps show one more woman what is really going on then it will be worth it.

As for what to do about it? Get angry and keep talking about it, to your friends, family, elected representatives. There was a lot that went on behind the scenes to make this happen, governments all over the world have been lobbied in secret about this, I think the activists then wanted to present it as fait accompli before women got wind of what was going on.

If you are in England, keep fighting back against the proposed Self ID law. Here in Ireland it has already been introduced by stealth and has led to male rapists in women's prisons. I hope we can repeal it, but it will likely take years.

BlueLobelia · 31/07/2021 16:24

male rapists in womens prisons in England too.

But it's all about the feelz

Mrsorganmorgan · 31/07/2021 16:41

Just been "piled on" on Twitter. My own fault for getting involved. They just don't believe anything that goes against the belief that TWAW and they called me cis. Is cis a made up word?

Follow the money. Have a read of this:

JulesJules · 31/07/2021 16:45

Obviously YANBU, OP

There has been quite a lot about this on twitter. I did not know that
if Hubbard was competing in the mens competition, Hubbard would be in the 109+ kg class, but is competing in the 87+kg category because that's the heaviest female class.

speakout · 31/07/2021 16:54

Is cis a made up word?

No has some classical roots- Romans called military marches on one side of the Alps " Transalpine", the other side was called the Cisalpine.
The terms Cis/Trans are also used in chemistry- a way to describe molecules that are similar but a mirror image of each other- like a left and right hand.

FluffyBattleKitten · 31/07/2021 16:55

Cis is Latin I believe, 'the same side as', trans 'the opposite side as'.

People who believe in cis believe that women have a gender identity that matches their sex. How they know this can't be explained well without stereotypes unless you look at it like an article of faith, a formless feeling.

Feminists feel cis misgenders them because it implies women happily align with the stereotypes or 'gender' that has been historically used to oppress us.

It's regularly used as a way to dismiss opinions in the way that being a white male has in recent years.
It turns the oppressed class(women) into the oppressors. Isn't that convenient.

The fallout is women must accept male bodied rapists in their prisons and male bodied athletes in their sports, because these males are more oppressed.

speakout · 31/07/2021 16:56

Sorry posted twice!

Theeyeballsinthesky · 31/07/2021 16:58

The use of cis implies that there are two types of women - cis women who were born female & trans women who were born male but identify as female. Cis women are a subset of women which also includes men. This is of course nonsense

There is only one type of woman, an adult human female

speakout · 31/07/2021 16:58

Yes -because he word "woman" is perfectly adequate to describe an adult female human.
I am not a flavour of woman, I am a woman.

Mrsorganmorgan · 31/07/2021 17:02

Thank you very much for the information speakout. I didn't know that.
I was also told that I had dementia and a rubbish education. I told them that I went to a Grammar School.

AlfonsoTheMango · 31/07/2021 17:04

I take my hat off to Ms Hubbard for being a credible medal contender at the age of 43, breaking the mould like that really takes some balls.

I agree that what Hubbard is doing really takes some balls but disagree with the rest of that sentence.

Blibbyblobby · 31/07/2021 17:29

Feminists feel cis misgenders them because it implies women happily align with the stereotypes or 'gender' that has been historically used to oppress us.

And also because saying Women is a mixed-sex group that subdivides into trans (male) and cis (female) is saying that Woman isn't a body type but a mentality that is typically found in female people but can also be found in male people.

Given just how often the disempowerment of women is justified by men on the grounds that women are simply not mentally equipped to be equal with men, you don't have to think about it very hard to see why Feminists disagree vehemently that men and woman have innately different mentalities.

Jorriss · 31/07/2021 17:37

And it others women, making them a subset of their own sex class in order to be inclusive to males. Just no.

Rheia1983 · 31/07/2021 17:39

YANBU. What the IOC is doing in the name of inclusion is bonkers. LH and NZ are acting shamefully.

silentpool · 31/07/2021 17:41

I find this a travesty. I'm not even bothering with the Olympics this time.
