"Massive salad"

Sparklfairy · 31/07/2021 06:57

I see it here all the time, it's the new mythical mumsnet chicken I think. In the recent lovely (and not so lovely) weather I've been eating a lot of salad, but I really want to know what other people think is a 'massive salad'.

So, AIBU to ask when you make a massive salad what you put in it and how much??

Haha I wonder this every time I see someone write it! It winds me up for some reason, I'd love to know what constitutes a massive salad

Tbh unless people put weight of ingredience, I too am not sure😂 I can say 30 things go into my salad, but it doesn't mean it's huge. 🤔
NotMyCat · 31/07/2021 15:51

Mine are usually like this
So a bag of salad leaves (think they're 85g)
Cucumber (1/4)
Cherry tomatoes (maybe 8-10)
As many gherkins as acceptable Grin
Spring onion
Sometimes mixed grains
Chicken and bacon or feta and bacon
Everything bagel seasoning

Lettuce
Tomato
Cucumber
Lemon

Onion bhaji
Chicken vindaloo
Pilau rice
Keema naan
2 cans of lager

A massive salad in the MN context is not a main meal salad.

A massive salad is what is served with the leftover MN magic chicken to indicate healthiness. A massive salad is served alongside main meals

And anyway surely a dinner plate sized salad is just a normal salad? In my eyes its got to be bigger than a regular salad to make it massive.

Was anyone ever around in the YouTube raw vegan days? They would literally make entire massive mixing bowls of chopped up raw veg covered in blended avocado and cashew nuts. Thats what I picture when someone on MN serves a massive salad.

EvenRosesHaveThorns · 31/07/2021 17:08

A salad with so much dressing and croutons that it's equivalent in calories to burger and chips

Derbee · 31/07/2021 17:22

We’re having fish and a “massive salad” tonight. Bag of interesting leaves, cucumber, radish, spring onions, little tomatoes, fresh coriander, fresh mint, pomegranate seeds. Balsamic dressing

RhonaRed · 31/07/2021 17:25

I used to have what can only be called token salad.
I'm now reforming (slowly) and have got to half the dinner plate.
If I make it to whole plate or bowl, I'll call it massive.

MasterBeth · 31/07/2021 17:32

People are having roast chicken, potatoes, prawns, grilled fish, baked halloumi, sliced duck, grilled peaches, warm crusty bread, ham and boiled eggs in their salads.

So my question is, what makes it a salad, and not just “dinner”?

hopingforabrighterfuture2021 · 31/07/2021 17:37

My favourite ‘massive’ salad that I regularly have for lunch is:

Lettuce
Cherry tomatoes
Cucumber
Olives
Reduced fat coleslaw
Small chunk of cheese chopped up
Chilli and paprika prawns

Sometimes I leave out the cheese or swap the prawns for cold sliced beef or ham.

An amazing salad. Try this. You need 5 ingredients. You have to chop everything super small. Bag of flat leaf parsley; bag of mint; (or great if you can grow these), a whole Cucumber diced up tiny; 2 bags of the small/cherry tomatoes (cheaper brand is ok) diced up; half large jar of chopped up. Chop all up. Season. Put in big glass bowl. Lovely as a side. Great with poached eggs next morning.

KittenKong · 31/07/2021 17:52

That’s my salad!

Bluntness100 · 31/07/2021 18:06

Ehrm it is both salad and dinner, or salad and lunch. Just like sausage and mash is,

IHaveBrilloHair · 31/07/2021 18:17

Massive salad is MN summer food.
Winter is "huge pile of steamed veg" WinkGrin

yellowrosette · 31/07/2021 18:26

What is the last ingredient? Think it was missed off accidentally! Genuinely interested to know aa I prefer side salady type salads. Smile

yellowrosette · 31/07/2021 18:28

Sorry that was to @SVlover

A dinner plate sized salad rather than side plate sized. I have a base of the normal green salad bits - lettuce, cucumber, tomato and then I’ll add usually some combination of grated carrot (which I do in my food processor, SO much easier), sweetcorn, olives, hummus, falafel, butter beans, chickpeas, mixed beans, avocado, sunflower seeds, spring onions, pine nuts, tabbouleh, cold pasta, couscous, giant couscous, bulgur wheat….

CliffordMystery · 31/07/2021 18:49

I never use the expression “massive salad” but do like a combination of: lettuce leaves, cherry tomatoes, pizza express dressing, black pudding, bacon, roasted cauliflower, croutons and homemade pea purée.

HeronLanyon · 31/07/2021 18:50

masterbeth a very good question !
For me to be a ‘salad’ (lets take a large dinner salad rather than a side salad) it needs to be -

  1. More veg than other non vegetable things. Except for melon/watermelon and feta/halloumi or similar where fruit could replace the vegetables. So all of the additional things are just that - additional to vegetables.
  2. More fresh vegetables than eg grilled or steamed.
  3. Sliced or diced or torn or cut.
  4. Dressed - any - from just oil onwards.
RaindropsOnRosie · 31/07/2021 19:12

Chopped lettuce- Iceberg and Romaine
Spinach
Either cucumber or carrot - thinly sliced or grated
Caesar salad dressing or some herby oil/balsamic drizzle
Sliced grilled chicken

To serve, place in giant handmade bowl next to pizza, and ignore.

HeronLanyon · 31/07/2021 19:17

Yes raindrops fully agree. Had argument/discussion with do just last night about this. We had lettuce and salad stuff to use up. My argument was that if we had pizza my salad would be largely ignored and small to start with anyway. We had steamed potatoes and salad instead.

LoveFall · 31/07/2021 19:30

I love a Greek salad. Cucumber, red and green pepper (capiscum), feta, Kalamata olives, red onions, chopped parsley and mint. Dressing of olive oil, apple cider vinegar, garlic and onion powder, salt, pepper, and fresh oregano plus basil.

Served with garlicky humous and warm pita bread.

Lovely and refreshing on a hot day.

I'm not sure it qualifies as massive but it is still good.

Happy36 · 31/07/2021 19:36

In the first lockdown I ate a lot of massive salads for lunch...any combination of leaves, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, pickled shredded beetroot, quinoa, spring onions, avocado, hummus, tuna, a boiled egg, seeds, celery and / or carrot sticks. Grazed on it while listening to a podcast and staring out of the window (where l live we weren't allowed out), and feeling happy I wasn't physically at work so actually had a lunch break.
