"Massive salad"

Sparklfairy · 31/07/2021 06:57

I see it here all the time, it's the new mythical mumsnet chicken I think. In the recent lovely (and not so lovely) weather I've been eating a lot of salad, but I really want to know what other people think is a 'massive salad'.

So, AIBU to ask when you make a massive salad what you put in it and how much??

@forfucksakenett, it’s usually just what I have in the fridge!

Ninkanink · 01/08/2021 10:28

I love a warm salad!

FamishedAtAnAirport · 01/08/2021 11:54

@Bluntness100

What about pasta salads or rice salads?

Well I’m not really the salad guru but isn’t the answer obvious? It’s pasta or rice with veg ans served cold. Often with other stuff like chicken etc

Nit sure I’ve ever had a hot salad,😂

I totally agree with what a pasta and rice salad is, it just doesn't fit the description of 'mainly raw or cooked veg'.

Which is why defining what a salad is, is so very difficult!

Massive salad Fans on Instagram should follow ‚frenchfamilyfood‘ on there. She is the queen of massive salads! Awesome salads there!

@Bluntness100

So what makes a salad a salad

A salad is a dish which comprises mainly raw or cooked veg. As witnessed by everyone’s ingredients list.

@Bluntness100 That describes every vegan meal I’ve ever eaten.

Living alone I go fir simple meals do several nights a week I have a salad for dinner.

It could be one of the following and other variants:
-chicken Caesar

  • chilli salmon Caesar

Like the idea of some other peoples recipes. Thanks!

@Savannahnanana

Lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, spring onions, peppers, feta cheese, chicken pieces, beetroot, grated carrot, sweet corn, croutons, crispy bacon, Cous Cous, coleslaw and maybe some mixed beans in vinaigrette dressing.

That sounds amazing 🤩

Lookingoutside · 01/08/2021 14:16

Whole bag of leaves with a whole small avocado, feta cheese, cherry tomatoes, courgette ribbons with olive oil and lemon juice.

mrsbyers · 01/08/2021 14:30

A salad can be massive IMO , a place I go to does a ham salad and I can never eat more than half of it so I ask for a box to take home.
A cobb salad on holiday is similar , think it’s perception that salad is just a bunch of lettuce when infact it can have a lot of protein which is filling

Lachimolala · 01/08/2021 14:42

I’m partial to a watermelon and feta salad or chicken and grilled peach. I just make enough for 6 people and eat the whole thing Grin

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/08/2021 14:49

I love a properly made caeser salad with anchovies and good croutons plus top quality parmesan

Lookingoutside · 01/08/2021 14:53

catinboots21 Your Greek tomato salad sounds delicious.

OP your comment about Secret Eaters reminded me of the one that made an impression on me. A lady who “ate salad all the time!” And it transpired that she was using an amazing amount of tahini on it. Like I forget just how much but I was in awe and imagined that it tasted amazing (probably because it was 1k+ calories Grin)

I have a massive salad pretty much every day. What goes in it depends on whether or not I’m trying to lose weight. I don’t see salad as a weight loss food necessarily; as many people have pointed out, they can be quite calorific. However, they’re easy to convert to something lower calorie. Lower calorie ones tend to be: lean meat (usually chicken I’ve marinated and roasted) or hard boiled egg, maybe 40gr hummus, a measured amount of vinaigrette, various leaves and veg. Higher calorie one might have cheese as well, or seeds, bacon, etc. I love salad.

Also you’ve got to have a nice dressing, I am always disappointed when a salad in this country is served with nothing, just leaves. No wonder so many people don’t like salad.

Lookingoutside · 01/08/2021 15:54

@cakewench

I’m with you on the dressing. I always have full fat Caesar or blue cheese. I find my salads come out at around 600 calories, there’s room for cheese, avocado and dressing because there’s no bread and not much, if any meat.

Arsebucket · 01/08/2021 15:59

My mums idea of a massive salad was lettuce and tomato with a whole carton of potato salad, a carton or coleslaw, shit load of pasta, eggs and sometimes a jacket potato on the side. Then she would moan that she couldn’t lose weight and that she was “only eating salads.”

Arsebucket · 01/08/2021 16:00

of and grated cheese. All the grated cheese.

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/08/2021 16:35

I adore blue cheese dressing, I make my own and it's amazing.

Lookingoutside · 01/08/2021 16:56

@IHaveBrilloHair

Would you be willing to share the recipe on here? I would love to make my own.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 01/08/2021 17:10

Oh... a proper salad thread, I'm so impressed with some of these. I'm going to read through it properly now with a pen and paper to take notes.

I'm particularly interested in the 'white salad', aka Russian salad as we make this for Christmas Eve (along with a million other things) but it's been re-named as Italian salad for some inexplicable reason.

Our family's Italian salad has (everything in tiny cubes) - onions, gherkins, sliced ham, tinned carrots, boiled potatoes, tinned peas - maggi dressing/mustard/hot water - and shitloads of mayonnaise.

It gets mixed in a storage box, it's the most enormous salad! Grin
