"Massive salad"

Sparklfairy · 31/07/2021 06:57

I see it here all the time, it's the new mythical mumsnet chicken I think. In the recent lovely (and not so lovely) weather I've been eating a lot of salad, but I really want to know what other people think is a 'massive salad'.

So, AIBU to ask when you make a massive salad what you put in it and how much??

Oops forgot to mention tomatoes. Little sweet cherry ones cut in half.

GalaxyGirl24 · 31/07/2021 19:51

Spinach
Lettuce/Lambs Lettuce/Rocket
Cucumber
Tomato
Feta or Cheddar
Sweetcorn
Orzo, pasta or Giant couscous cooked in stock
POTATO SALAD IN BIG PROPORTIONS
Dressing (usually homemade creamy based)

Sometimes I will add meat such as tuna, ham or if I've been especially prepared pulled pork but that is rare as we've been trying to eat a lot less meat....

Tiredanawfullot · 31/07/2021 20:01

Usually a selection of:

  • lettuce
  • couscous
  • cold meats and/or cold fish
  • croutons
  • grated carrots
  • feta or mozzarella
  • hard boiled egg

Chips
Beans
Cheese
Sprig of parsley (optional)

My basic quick large salad for which I always have the ingredients I have in large glass bowl which I half fill with ice berg lettuce then tomatoes, cucumber, white cabbage, feta cheese, red pepper and cold chicken or cold gammon. With a simple french dressing with added mustard.

I make potato, lentil and carrot salads quite often but each of those require more prep.

FangsForTheMemory · 01/08/2021 00:43

@midsomermurderess you get grated carrot on just about every mixed salad in France or Italy. HTH.

Strokethefurrywall · 01/08/2021 00:53

Spinach or mixed leaves
Arugula
Fresh mint
Sweetcorn
Red onion
Purple cabbage
Shredded carrot
Walnuts/sliced almonds/pumpkin seeds
Feta cheese
Avocado (sometimes)
Roasted cauliflower
Quinoa or brown rice (sometimes if I’m eating grain)
Falafel/grilled steak/chicken tikka
Red wine shallot dressing

My salads are giant, I eat them most days.

Give me a regular garden salad and I’ll turn my nose up though. Bland as fuck.

Bluntness100 · 01/08/2021 06:59

So what makes a salad a salad

A salad is a dish which comprises mainly raw or cooked veg. As witnessed by everyone’s ingredients list.

Kalvinette · 01/08/2021 09:07

I would say other ingredients can be cooked (pasta, egg, lardons) but the vegetables need to be raw for a salad to be a salad.

SheABitSpicyToday · 01/08/2021 09:10

My fave salad is:

Pea shoots
Rocket
Spinach
Plum tomatoes
Cucumber
Sugar snap peas
Tenderstem broccoli
Red peppers
Olives
A whole baked goats cheese
Garlic oil
Coriander
Roasted figs
Pomegranate

I can rarely be assed to make it and it’s not at all healthy but it’s sooooo good.

But potato salad 😁
Kalvinette · 01/08/2021 09:14

@SchrodingersImmigrant
That occured to me but....is a potato REALLY vegetable? 🤔

SchrodingersImmigrant · 01/08/2021 09:16

Hmmmmmm 🤔

In my world, yes. 😁

RhonaRed · 01/08/2021 09:16

Cooked and cooled then, with a dressing to show their new role as salad!

What about pasta salads or rice salads?
SchrodingersImmigrant · 01/08/2021 09:18

Hot salads are lovely too🙈

Kalvinette · 01/08/2021 09:18

@SchrodingersImmigrant
😁 I put them in the bean category, emotionally.

RhonaRed · 01/08/2021 09:24

Hot salad?
Honestly I'll never understand salad.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 01/08/2021 09:31

Hmmm. Like a simple sweet potato, kale, french beans, topped with feta, pomegranate molasses and seeds😍

Bluntness100 · 01/08/2021 09:34

What about pasta salads or rice salads?

Well I’m not really the salad guru but isn’t the answer obvious? It’s pasta or rice with veg ans served cold. Often with other stuff like chicken etc

Nit sure I’ve ever had a hot salad,😂

SchrodingersImmigrant · 01/08/2021 09:38

It appears they are cold warm salads, going by bbc wrbsite. Sorry😁

RhonaRed · 01/08/2021 09:42

I'm retrenching in fear of the unknown now:

salad is a bit of pale lettuce, three slices of cucumber and half a tomato.🥬🥒🍅

catinboots21 · 01/08/2021 09:47

@TheVolturi

Not like when I was in Greece many moons ago, and ordered the tomato salad, and it came as, just a plate of sliced tomatoes with olive oil drizzled on 🙄
That's what a tomato salad is
catinboots21 · 01/08/2021 09:48

@category12

*I'm all like Khaby Lame about that Tupperware?

@BikeRunSki

I have a “massive salad” a few times a week for lunch.

Typically - base on leaves, maybe a while little Gen lurtyucrvof hskd an iceberg; a handful of spinach; a beetroot sliced up; 3 inches of cucumber chopped into chunks; about 5 cherry tins, 5 or 6 olives,,2 or 3 mushrooms, a grated carrot. Then maybe a hard boiled egg; or some tuna; or 2 or 3 fallafels.

This sounds fabulous.
